Overreach cry after Bengal governor comment

The statute (of a university) gives authority to the chancellor and the vice-chancellor in day-to-day matters (of the university). No one else has the authority under the act and I have studied all the acts of the universities, no one has (the authority). The role is only of the vice-chancellor and the chancellor and the bodies created thereunder. You have a court, the executive council," Dhankhar said.Education minister Partha Chatterjee, speaking as Trinamul secretary-general, had said Dhankhar had gone to the JU campus ignoring pleas by the chief minister that "the Governor being the constitutional head need not go at this moment".According to the Jadavpur University Act, 1981, an official of the institute said, the VC is not required to consult the chancellor on running day-to-day affairs. "The VC enjoys ample authority to run the university through various bodies," the official said.A section of academics said if the governor got involved in running the day-to-day affairs of a university, it could amount to "overreach"."Like the state government, the chancellor, too, is supposed to stay away from the daily functioning of a university. Although the chancellor is the appointing authority, the VC can only consult the chancellor in matters of exigency," a retired registrar of JU said.A former vice-chancellor of another university, however, said Bengal VCs "do not consult the chancellor on matters they are expected to and, instead, take help of the state government, disrupting the chain of command".He cited the example of Abhijit Chakrabarti's resignation as JU vice-chancellor on January 11, 2015."Chakrabarti stepped down in the face of a sustained students' protest. He was supposed to convey his decision to quit to the chancellor. Instead, he communicated the decision to chief minister Mamata Banerjee through a text message. The chief minister read out the message before the protesting students," the former VC said.A VC said the chancellor had on September 4 asked the heads of all state universities at a meeting at Raj Bhavan to go through the statutes and find out whether the laws said anything on developing a mechanism for direct communication between the chancellor and the VCs.The Mamata Banerjee government has made several changes to the statutes governing the state universities to ensure the government has a say in crucial matters, including appointments."However, the sections related to the powers and duties of the vice-chancellor have not been altered," an official at JU said. The act states: "The vice-chancellor shall be the principal executive and academic officer of the university.... The vice-chancellor shall have the power to exercise general control and supervision over all the officers of the university and all the teachers and generally over all the affairs of the university.."Trinamul Congress secretary-general Partha Chatterjee, who is also education minister, had issued a statement hours after the chancellor left the JU campus alleging that he had gone there despite the chief minister's advice against it. "Honourable governor went there without taking the state government into confidence. On his way, he rang up the CM. CM requested him several times that the Governor being the constitutional head need not go at this moment. The CM requested him to give the government some time to peacefully solve the issue. But instead of taking the government into confidence, the governor went there to help BJP," Chatterjee wrote. You know, you are aware about our position. We have mentioned about this in the past. But my request is just hold on. Just hold on for the meeting tomorrow. I think it's not very far," Kumar said.In less than two days after the 'Howdy, Modi!' event in Houston, Trump and Modi will meet again for bilateral talks on Tuesday following Trump's address to the UN general debate. On Monday, Trump praised the 'Howdy, Modi!' mega rally in the presence of the Pakistani premier and said he has heard a "very aggressive statement" by Modi at the event."I heard a very aggressive statement yesterday. I was there. I didn't know I was going to hear that statement...but I was sitting there. And I heard a very aggressive statement yesterday, from India, from the prime minister," Trump said. However, at the same time, he said the statement was "very well received within the room.""And I will say it was very well received within the room, the statement itself. That was a big room, 59,000 people. But it was a very aggressive statement. And I hope that they're going to be able to come together, India and Pakistan, and do something that's really smart and good for both. And I'm sure that...there's always a solution. And I really believe there's a solution to that," Trump said.During the 'Howdy, Modi!' community event on Sunday that was attended by over 50,000 members of the Indian diaspora and top US lawmakers, Modi, without naming Pakistan, said that India's decision to revoke Article 370 has troubled some people, who can't handle their own country and who support terrorism."Where do you find conspirators of 9/11 and 26/11 terror attacks," Modi had said, in an apparent reference to Pakistan. "It is time for a decisive battle against terrorism," Modi had said.In an unprecedented move, Trump had joined Modi for the event and at the end of the programme, the two leaders took a lap around the stadium, waving to the cheering crowd. On August 5, the Indian government revoked special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated it into two union territories.Reacting to India's move on Kashmir, Pakistan downgraded diplomatic ties with New Delhi and expelled the Indian high commissioner.Pakistan has been trying to internationalise the Kashmir issue but India has asserted that the abrogation of Article 370 was its "internal matter." New Delhi has also asked Islamabad to accept the reality and stop its anti-India rhetoric.Trump and Imran last met in July at the White House. During their first one-on-one interaction, the US President had expressed his willingness to mediate between India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir issue- an offer India rejected.During Modi's meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France last month, the Prime Minister categorically rejected any scope for third party mediation between India and Pakistan on Kashmir.According to a readout of the Monday's meeting between Trump and Khan issued by the White House, the two leaders discussed opportunities to deepen mutually beneficial energy cooperation and trade ties. They also discussed ways to de-escalate tension between Pakistan and India, including combating terrorism, and the importance of India-Pakistan dialogue to resolve disputes between them. HBO, Amazon win big at Emmy's

