737 Max jet safety plans were rejected

t is unclear what, if any, assessment investigators have made of the complaint. The complaint, filed after the two crashes, builds on concerns about Boeing's corporate culture, as the company tries to repair its reputation and get the planes flying again. Many current and former Boeing employees have privately discussed problems with the design and decision-making process on the 737 Max, outlining episodes when managers dismissed engineers' recommendations or prioritised profits. The engineer who filed the ethics concerns this year, Curtis Ewbank, went a step further, lodging a formal complaint and calling out the chief executive for publicly misrepresenting the safety of the plane.During the development of the 737 Max, Ewbank worked on the cockpit systems that pilots use to monitor and control the airplane. In his complaint to Boeing, he said that managers were urged to study a backup system for calculating the plane's airspeed. The system, known as synthetic airspeed, draws on several data sources to measure how fast a plane is moving.Such equipment, Ewbank said, could detect when the angle-of-attack sensors, which measure the plane's position in the sky, were malfunctioning and prevent other systems from relying on that faulty information. A version of the system is used on Boeing's 787 Dreamliner, a new model of plane.Ewbank did not respond to requests for comment. In both crashes of the Max, an angle-of-attack sensor is believed to have failed, sending bad data to automated software designed to help prevent stalls. That software, known as MCAS, then activated erroneously, sending the planes into irrecoverable nose dives.Ewbank noted in the complaint, "It is not possible to say for certain that any actual implementation of synthetic airspeed on the 737 Max would have prevented the accidents" in Ethiopia and Indonesia. But he said that Boeing's actions on the issue pointed to a culture that emphasised profit in some cases, at the expense of safety.Throughout the development of the Max, Boeing tried to avoid adding components that could force airlines to train pilots in flight simulators, costing tens of millions of dollars over the life of an aircraft. Changes to the Max could also have required the more onerous approval for a new plane, rather than the certification process for a derivative model. US Congresswoman resigns over alleged affair with staff member

The ethics committee said on Wednesday it was "aware of public allegations... (that Hill) may have engaged in a sexual relationship with an individual on her congressional staff," and said it was investigating. Hill, who is going through a divorce, apologized in her resignation letter for "mistakes made along the way" but also lamented a "smear campaign". Hill blamed her husband and said she was pursuing legal options after media outlets published intimate photos that purported to be of the lawmaker. "Having private photos of personal moments weaponised against me has been an appalling invasion of my privacy," said Hill. "It's also illegal." Hill serves on the House Armed Services and Oversight and Reform Committees, where she is also vice chair. She defeated incumbent Republican Steve Knight in a district north of Los Angeles, helping the Democrats win control of the House. Her district is seen by election analysts at the Cook Political Report as one of the most competitive in the country. Although Hill's departure could help Republicans win back her seat in November 2020, they still face an uphill climb in their effort to regain control of the House. ... Before Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, clean the mind

Mr Modi's endeavour to end open defecation has even merited international attention: the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation honoured the prime minister for this initiative during his recent visit to the United States of America. But accolades may not always be enough to remove stubborn stains. Days before India's streets and households were expected to gleam, two Dalit children were lynched in Madhya Pradesh's Shivpuri district by upper caste men for defecating in the open. The violence as well as the assumption of immunity on the part of the perpetrators reveals some of the formidable challenges that continue to undermine India's efforts to rid itself of regressive traditions. Institutional lethargy is but one obstacle. The children who were killed did not have a toilet at home. But the reason for this oversight, the father of the victims has alleged, is caste. Indeed the question of public hygiene has always been predicated on prejudice based on ascriptive identities. It is this discrimination that informs the problematic understanding of purity and pollution, which, in turn, has breathed life into such malpractices as manual scavenging. An official ban and periodic censure from the Supreme Court have not been enough to curb this malpractice or the deaths that result from it. There is also the matter of shaming individuals, especially women, to comply with the directives of authorities. Cleanliness is, evidently, a layered phenomenon in India and its absence can be attributed to the interlocking of several kinds of complicity. The political goal of declaring India 'clean' may have been achieved. But the social catalysts of aswachhta remain unaddressed. 1708670 1707553 DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Only two types of green crackers available in Delhi this Diwali

'The supply is very short and time is very short. We are trying to procure some green crackers from Sivakasi on Wednesday,' said said Narender Gupta, president, fireworks and general traders association, Sadar Bazar. The Supreme Court had banned conventional firecrackers in 2018 and had allowed only green firecrackers, which cause 30% less pollution. Delhi Police commissioner Amulya Patnaik on Tuesday held a meeting with the DCPs of all 15 districts and asked them to take steps to ensure supply of green firecrackers to all the licensed traders and encourage people to sticking to the guidelines issued regarding bursting of crackers. A total of 97 such shopkeepers had applied for temporary licence. While only 11 got it till last week, others were not granted licences because they had not got fire certificates. 'Those who did not get it, were assured that licences will be given if they get the fire certificate before Diwali. Till Tuesday evening, 42 more licences were issued as they produced the fire clearance certificate. The total number is now 53. We expect that some more temporary licences will be issued by tomorrow or day after,' said additional commissioner of police (licencing) Suvashish Choudhary. Choudhary said 143 traders in Delhi have permanent licence from PESO for storing and selling more than 600 kg of firecrackers. 'The Delhi Police's licencing department issue 14 licences for five years to those shopkeepers who store or sell less than 600 kilograms of firecrackers. Some temporary licences are also issued for a fixed period of 25 days by district DCPs,' he added. One of the DCPs who attended the meeting said that the police chief emphasized on encouraging people for using only green crackers and adhere to Supreme Court's guidelines on bursting of crackers such as its timing and community fireworks. Patnaik asked the DCPs to hold meetings with RWAs and shopkeepers having valid licences for selling firecrackers for the same. 'We have asked our staff to check illegal sale of both conventional as well as green crackers. All boxes having green crackers have a specific hologram. We have briefed our staff to find that hologram on firecracker boxes to ascertain if they are green or banned crackers,' said DCP (southwest) Devender Arya. 'One needs to detox for healthy and glowing skin': Shahnaz Husain

One should definitely start with cleansing. After cleansing, take some ice in a clean napkin and apply it on the face for a few seconds. This closes the pores and makes the skin shine. Then put cold rose water on the skin with cotton wool pads. First, use them to wipe the skin and then stroke the skin with them. On the cheeks, use outward and upward movements, ending each stroke on the temples gently. On the forehead, start from the centre and go outwards on each side, again ending on the temples. Use circular movements on the chin. Then pat the skin with the rosewater-soaked cotton wool pads. Which home-made masks would you recommend for glowing skin? 1. Take curd and honey and add two tablespoons of red wine. Leave it on the skin for 20 minutes. Rinse off with water. This softens the skin and removes the tan. 2. Mix cucumber and ripe papaya pulp with curd and two teaspoons oats. Lemon juice can also be added. Apply it on the face and neck for half an hour. It helps to remove tan and brighten the skin. 3. Mix egg white, lemon juice and honey and apply it like a mask. Wash it off after 20 minutes. Lemon and egg white have cleansing effects and reduces oiliness. Egg white tightens the skin, while honey is a powerful natural moisturiser. What make-up ideas would you suggest for the festive night? Smokey eyes are great for a gala night. Use black eyeliner to line the upper eyes and also the lower lid. Smudge the line and then apply a dark shadow on the lids. Whether it is eye shadow or foundation, remember it to blend well without any appearance of lines and blotches. Don't forget to highlight under the brows and on the cheekbones. To make lips look fuller, first apply foundation and a light touch of powder to set the foundation. Wait for a few minutes to outline the lips. Use the same colour lip pencil as the colour of your lipstick. To give the illusion of a pout, apply lipstick all over the lips, leaving out the centre. Apply a lighter coloured lip gloss on the centre. To make the make-up last, first do cold compress with rose water, then apply astringent lotion for oily skin or moisturising lotion for normal to dry skin followed by water-based foundation. Share some tips on post-festive beauty care. One needs to detox to keep the skin healthy and glowing. Include raw, natural foods and fresh fruits and vegetable juices in your diet. Not only do they detoxify the system by promoting the elimination of wastes, but also bring about a sense of well being and vitality. Lightly cooked vegetables, unprocessed cereals, sprouted grains, nuts, seeds and yoghurt should also be added to the diet. Having probiotic food also helps. One can also take up yoga. The exercises are particularly beneficial for strengthening the body, making it flexible, and youthful. India's Chandrayaan-2 takes colourful images of Moon's impact craters

NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), in its October 14 flyby over the Moon's south polar region, was unable to find any evidence of India's Chandrayaan-2's Vikram lander . 'The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter imaged the area of the targeted Chandrayaan-2 Vikram landing site on October 14 but did not observe any evidence of the lander,' Noah Edward Petro, the Project Scientist for the LRO mission, told PTI in an email. Earlier it was speculated that the Vikram lander could be hidden in the shadows in the crater filled region. Impact craters are approximately circular depressions on the surface of the moon, ranging from small bowl-shaped depressions to larger and complex multi-ringed impact basins. According to ISRO, the study of the nature, size, distribution and composition of impact craters and associated ejecta features will help reveal valuable information about the origin and evolution of craters. The images shared by Chandraayan-2 are designed to produce greater details about the morphology and ejecta materials of impact craters due to the images being of a higher resolution. More importantly the SAR on Chandraayan-2 is using the L& S band which can produce greater details about the morphology and ejecta materials of impact craters. This allows for higher resolution images. The L Band has a greater depth penetration(3-5 meters), which enables probing the buried terrain at greater depths. In a press statement, ISRO explained that the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is a more powerful remote sensing instrument for studying planetary surfaces and subsurface because the radar signal can penetrate the surface. The SAR is also sensitive to roughness, structure and composition of the surface material and the buried terrain. Byomkesh has to survive the test of time and keep returning to our pathetic lives, just to inspire us from time to time

You can change the time period depending on what the story demands, but you cannot make him an action guy. Ajit has to embody the iconic coffeehouse intellectual, a witty writer and not just a comic sidekick. Those of you who have read the story will know that this one is about spies and betrayal of a nation. About politics and selling the country. Those of you who have not read it will have to simply grin and bear it cause you have never realised what the middle-class, utterly Bengali Byomkesh is capable of. To the latter it's still just another mystery story coated in their strange sense of Bangaliana. To me the dhoti actually has nothing to do with being Bengali. The entire nation wore and still wears a dhoti. Similarly, wearing jeans has nothing to do with being modern. Similarly, to me giving Feluda or Byomkesh a cell phone is actually insulting their intellect and mental capacity to be ahead of time with their knowledge and intuition. As far as I'm concerned, the world of Byomkesh is being torn apart with corruption and greed, with suppressed sexuality and passion that is destructive. Where ideology has gone wrong and money is ruling moral values. A world filled with traitors, blackmailers, sexual scandal and even incest. Only the middle-class, balanced Byomkesh has the guts to challenge this lopsided world because you can't buy him off with money. He relishes in finding the truth irrespective of the fact that he is not paid for it. Byomkesh is a crack shot but refuses to carry a gun and knows who to depend on when the gun is pointed at him. He can talk his way out of any dangerous situation without having to actually engage in a fist fight. Byomkesh is far more modern than us in his mind. Like Professor Shonku lives a highly middle-class life in Madhupur but is perhaps one of the world's greatest scientist. The sheer contrast is the fun. Now, most of us believe we are evolved because we are watching Netflix. Yet, to most of us words like "edgy" or "gritty" are just words which we have accumulated without understanding its true meaning. Speed has actually no feature in our otherwise languid life steeped in nostalgia which is actually behind time. In such a world, Byomkesh solves an intricate, complicated case in actually two days. 48 hours. It does not seem like 48 hours 'cause he is not running or chasing cars. He is spending sleepless nights arguing with his friend Ajit, lying to his wife over the telephone, smiling at a gun pointed at his face and enjoying his "kosha mangsho". All at the same time. He is that intellectually aware and an extremely sharp Bong who refuses to pretend to be smart but is actually that when it comes to finding the truth. Yet he is polite to the one who is faking the "tough guy" out of desperation. He is equally bothered about the reputation of the country he belongs to. I feel that such a character needs to be kept alive in our diluted, half-baked modern society ruled by mediocrity and money power, just to remind us of the pride of being a true Bengali. A man who lives a humdrum life and solves national and international crimes from his Keyatola home. I feel, whether I do it or not doesn't matter. The true spirit of Byomkesh has to be kept in tact for the purpose of heritage, legacy. Byomkesh has to survive the test of time and keep returning to our pathetic lives, just to inspire us from time to time. Like the bell of a bell tower that keeps telling you what time of the day it is. It's purely for this reason that I have decided to be a part of this renewed attempt. So begins a new, refreshing journey with Satyanweshi Byomkesh, based on Magnomoinak. Whether the trio (Parambrata as Byomkesh, Rudranil Ghosh as Ajit and Neel Dutt as the music director) has come up with something totally different this time is up to you to judge, but let me share my take.As far as Parambrata is concerned, I felt it's high time we saw a younger Byomkesh. Since you don't have to be a traditional Bong to wear a dhoti, I seriously believe that Byomkesh does not have to be middle-aged to solve highly complex adult, political cases. He can appear to be the next- door young man who is a tad snappier than others yet can pull the carpet away from under any and everybody without much effort. It's a Byomkesh for the new Gen. Parambrata fits the bill and am proud of the fact that he performed effortlessly, being himself, in scenes where he rules. What happens with an effortless performance is that the subtext emerges. So Param, if I may call him that, let the subtext emerge. His personal political consciousness added to our discussions during the shoot and he, on one hand was easy with the young director, on the other finicky of the political context. That was rather refreshing for me.Next is Rudranil Ghosh. Our connection goes way back to the days of Chalo Let's Go. Rudranil, like Parambrata, has changed over the years. But what I am extremely elated about is that he still retains the old-world wit. That wit shows. He makes you giggle but not break out into a guffaw. Despite Saswata Chatterjee embedded in mind, I quite like this Ajit who balances the dramatic tension of all the brilliant performances of his co-actors with his quizzical look and mischievous smile.Neel Dutt understood the general shift of focus from the classical noir towards the retro and used the electric guitar, which gives the new score an uncanny zing. It stands out and clearly reflects that here is a fresh attempt. The choice of Sayantan Ghosal (director) and his team was entirely mine, 'cause I thought and believed that it's time a bunch of young folks should invest their time and effort in recreating the old. A young team makes mistakes but because they are young they own up and correct them. Much of the supporting cast, including Suprobhat (a stunningly brilliant actor) Swaroopa Ghosh (an old friend and actress from my theatre days), Gargee Roychowdhury, Ayoshi Talukdar, Madhurima Basak and Sumanta Mukherjee were my choice and I am extremely proud of their contribution. I myself have always surrounded my Byomkesh with extremely good actors and kept repeating them in every film. The reason being that is Byomkesh's suspects and adversaries, bad or misunderstood, have to be of very high calibre. Yet Byomkesh finally outwits them all. Here again the same game is repeated and I am certain that you will find those playing suspects are absolutely superb.Apart from the twists and turns in the narrative, the joy of watching a Byomkesh actually lies in the performance more that anything else. Here again, director Sayantan Ghosal focussed on the good actors, thereby giving them space to grow in each scene. I personally love close-ups on the big screen. It was nice to see the young team accepting this love and enjoy interesting faces. Since I grew up with Raymond Chandler, my scripts of Byomkesh had always been littered with sharp repartee. But repartee or wisecracks can only work if the actors deliver them with aplomb. Every scene between Param and Suprobhat, or between Swaroopa Ghosh and Param, or Rudranil and Suprobhat work like magic because they enjoyed the repartee. Eating potato as effective as carbohydrate gels