"I want to dedicate this to the strength of a woman, to (series creator) Amy Sherman-Palladino, to every woman on the Maisel cast and crew," Borstein said, and to her mother and grandmother. Her grandmother survived because she was courageous enough to step out of a line that, Borstein intimated, would have led to her death at the hands of Nazi Germany."She stepped out of line. And for that, I am here and my children are here, so step out of line, ladies. Step out of line," said Borstein, who also won the award last year.Shalhoub added to his three Emmys which he earned for his signature role in Monk. The awards opened without a host as promised, with an early exchange pitting Ben Stiller against Bob Newhart."I'm still alive," Newhart told Stiller, who introduced him as part of a wax museum comedy hall of fame that included Lucille Ball and George Burns.Kim Kardashian West and Kendall Jenner drew some mocking laughter in the audience when they presented the reality competition award after Kardashian West said their family "knows firsthand how truly compelling television comes from real people just being themselves." An animated Homer Simpson made a brief appearance on stage until he was abruptly crushed, with Anderson of black-ish rushing in to, as he vowed, rescue the evening. He called Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston on stage to tout the power of television from its beginning to the current golden age."Television has never been bigger. Television has never mattered more. And television has never been this damn good," Cranston said. The auditorium erupted in cheers when Jharrel Jerome of When They See Us, about the Central Park Five case, won the best actor award for a limited series movie."Most important, this is for the men that we know as the Exonerated Five," said Jerome, naming the five wrongly convicted men who were in the audience. They stood and saluted the actor as the crowd applauded them.It was the only honor for the acclaimed Netflix series of the evening; Chernobyl won the best limited series honor. The ceremony was brisk but, without a host, was overly reliant on the hit-and-miss jokes of presenters. It was ultimately the surprising wins such as Comer's and the meaningful selections of Porter and Jerome that made the show.HBO retained its durable front-runner status with the help of Game of Thrones' record-tying 12 wins. The channel had a total of 34 awards from Sunday and last weekend's creative arts ceremony. But streaming hit new Emmy heights, powered by Amazon Prime winners Fleabag, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and A Very English Scandal, and Netflix's Bandersnatch (Black Mirror), honored as best movie. Netflix collected 27 awards and Amazon nabbed 15.Michelle Williams, honored as best actress for her portrayal of dancer Gwen Verdon in FX's limited series Fosse/Verdon, issued a call to arms for gender and ethnic equality .She thanked the network and studio behind the project for "paying me equally because they understood ... when you put value into a person, it empowers that person to get in touch with their own inherent value. And where do they put that value, they put it into their work.""And so the next time a woman and, especially a woman of color, because she stands to make 52 cents on the dollar compared to her white male counterpart, tells you what she needs in order to do her job, listen to her," Williams said.Patricia Arquette won the trophy best supporting limited-series or movie actress for The Act. She paid emotional tribute to her late trans sister, Alexis Arquette , and called for an end to prejudice against trans people, including in the workplace.Ben Whishaw took the category's supporting actor trophy for A Very English Scandal, admitting in charming British fashion to a hangover.Alex Borstein and Tony Shalhoub of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won best comedy supporting acting awards. Game of Thronesresurrected the Iron Throne at Sunday's Emmy ceremony, ruling as top drama on a night of surprises in which Posestar Billy Porter made history and the comedy series Fleabagled a British invasion that overturned expectations."This all started in the demented mind of George R.R. Martin," said Game of Thronesproducer David Benioff, thanking the author whose novels were the basis of HBO's fantasy saga. Porter, who stars in the FX drama set in the LGBTQ ball scene of the late 20th century, became the first openly gay man to win a best drama series acting Emmy."God bless you all. The category is love, you all, love. I'm so overjoyed and so overwhelmed to have lived to see this day," said an exuberant Porter, resplendent in a sparkling suit and swooping hat.Amazon's Fleabag, a dark comedy about a dysfunctional woman, was honored as best comedy and earned writing and top acting honors for its British creator and star, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, as well as a best director trophy."This is getting ridiculous," Waller-Bridge said in her third trip to the stage to collect the top trophy. Her acting win blocked Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus from setting a record as the most-honored performer in Emmy history. Fleabag's showing denied a fond farewell for its final season."Nooooo!" a shocked-looking Waller-Bridge said as Louis-Dreyfus smiled for the cameras. "Oh, my God, no. Thank you. I find acting really hard and really painful. But it's all about this," she said, her acting trophy firmly in hand.In accepting the writing award earlier, she called the Emmy recognition proof that "a dirty, pervy, messed-up woman can make it to the Emmys."Porter, a Tony and Grammy Award winning performer, relished his groundbreaking moment. Quoting late writer James Baldwin, he said it took him many years to believe he has the right to exist."I have the right, you have the right, we all have the right," he said.English actress Jodie Comer was honored as best drama actress for Killing Eve. She competed with co-star Sandra Oh, who received a Golden Globe for her role and would have been the first actress of Asian descent to win an Emmy in the category."My mum and dad are in Liverpool (England) and I didn't invite them because I didn't think this was going to be my time. One, I'm sorry, two I love you," Comer said after saluting Oh. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Fishermen's body calls for nation-wide stir on Oct 15