Potatoes are a promising alternative for athletes because they represent a cost-effective, nutrient-dense and whole-food source of carbohydrates, the researchers reported in the Journal of Applied Physiology. Furthermore, they serve as a savoury race fuel option when compared with the high sweetness of carbohydrate gels. The researchers recruited 12 participants who were healthy and devoted to their sport, averaging 165 miles per week on their bicycles. To qualify for the trials, the cyclists had to reach a specific threshold for aerobic fitness and complete the 120-minute cycling challenge followed by a time trial. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions during the experiments: They would consume either water alone, a commercially available carbohydrate gel or an equivalent amount of carbohydrates obtained from potatoes. The researchers standardised what the 12 cyclists ate for 24 hours before repeating the 120-minute cycling challenge and time trial, which was designed to mirror typical race conditions. Throughout the exercise, the team measured participants' blood glucose, core body temperature, exercise intensity, gastric emptying and gastrointestinal symptoms. The researchers also measured concentrations of lactate, a metabolic marker of intense exercise, in participants' blood. "We found no differences between the performance of cyclists who got their carbohydrates by ingesting potatoes or gels at recommended amounts of about 60 grams per hour during the experiments. "Both groups saw a significant boost in performance that those consuming only water did not achieve," Burd added. According to the study, plasma glucose concentrations went up by a similar amount in those consuming potatoes and gels. I've been super single for two years, says Selena Gomez

"You're in a phase of life where you experience love for the first time and I think that can just be a little toxic," she said. "You have this codependency that you think is love and then you have this addiction to the passion and the frustration with each other that you think, 'Oh, that's love,' or fighting or doing all this stuff, 'Oh that's love,' and I believed that for a long time. So I've been super, super single for two years and I want to know what love will look like next for me," she added. "I want it to be real and I don't want it to be codependent or messy or lack communication. I think you know when you get older, you find people that are actually right for you, that are actually on the same wavelength," the singer concluded. The singer dated Bieber on and off between 2011 and 2014, then reconciled in 2017 for several months before their final split. ... Parenting is a partnership, here's how to keep your sanity

Undoubtedly, your biggest challenge in all this is to shrug it all off and see your partner in a good light. Best thing to do? Leave out all the external factors and focus on your roles. Only you can do what you do. If it comes naturally to the mother to prioritise caring for the baby over going back to work, that's her choice and privilege. If you've decided to reverse the roles or both need to juggle work and home, that's okay too. You may or may not have made the decision to be parents after deliberation but now that the baby's here, you're both responsible towards it. The key thing is partnership. Unlike moms, new dads may not feel an instant bonding with the baby Megha Singh says, 'I think the biggest challenge after having kids is to find the inspiration to spend some meaningful time together. With time and the energy both on a low, it is the drive that is missing, not necessarily the intention to maintain a healthy relationship. I think you should carve out 15 minutes together over a cup of tea and talk about what's going on at office/home. This alone can keep you connected. Just keep the phone or newspaper away and make eye contact. We just stop doing that after kids! Remember, almost 70-80 per cent of our sensory inputs are visual. Also important is keeping your sense of humour alive. You need to be able to find something funny even in the most serious of situations. If you can still crack a joke about the in-laws and make your spouse laugh, you're doing great.' Swati and Aditya Jain, parents to a five-year-old and soon expecting another, share that they respect each other's time out with their individual friends too. He babysits and lets her have a night out with her girls once a month and she lets him go golfing with his buddies. Swati says, 'It's important for husbands to understand the postpartum phase, when hormones are creating havoc and mood swings are at an all-time high. Extending support at this time is crucial. It's when your relationship as parents grows.' No two sets of parents are alike so you have to find your own rhythm and what works for you. Having said that, there are some universals: Couple time changes to family time. How do you deal with that? It may seem like a lot of effort but ask for help from extended family and friends, or find a trusted babysitter. Even a monthly date is a good commitment. What you choose to do in that time should be purely fun, not chores. Dressing up and going out can be a much needed change of scene for the stay-at-home parent. If you can, take a mini vacation or staycation for a change of routine every six months. Don't try to read each other's mind. Discuss everything you ought to. Talk about finances, your sex life, division of labour, emotions and everything under the sun. Keep communication open. It's the only way you won't build resentment. Now that you're both pressed for time, understanding each other's needs and giving each other some space may be a good thing. Not too much, not too little, just enough to keep the balance. Nobody wants to be in mom-mode or dad-mode all the time. Maintaining your individuality is also important. You may be short on patience because everything feels daunting. Remember, you are partners in this and learn to appreciate what the other does. In fact, keep your expectations low and let them do it their way so they're not discouraged from taking on a responsibility. Also, don't hesitate to swallow your pride and apologise after a spat. Winning an argument won't necessarily bring you peace of mind. Don't stop being nice to each other. You'll have mood swings but shouldn't offload everything on your partner. Talk to friends in your close-knit circle or other parents who'll likely sympathise with your frustration. That way, you'll get an objective opinion instead of second-guessing yourself. Take long walks, start a journal, meditate. Different things work for different people. Do your best but remember, nobody's a perfect parent. You'll mess up sometimes and it's okay. Don't beat yourself over small things. If the baby's healthy and happy, you're both doing a great job! Distress signal: Share of youngest workers in NREG begins to rise

In a growing economy and a young nation, subsistence-level job guarantee should be their last resort. That's why the upward trend should raise concern. In 2013-14, the ratio of young workers among total MGNREGA workers was 13.64 per cent which came down to 7.73 percent in 2017-18 before rising to 9.1 percent in 2018-19 and 10.06 percent in 2019-20. 'There is a slowdown in the economy. The situation is bleak for young people. They have to sustain their education and find livelihood. When they are unable to find job, they turn to MGNREGA. MGNREGA is stop-gap arrangement for them,'' said Nikhil Dey, founding member of Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan, an NGO closely working on MGNREGA. Government took a decision to demonetise high value currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 in November 2016 while GST was implemented from July 1, 2017. Both these decision caused disruptions in the economy, which many experts feel contributed to the slowdown. The GDP growth which peaked to 8.2 percent in 2016-17 also came down in subsequent years. The economy grew by 6.8 percent in 2018-19. Data shows the total number of individuals who worked under MGNREGA has also gone up in recent years. For instance, in 2013-14, of 7.95 crore worked under MGNREGA and this number came down to 6.71 crore in 2014-15 but started rising again and reached 7.21 crore in 2015-16, 7.65 crore in 2016-17 and 7.76 crore in 2018-19. In mission mode, villagers start cleaning Sultanpur Lodhi inch by inch During the current financial year, the total number of persons working under MGNREGA has already reached 5.72 crore up to October 21, 2019. 30 tonnes of gold sold on Dhanteras this year, says jewellers association

'The gold prices in the domestic bullion market are high due to the soaring prices of gold in the international market and increase in import duty on expensive metals in India. Therefore, the demand for gold was expected to be less when the festive season started, but due to the improved buying trends in the last three-four days, gold sales were recorded to be 30 tonnes on Dhanteras,' Mehta told IANS. While talking to IANS on October 8, Mehta had said that due to weak demand, they expected that only 20 tonnes of gold will be sold in the domestic bullion market on Dhanteras this year. Ajay Kedia, Director, Kedia Advisory, said that gold purchase was low by 25 per cent as compared to last year. The gold prices on Friday closed at Rs 38,275 per 10 gm whereas last year the metal price was Rs 31,702 per 10 gm. The government has increased the import duty on expensive metals to 12.5 per cent from 10 per cent so as to reduce the import of gold due to which the precious metal became expensive in the country. Ian Chappell rings heat alarm for Test cricket

For starters, drastic increases in temperature will add to the health dangers for players. There's nothing more frustrating than a game delayed by rain, but imagine if players are off the field because the sun burns too brightly."The former captain, who has battled skin cancer, said exposure to sun for too long could make players susceptible to the ailment he has been fighting. "That is the reality if temperatures keep rising; players will need to be protected from heat stroke or more lasting skin-cancer damage. It's no wonder day-night matches are considered critical to Test cricket's future," he wrote. Concerned about the rising sea levels, Chappell said: "Then there is the concern of rising sea levels and more ferocious weather events like devastating tornadoes and cyclones. There's also the damaging effect of reduced rainfall, which has already seen one Test-match city - Cape Town - come perilously close to running out of water in recent years. "These are firm reminders that cricketers and administrators need to take climate change seriously," he added. The 76-year-old also pointed out the varied effects of T20 cricket on the five-day format. "There's no doubt that the explosive nature of T20s has already had a profound effect on Test-match batting."The prevailing mindset in tricky Test match conditions is for batsmen to adopt the attitude 'I'll get them before they get me'," he wrote. Wounds movie review: Armie Hammer stars in hollow Halloween horror on Netflix

the Wounds trailer here Armie Hammer plays a regular Joe who tends the bar at a New Orleans establishment, frequented by what seems like the entire neighbourhood. On any given night, cops can be seen fraternizing with the local goons, raggedy bikers sit across from local musicians, and terrified teenagers tentatively sip on their first beers as regulars demands their regular poison. But regardless of how crowded it gets, Will — that's Hammer's character — makes sure to reserve a seat right next to the bar for the girl he has a crush on. The trouble is, neither Will nor Alicia (Zazie Beetz) is single. Not only does Wounds offer a fascinatingly dull depiction of a disintegrating relationship — Dakota Johnson, as Will's girlfriend, is nearly as useless as the computer screen she perpetually stares at — it is not at all the grave, Heart of Darkness quoting existentialist thriller that it thinks it is. Haunted mobile phone movie? That's more like it. Dakota Johnson in a still from Netflix's Wounds. The phone didn't have to be haunted, by the way. I was perfectly on board till around when Will found it in the aftermath of a bar fight, and after cracking the passcode discovered some truly gruesome pictures of a murdered corpse on it. But things began going downhill the moment Will decided (for reasons best known to himself) to not hand over the damned device to the police, and instead take it home, thereby allowing it to unleash its demonic powers on him. This is, as you'd agree, quite ridiculous. Phones can't haunt people! Unless, of course, they know that they are being used as metaphorical devices to highlight humanity's ever-growing dependence on technology, which makes the premise of the film sound like something a peeved off parent would come up with to get their teenage child to play outdoors more often. Phones can, however, very realistically contain pictures of dead bodies, and god knows what other obscenities. And they're nearly as likely, in fact, to be forgotten at a bar for strangers to find. That's an interesting idea. Armie Hammer in a still from Wounds. But alas, Wounds would much rather focus on strange demonic rituals, gory imagery, and empty jump scares. Which is to say, it's like any other run-of-the-mill scary movie. And poor Armie Hammer has been stranded yet again, the square peg in a round hole that he is, in a film that just won't have him. Despite numerous attempts, Hollywood still hasn't found an ideal slot for him, and regrettably, neither is he chameleonic enough to adapt to different kinds of films. He is, however, as reliably strong in Wounds as he was in, say, his tentpoles or his quirky romances. This is the first time things haven't gone the way they were supposed to for Will, and his sheer cluelessness at how to handle the situation brings to mind the self-satisfied confidence of the 'Winklevii' from The Social Network. Spare a thought for Zazie Beetz, though. This is the second film in a matter of weeks in which she is reduced to being the object of a messed-up man's desires, and little else. In both Joker and Wounds, straight white men attempt to forcibly kiss her character, who gives in — at least superficially. But this would be reading too much into a film that is, let it not be forgotten, a haunted mobile phone movie. The hunt for the perfect Halloween film continues. Priyanka Gandhi brainstorms with UP Congress team in Rae Bareli

After arriving at Chaudhary Charan Singh airport here this morning, Priyanka stopped for a while at Bachhrawan for 'darshan' at Hanuman temple and proceeded to Rae Bareli, the Lok Sabha seat of her mother Congress president Sonia Gandhi. 'Priyanka too is one of the trainers. She has a session for the new Uttar Pradesh Congress team that has been appointed to accomplish the party's Mission UP 2022,' said a senior party leader. While UPCC president Ajay Kumar Lallu was not available for comments, all the leaders attending appeared enthusiastic about the training programme. 'It will give us an opportunity to not only know about party's policies but also about what the leadership expects from us,' said a senior party leader, adding, 'Sachin Rao, who is organising the training session, has kept the details a closely guarded secret.' Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday targeted the Yogi Adityanath government for rising crime saying instead of making excuses it should act against the criminals. 'Government has all the powers. It should stop making excuses and begin to act now,' said Priyanka on way to Rae Bareli when asked to comment on prevailing law and order situation in the state. 'Murders are taking place in broad daylight. Crime is being perpetrated against women. New statistics of crime have come out. UP occupies top position in crime against women. Government should take it seriously and check crime against women,' said Priyanka in a reference to the National Crime Record Bureau's statistics for 2017.

The singer dated Bieber on and off between 2011 and 2014, then reconciled in 2017 for several months before their final split. ... Haryana's lessons can help the Congress in Delhi

In both states, the BJP reaffirmed its dominance in May this year, winning 12 of the 14 Jharkhand seats while making a clean sweep of Delhi's seven. In Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)'s proposed alliance with the Congress did not fructify, thanks to the latter's diffident central leadership and a faction-driven state unit. Doubts persist whether the rapprochement that had then eluded them could happen before the 2020 assembly polls? High now on its salutary Haryana show, the Congress is capable of assuming superiority to cite its 2019 Lok Sabha vote percentage of 22.5%, up from 15.10% of the previous polls, compared to the AAP's 18.1%, down from the 2014 high of 32.9%. But the non-BJP parties in the capital should be guided by the BJP's 56.58% parliamentary vote in Delhi. A tactical understanding short of a formal alliance could benefit both. The Congress must acknowledge that in the assembly polls, Arvind Kejriwal's challenge to the Narendra Modi-Amit Shah duo would be more credible. It might reverse in AAP's favour the divided non-BJP vote of which the Congress got a bigger share in the parliamentary election because of its relatively higher viability as a national alternative. Unlike the Congress that struggled to mount an acceptable counter-narrative, Kejriwal was both glib and nimble-footed enough to not get trapped in the BJP's medley range of rhetoric. Learning from his widely-misconstrued formulation on India's Balakot airstrike — in which he advised Modi to counter, with proof, the Pakistani propaganda — Kejriwal supported the abrogation of Article 370 and kept his counsel on the contentious National Register of Citizens (NRC). Given his demand for full statehood for Delhi, Kejriwal's endorsement of Jammu and Kashmir's bifurcation into two Union Territories appears a glaring contradiction. But it is proof of his ability to not lose sight of the big picture which unites people in a partisan polity. On the face of it, the BJP's nationalist plank hasn't delivered robust results in Haryana and Maharashtra where the verdict is reminiscent of the 2017 Gujarat polls. It is a kind of scenario where the runner-up looks the winner and the winner gets to rule on a tenuous majority. But the nationalist plank getting a fresh boost is within the pale of possibility. A judicial go-ahead for the temple in Ayodhya would lend the Modi-Shah chariot some extra horse-power in Delhi and Jharkhand. But the mighty BJP twosome and the Congress, if it insists on being the third corner in a triangular fight, will be handicapped without a chief ministerial face to match that of Kejriwal. The BJP's Manoj Tiwari and the Congress's Subhash Chopra are but junior league for someone who took up cudgels against the Prime Minister. That apart, the AAP's organisational machine is formidable, despite the brain-drain it has had. Among the poor and the lower middle classes, it is rated high for its work in the health and education sectors, besides providing water and electricity on rationalised-subsidised tariffs. It has, in sum, an impressive record for a renewed mandate. In comparison, there is little to write home about, when it comes to the municipal corporations run by the BJP. That is not to suggest that the BJP, which is high on resources, power and individual charisma, in addition to its ability to mould and control the political narrative, will let the AAP have it easy or have it all. Haryana might come across as an exception. In reality, the fall in the BJP's tally obfuscates its sizeably higher vote-share than the Congress. The contradiction can be explained perhaps by the Hindutva libretto the BJP scripted and strengthened in every election. That's at the root of the rising majoritarian nationalism feeding on the party's concept of correcting historic wrongs. Several of its poll planks and political initiatives fall in that category — the temple at Ayodhya, nullification of Article 370, detection of illegal migrants from Bangladesh, citizenship for persecuted minorites in the region (minus the Muslims), and the inexorable march to a uniform civil code. In fact, the BJP's promise to place VD Savarkar in the annals of the Bharat Ratnas is in consonance with Amit Shah's advocacy of 'writing history with an Indian perspective'. Savarkar's rehabilitation started under Atal Bihari Vajpayee's National Democratic Alliance government. His portrait was unveiled in Parliament's central hall a year before the 2004 polls when the BJP-led combine lost to the United Progressive Alliance. Whether that was a different India will be known in Delhi, where the electorate has an option other than the BJP. Bollywood has taught me to fight for myself: Neil Nitin Mukesh

The whole idea is to not lay down, you've to get up. You've to keep coming up. The industry has taught me to fight for yourself big time. You have got to prove, not in a bad way, but an empowering way,' Neil told PTI in an interview. The actor says in these 12 years of his career, he feels fortunate to have worked with filmmakers like Sriram, Vishal Bhardwaj, Kabir Khan and Bejoy Nambiar from whom he has learnt a lot about filmmaking. 'The journey has been extremely educational. I never had formal training in acting before I became an actor… Everyday has been an evolution for me, learning from so many fine filmmakers of the country. Even done films in different languages and all kinds of movies 'It has never been a number game for me that 'I have worked on five films this year and have more twenty coming up.' For me it's the kind of people I work with and learn from. I never understood the math behind the box office.' The 37-year-old actor says he realised pretty early in his career, working with diverse filmmakers across languages, that cinema is not going to be stagnant at any given time. 'It surprises you every time you feel you're in the best phase. But then there's a new spin. That changed my perspective a lot,' he said. Which ultimately led to Neil turning writer and producer with Bypass Road. The home-invasion thriller drama is directed by his brother, Naman Nitin Mukesh. Neil says he had as many as 12 film ideas but he gravitated towards Bypass Road as he felt this was the perfect time for its release, thanks to the digital platforms which have changed the game. 'I knew that somewhere the digital platforms are going to take over, about three and a half years ago. I had finished writing the first draft and I was also working on 12 other ideas. I went back and chose this one because I thought if OTT comes and it's booming by the time I would make it, then it would've become obsolete. I would've been too late to make the film.' Bypass Road, featuring Neil, Adah Sharma, Shama Sikander, Rajit Kapoor among others, is scheduled to release on November 8. Ghaziabad tops country's pollution list, conditions to persist till Diwali

'Earlier the pollutants were dispersed with strong north westerly winds blowing at a speed of 20-25kmph. Now the slow easterly winds have started arriving, and have a speed of only 6-7kmph. The pollutants trapped due to stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana besides local pollutants are not getting dispersed anymore and have got trapped in the region,' Kuldeep Srivastava, head of Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, New Delhi, said. 'Due to the slow speed of the easterly winds, the dispersal of trapped pollutants will be less. Hence, the conditions with AQI winds will prevail for the next 2-3 days,' he added. According to the forecast by System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting, Safar and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune the monitoring station at Vasundhara is likely to record AQI at 350, 382 and 414 on October 25, 26 and 27, respectively. The officials of the UP pollution control board (UPPCB) said the primary pollutant at all the four monitoring stations in Ghaziabad on Thursday was PM 2.5. 'It is a result of stubble burning and local vehicular traffic emissions. It is also added in the air by construction activities and road dust which also add PM10. The high pollution levels are a result of a change in meteorological conditions as well as local conditions in the city. However, we will continue with enforcement and measures under the graded response action plan(Grap0,' Utsav Sharma, the regional officer of the UPPCB (Ghaziabad), said. Iqbal Mirchi case: ED gets custody of Deshpande till tomorrow

Bindra, during interrogation, told the ED that cheques were issued by Sunblink in favour of 'dummy' tenants of the three properties and handed over to him, which he gave to Deshpande. It has been claimed that this was done at the behest of Humayun Merchant, an alleged close aide of Mirchi, who is the third accused to be arrested in the case. Deshpande has admitted that she had received the money from Bindra, who, however, claimed that it was a loan that he had taken from her, which he was returning. In its remand plea, the ED also claimed that Deshpande played a 'crucial role' in the alleged illegal dealings and was in contact with Mirchi and his relatives. The ED alleged that Deshpande also appears to have helped in opening bank accounts with false documents to help Mirchi and his aides in the illegal dealings. 'The accused person appears to have assisted Iqbal Mirchi in acquisition, possession and laundering of proceeds of crime,' ED's counsel Hiten Venegaonkar said, while seeking custody of Deshpande. Special Judge P P Rajvaidya granted the ED custody of Deshpande till October 25. So far, Deshpande, Bindra, Merchant and Haroun Yusuf have been arrested by the ED. Bindra filed for bail on Wednesday. The ED has been directed to file a reply on Thursday. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. On top of the world

It's a continuous, non-stop test of physical and mental endurance. When asked about how he ended up participating in this mega event, he said, 'I've been involved in sports throughout my life. I was a national level roller skater and played tennis, state-level cricket, and martial arts but lost touch after a few years. I was always aqua phobic and couldn't bring myself to learn swimming, but one day I decided to get over it and signed up for scuba diving classes, travelled to Costa Rica and got certified in open water scuba diving. I was still very scared of the ocean, as I had never been in the ocean. But I still couldn't swim. That's when I decided to do triathlons. I came across an Ironman race on TV years ago and dreamed of doing it one day. After becoming a certified scuba diver; I decided to conquer my fear. Initially, I couldn't do even one lap without panicking. I went to a coach for a few days, but still something wasn't right. I did a small triathlon in Miami and I was the last one to finish. After that my competitive nature took over and I started spending most of my time swimming and eventually I got real comfortable in it. Now, I even coach a few people.' When asked about his motivation behind achieving this big feat, he said, 'I wanted to stick to a plan and be disciplined so I am mostly self-motivated. But I had a lot of support from my parents, wife, sister, coach and my teammates and friends. You can't do a race like this without support, so it's because of them.' He underwent hard-core training for the past two years for the event. So far, he has swum around 113km in the pool and ocean, biked around 4000km and run around 650km for training i.e. around 15-20hours per week, six days a week. Physical therapy, acupuncture, massages and Cryotherapy were incorporated for recovery and injury prevention. The widow claimed that her husband killed himself because of the 28-year-old woman. The victim was beaten up and stripped. Police, however, managed to rescue her,' a police officer said. The victim, who is also married and has two sons, was taken to the police station concerned. As per police, she had allegedly run away from home in 2011 but returned after some time. This made villagers suspect her of having illicit relationships. Police said that cross-complaints have been filed. Congress threatens Statewide agitation

The Congress team also demanded that provision should be made for upbringing of the seven-year-old daughter of the deceased. The Congress team claimed that the Commission directed the Collector and Jajpur SP to provide adequate security to the family members of the deceased and witnesses in the case. Moquim said the Commission also directed the district administration to provide `5000 per month for the upbringing of the minor daughter of Smitarani. Later at a press conference, the team members questioned under what circumstances the VLW was forced to commit suicide and why the guest house of a private cement company was allowed to be used by the husband of the sarpanch of the panchayat who is one of the suspects. However, the ruling BJD said the opposition political parties should refrain from politicising the incident when the police are investigating into the matter to find out the reason behind the murder of the VLW. BJD Rajya Sabha member and spokesperson Sasmit Patra said the State Government has taken the incident seriously and action will be taken against those involved as per law.Rejecting the opposition demand for a CBI probe into the incident, Patra sought the cooperation of the opposition political parties in investigation into the murder case. Dimbeswar Baruah's plea to honour educationists

fter a meaningful career in schools spread across several districts, Baruah joined the Sivasagar Govt Multipurpose HS School as principal in 1983, from where he retired in 1989. A dedicated teacher and administrator, it was during his tenure as principal that the school produced many HS toppers in the science and arts streams. His contribution to society did not end with retirement. This is a brilliant initiative by The Telegraph to honour both students and teachers on the same platform. I was especially moved by the courage awards to differently-abled children".Lifetime achievement awards were also presented to eminent educationists Anil Kumar Som and Nitya Sarma.Som transformed Kamakhya Vidyalaya, one of the most sought-after government schools in the city, by his vision and dedication. He amassed these many runs in 10 balls striking at 310. Earlier in the day, Rohit Sharma surpassed former Australia cricketer Don Bradman's record of highest average in Test cricket on home soil. The right-handed batsman broke the 71-year-old record previously held by Bradman. The legendary cricketer had an average of 98.22 at home soil in Test Cricket. US cleared to slap $7.5 billion in tariffs on EU over Airbus case

tock markets around the world, which were already down on concerns for the world economy, added to their losses on the news. The US had prepared for Wednesday's ruling and already drawn up lists of the dozens of goods it would put tariffs on. They include EU cheeses, olives, and whiskey, as well as planes, helicopters and aircraft parts in the case _ though the decision is likely to require fine-tuning of that list if the Trump administration agrees to go for the tariffs. The tariffs can take effect no earlier than mid-October because a key WTO panel needs to formally sign off on them first. But they will likely have an impact on agricultural and other sectors of the European economy, at a time when other tariff battles have dented global trade growth.Wednesday's award follows a WTO ruling in May 2018 that the EU had illegally helped Airbus with subsidies. However, it does not end the long-running trans-Atlantic dispute over aircraft: WTO arbitrators are expected to rule next year about how much the EU can impose in tariffs following a separate decision that went against Boeing. The EU's top trade official said the bloc would prefer to reach a settlement with the United States to avoid a tariff war _ but it will respond if US President Donald Trump imposes new duties on EU products.EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said a tariff war "would only inflict damage on businesses and citizens on both sides of the Atlantic, and harm global trade and the broader aviation industry at a sensitive time.""If the US decides to impose WTO authorized countermeasures, it will be pushing the EU into a situation where we will have no other option than to do the same," she said.Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, who was meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Rome on Wednesday, vowed to "defend our businesses." Italian wine and cheeses could face an impact from US tariffs. The award is the largest among about two dozen at the WTO since it was created nearly 25 years ago.Unlike Trump's unilateral tariffs on billions of dollars-worth of steel, aluminum and other goods from China, the EU and elsewhere, the retaliatory tariffs authorized in the Airbus case have the stamp of approval from the WTO, an organization that he has repeatedly criticized.German Chancellor Angela Merkel acknowledged "we have lost a matter under WTO law.""This means it's not some sort of arbitrary question but a verdict according to international law that now weighs on Airbus, one must sadly say," she told reporters in Berlin. "We have to see how the Americans will react now."The WTO in May 2018 found that EU "launch aid" for Airbus had resulted in lost sales for Boeing in the twin-aisle and very-large-aircraft markets. The ruling centered on Airbus' 350XWB _ a rival of Boeing's 787 _ and the double-decker A380, which tops the Boeing 747 as the world's largest commercial passenger plane. The case itself dates to 2004, a testament to the plodding and thorough rhythm of the Geneva-based trade body.Rod Hunter, a partner at the law firm Baker McKenzie and a former White House economic official, saw three possible outcomes: The EU can end the offending subsidies to Airbus, decide to absorb the tariffs or try to reach a negotiated settlement with the Trump administration.Given Trump's enthusiasm for tariffs, Hunter said, it's unclear what the president and his trade negotiator, Robert Lighthizer, really want: "Does he want to set up a negotiation to get a resolution or is it just tariffs for tariffs' sake?''The $7.5 billion represents a fraction of EU exports to the United States, which last year came to $688 billion. But the specter of more tariffs comes at a sensitive time. Trump's aggressive use of tariffs _ especially against China _ has shaken financial markets, hobbled global trade and hurt manufacturers paralyzed with uncertainty about where to buy supplies, locate factories and sell their products. On Tuesday, a private index of US manufacturing output dropped to the lowest level since the recession year 2009."The market effect could be larger than just the impact on the European exports and their US customers,'' Hunter said.Gary Hufbauer, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and a former US trade official, cast doubt on prospects for a EU-US trade deal that will ease tensions and ward off tit-for-tat tariffs, at least before the 2020 US presidential election. "Election years are bad for trade deals,'' Hufbauer said. The WTO is already examining a dozen cases involving US tariffs and countermeasures brought by its trading partners over the administration's steel and aluminum tariffs. Trump has insisted the move is needed to protect US national security interests, but the Europeans claim it is simply protectionism and breaks global trade rules. The EU has introduced "rebalancing" tariffs on about 2.8 billion euros ($3 billion) of US steel, agricultural and other products. Trump has also threatened to slap duties on European automakers. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. French, friendship and future of art

The protagonists, two clowns, are given an ultimatum by their king. He tells them that if they want the arts to not be banished from the kingdom, they have to stage a performance that will make him both laugh and cry. How the clowns manage to do this forms the narrative," says the director, who has staged several plays at AFM and AF Puducherry with his group, Theatre Arlequin. His passion for the French language and French theatre made him pursue a Master's degree in French at the University of Madras where Amerandra landed a chance to play Creon in Jean Anouilh's play Antigone. "After a hiatus, I am back with this play at AFM. It feels like I am back home," says the artiste, whose penchant for acting also got him a scholarship to train at L'École Supérieure d'Art Dramatique de Strasbourg, France in 1989. A few months back, before rehearsals were rolled out, a theatre workshop was conducted to train the artistes. The play will feature actors who are current and former students of AFM. "I have an enthusiastic group of Francophiles who have been devoting themselves and their time to this production. Some are just beginners and for them, this is a big yet exciting challenge," he shares. This will be a one-of-a-kind production where the students of the institution will attempt a play in French. "It's a work in progress and has a tint of innocence. The production is more like friends performing for friends," he explains. The 90-minute show will feature French music, Indian songs and pieces from other Western genres, and will be laced with whimsical elements in its creative process. "The costumes have also been designed keeping in mind the fantasy and playful quality of the story. We will be directing and staging the play in two parts. The second part will be staged in a couple of months, " he says.(The first part will be staged today, 6 pm, Alliance Française of Madras. Entry is free. Survey claims Indian youth prefer job stability over salary

'When we speak of the aspirations of Indian youth, it is important to look beyond the mega cities, teeming with MNCs and startups. The majority of Indians live in small towns and villages, where public sector jobs are most sought after,' said Abhishek Patil, CEO and Co-founder, Oliveboard. 'Our survey sheds light on the dreams and motivations of this oft-ignored section of society,' Patil said. According to the survey, 23 per cent of the respondents opted for a mock test in Hindi instead of English. In terms of preferred mode for exam preparation, 58.7 per cent voted for online mock tests, while YouTube classes and videos (44.5 per cent) came second, and traditional coaching institutes (8.4per cent) were the last choice. A majority of the candidates (39.4 per cent) prepare for three or more competitive exams at the same time, the study said. The survey also found that access to online coaching for competitive exams, such as JEE, NEET, Banking, SSC and GATE, has gained greater momentum. Online learning and personalised education tools are replacing traditional coaching methods. Social media is definitely a game-changer, offering easy access to discussion forums and study groups. According to the data, Telegram groups (31.5 per cent), WhatsApp groups (31.5 per cent) and Oliveboard discussion forum (27.1 per cent) are the most popular platforms to interact with peers and educators. No BJP tea tribe candidate for the four Assembly constituencies

Shamsul Hoque is the Congress's Jania candidate. In previous Lok Sabha elections, all three BJP candidates from the tea garden community had won. "A majority of the tea garden people voted for the BJP in the past elections. However, they did not choose a single candidate from the community. The BJP does not want the tea garden community to be politically strong," said former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi.Asked if the Congress would ally with the All India United Democratic Front, Gogoi said there is no point talking about an alliance for the bypoll as both the parties have announced their candidates. "However, we may talk about the 2021 Assembly elections," said Gogoi. There have been reports that both the parties are looking for "an understanding to fight elections to defeat the BJP". Gogoi has said the Congress is "open to alliance with any party to defeat the BJP".The Congress on Monday released the list of 40 star campaigners. The list includes the party's Assam in-charge Harish Rawat, APCC president Ripun Bora, leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia and Gogoi. TV actress Sanjeeda teams up with singer-composer for music video in Istanbul

I was very happy that he approached me. He told me he would feature in it too. And then when he said we are shooting this video in Istanbul, I was like, 'Dude there's no looking back now."Have you acted in a music video before?I have but not on this scale. They were all shot here or in Goa..How was it shooting in Turkey? It was my first time in Istanbul and we tried to explore the best locations. If you're going out of the country, the director keeps in mind that you need to explore the best locations apart from the actors looking good. The whole packaging and styling of Jigar and me is so cool and stylish. Plus the Istanbul factor has added everything to the song. It was beautiful. First, we didn't have to worry about the heat, so we were not sweating (laughs). It was cold and chilly and amazing for the song's mood. We shot for two days. What's the best part about this song according to you?I think what really works well in the video is the fact that Jigar and I are ourselves in the video. Music videos are hardly two to three minutes' duration and in that time you have to tell a whole story. So, it has to be very sweet and simple and we kept it like that - a girl and a boy meet, break up and meet again. What's been the response you've been getting?I was shooting in London for my film and I didn't even get the chance to send the video to everyone. But all my actor friends are messaging me after seeing it on social media or on my Instagram. It's a great deal for them to call or message me that they are listening to it on loop! It's organically happening, I'm not having to ask someone to watch it.What are you working on next?I'm shooting for my first Bollywood film with Bejoy Nambiar called Taish. I'm opposite Harshvardhan Rane and it also stars Pulkit Samrat, Jim Sarbh and Kriti Kharbanda. I can't talk more about the character but I can promise that I won't disappoint my audience. To fix slowdown, first identify the ailment

So far in 2019, RBI has reduced the repo rate by 135 basis points. Though banks have not matched this, the pace of cuts has picked up in the last few months. But this does not seem to have helped much as reflected by the SIDBI-CIBIL numbers. The moderation in lending seems to reflect not only a hesitation to supply credit by bankers, who are already caught up in a storm over poor lending decisions from the past, but also significant weakness in demand. No firm invests in future production if buyers are absent from the market. A recent NSSO survey showed that compared to 2014-15, demand slowed down in 2017-18. The survey, not yet officially released, showed average consumption expenditure fell from `1,587 per person per month in 2014-15 to `1,524 in 2017-18 in rural areas, and from `2,926 to `2,909 in the same period in urban areas. Many economists have noted that the demand crisis does not stem merely from shadow lenders going bust, but from deep-rooted reasons-including jobs lost due to demonetisation and the global slowdown. At the same time India's obsession with keeping farm prices down to woo the urban populace has led to the larger crisis of huge losses run up by farmers. A remedy can be planned only when there is a proper diagnosis, something that former PM Manmohan Singh too pointed out recently. It was Dr Subramanian Swamy who filed cases against Jayalalithaa: DMK

Underscoring that the DMK had not initiated any corruption case against Ms Jayalalithaa for her alleged acts of omission and commission during her first Chief Ministerial tenure 1991-1996, Mr. Stalin said on the contrary it was the AIADMK's Chief Minister, Mr. O. Paneerselvam, after resigning his post in the wake of the internal party tussle after Ms Jayalalithaa's death, who had first raised the issue of a 'mystery' surrounding the death of the former Chief Minister. Mr. Stalin denied Mr. Palaniswami's charge that the DMK had stalled the holding of Local Bodies elections in Tamil Nadu. 'We moved the court only to do de-limitation of wards and reservation of wards properly and urged that the polls be held after the rectifications; but even after the court had directed the government to hold the polls and announce a timeline for the elections, the ruling AIADMK had not done so, but was now blaming the DMK for it,' said Stalin. Reiterating his charge that the AIADMK was rolling out the red carpet for all the programmes of the BJP at the Centre, Mr. Stalin questioned his stability claims about the present AIADMK government. Only after the Supreme Court verdict on the 11 MLAs' disqualification case (Mr. OPS and ten others) came, the fate of the Palaniswami government will be known, Mr. Stalin said, adding, the party was hopeful of winning both the by-polls plus the Radhapuram seat under HC scanner. ... Decoding the world of 'Bard of Blood'

Was there a need to change things as much? Ribhu Dasgupta: There's so much material in the book and we have been true to the core of it. We've added and subtracted some things, but that's only been done to add to the narrative and the screenplay. Bilal Siddiqi: I knew that with Mayank Tewari heading the writing process, my book was in safe hands. I was very open to starting on a clean slate as long as some things that were immovable in the book were there in the show as well. And then you have the other side of the story - like Jannat, which is Kirti's (Kulhari) character, who really elevates the show and she's not present in the book.Ribhu: We were all doing a series for the first time - Emraan (who plays secret agent Kabir Anand), me, Red Chillies (Entertainment) - and we had to put our best foot forward. At the end of the day, we had to do what was best for the show. The book is very visual and that helped me in filming it. Writing in a series is key. Everything else starts after that. It was important for us to have Bilal on board to ensure we didn't deviate too much from the book.Bilal: The best thing about the digital platform is that it's content-driven and not star-centric. Yes, we've got a big star in Emraan, but the writing was done way before the star came into the picture. And when he came in, he only enhanced that. That might not be the case with a Bollywood film. Ribhu has a great visual sense that's elevated the show to another level. The way we have structured the show is very binge-worthy. every episode ends in a cliffhanger, and that makes you click to the next without much thought. It's not too heavy on the political side of things. It's fiction. it's about the characters' journeys. It's not a docudrama that requires 100 per cent of your concentration or even intelligence. You can watch it in a freer state of mind and space. We've constructed it like that, and that's how the book was also written. it's a lot in the pulp, fun zone. In the book, Kabir Anand was far more heroic than he is in the series. That makes him more human and relatable. I think we've cracked the right tone. we may not be heavy viewing, but we aren't a flippant watch either. And I think that's the right tone for an espionage show. What made you zero in on Emraan Hashmi to play the lead?Bilal: It was never a given he would be the lead. He did launch the book in 2015 when we had no idea it would be made into a series. In 2016, I co-wrote his book (The Kiss of Life, chronicling Emraan's son Ayaan's fight against cancer) with him. From an acquaintance, he's now family to me. We chat about the most banal things. he's like a brother. My natural preference was always Emraan because I knew he would only enhance the show. Ribhu and Gaurav (Verma of Red Chillies Entertainment) were on board with the idea. He's a bonafide Bolly star who is doing films actively and for him to take out time for the show would need him to be sold completely on the creative aspect of the show. It had to satisfy him as an actor. So it was as simple as, 'Listen Emi, three episodes are written. Read it and let me know if you want to do it. Even if you don't it's fine' (smiles). Ribhu: In our first interaction itself, I told Emraan that this series will not cater to the theatrical audience that he has. We wanted to make it the 'non-Emraan' way. What is the 'non-Emraan' way?Ribhu: Let me give you an example. When I worked with Mr (Amitabh) Bachchan (in the TV series Yudh and the film TE3N), I told him, 'Sir, I don't need Mr Bachchan!' It was a very tough thing to tell the biggest superstar in the country that I didn't want the persona that makes him the superstar that he is. The idea was to extract the actor and leave out the superstar. That's exactly what I wanted with Emraan in Bard of Blood. I wanted the actor and the character he's playing to shine through. Bilal: But we didn't want to really disconnect from the fact that he's Emraan. It's just that we didn't focus on the 'serial kisser' aspect and stuff like that (smiles). He is a great actor. Once we had him on board, we revisited the script. There's a certain vulnerability about him as an actor. he's not the conventional action hero.. Ribhu: Which is what actually helped the character. When the show starts, Emraan's agent is a teacher. he's a little out of shape. Bilal: When you play to a stereotype, then you have an agent who walks into an alley peppered with 10 bad guys and still comes out alive. In this case, he does come out alive but because someone else would have probably helped him. Ribhu: You shouldn't expect him to win. The grind that he's made to go through to win is what contributes to the show. And to top it, Emraan is a great guy. We were shooting in Ladakh in sub-zero temperatures where there is thin air and even locals come down to the plains below, and every time I was standing at a location like that which demanded so much out of me as a director and Emraan as an actor, I would invariably turn back and find him standing behind me. Such was the support from him. Did you have to tweak anything of the politics in the book to make it more 'acceptable' for a series?Bilal: When we were in the writers' room, we didn't think of the world outside. we were only immersed in the world of the story. Telling the story as dramatically engaging as we could was the primary focus. What was happening in the real world didn't really matter to us as much as it would have if our show was taking on the tonality of non-fiction or docudrama. We are in an out-and-out action-adventure kind of zone. We didn't require reality spilling into our characters' journeys. What matters to the character at that point of time is what drove our research. We worked backwards in terms of knowing what we needed to read up on and fictionalise it to tell our story. Politically, who knew what has happened will happen? (Smiles)Ribhu: We are here to tell a story. The first thing was to make it simple so that it caters to a larger audience. It's a simple story where the layering comes from its characters. The politics is not so much in focus. The book gives the characters substantial backstories, something which isn't, of course, possible in a seven-part series. Do you think that will limit the viewer from investing in the characters wholly?Ribhu: For something like this, one needs to know what the main story is. For me, the main story has to start within the first 10 minutes of the first episode. For that, I feel we need to use our characters wisely only to the extent that they are needed. We need to understand who the big players are and bind the story around them. Bilal: Every genre comes with its own trappings, conventions and tropes, and so does every medium. In the book, I had more space to play with and so I could show Kabir's world a lot more and could also delve into other characters. But that doesn't mean we haven't developed them in the series. it's just that we may have focused on certain other aspects a little more.Ribhu, do you naturally gravitate towards thrillers, given you have a TE3N behind you and have just wrapped up shooting for The Girl on the Train remake?Ribhu: Yes, I am inclined towards thrillers. But the story should connect with me first, irrespective of the genre. I personally think that if you bind the drama in a story with a little bit of thrill, it elevates the story. Bilal: I think it's the adrenaline rush that you get. that really excites me as a writer and a viewer. I don't think any other genre apart from a thriller gives you that. Pick a seminal spy thriller you keep revisiting. Bilal: The Kill Artist by Daniel Silva is one of my favourite spy fiction novels. And as escapist as it is, I am a big fan of the Mission: Impossible series. It's great fun. Ribhu: The genre excites me, it can be slow or fast. There are some slow-burn films that are bonafide thrillers. and I love them.Bilal: Like Captain Phillips (starring Tom Hanks). how do you classify that? It's a drama, biopic, thriller. all three. 1707518 DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt.