"What the fishermen need is the right to fish. Many regulations in the policy and the Act are anti-fishermen. Take the case of MFRM Bill. It proposes to consider the whole exclusive economic zone of the country, that extends up to 200 nautical miles, as territorial waters. It also mandated that the Central Government has the right to regulate and manage activities in territorial waters. It's an infringement upon our rights. We want the parliamentarians to take up the issue," Peter said. Meanwhile, the Centre is of the stance that as per the recommendation of the National Policy on Marine Fisheries, it is initiating various activities to popularise deep sea fishing. Explained: How AWS lets users keep data within India

Within each region, AWS has multiple availability zones, each basically a collection of one or more data centres. Overall, a region is a collection of three or more availability zones — Amazon does not share the number of data centres around Mumbai. 'In India, we have three availability zones. We ensure is that each availability zone is independently fault tolerant,' Manav Sehgal, head of solutions architecture at Public Sector India, Amazon Internet Service Pvt. Ltd (AISPL), explained to The Indian Express. Within the availability zone, AWS ensures that risks like floods are taken into consideration. So if one data centre faces any risk of flooding, the other should have lower risk of flooding. Each availability zone is connected with a very high speed 'dark fibre' connectivity. Where are these data centres? 'We don't share exact location. Even I don't know the exact location,' said Sehgal, explaining how Amazon follows the 'principle of least privilege', of the 'first principle of security'. 'So if I, as a senior executive, don't need to know where my data centre is, I should not know. If we tell everyone where the data centres are, then that becomes a threat for all our customers,' he said. Can the customer choose where to keep data? The customer gets the choice to store data within India or choose to move it outside. This can be done from the AWS console itself by selecting the region. 'Customers for whom data sovereignty or data residency within India is important, like government customers, keep it in the Mumbai region,' Sehgal said. Have peanut butter for a healthier you

"It can help stop cravings that often lead to a person eating another portion. And its high protein and fibre content provides essential strength for bodily processes, making it a favourite snack of fitness enthusiasts," a spokesperson from Alpino Health Foods said. A tablespoonful of peanut butter contains almost 100 calories. But these calories are in the form of mono-unsaturated fats that aid weight loss and cut the risk of obesity thereby preventing heart disease. On the other hand, saturated fats, found in dips and fried chips, lead to high cholesterol and heart disease. So peanut butter an ideal food for the body. And the chunkier it is, the more filling and healthier it will be. PM not above law, says Sikh entrepreneur

Gina was sent to England at the age of 10 and studied at the fee-paying private Moira House Girls' School in Eastbourne.Three years ago she took on Theresa May over her government's decision to trigger article 50 of the Brexit Bill without parliamentary oversight - and won in the Supreme Court. Her battles against the Brexit lobby have made her one of the most hated figures in the country as the EU debate has become increasingly acrimonious and she is not able to move around without bodyguards. She is on her third marriage and has three children. She is also much admired for her feisty attitude to life and leading a determined fight against Boris's policy of exiting the UK without a deal.Speaking outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday, Miller, entrepreneur and Brexit campaigner, said the Prime Minister was not above the law. "Today is not a win for any individual or cause, it's a win for parliamentary sovereignty, the separation of powers and the independence of our British courts," she said."Crucially, today's ruling confirms that we are a nation governed by the rule of law. Laws that everyone, even the Prime Minister, is not above. MPs should turn up for work tomorrow and get on with scrutinising this government."We have had twice in three years to come to the Supreme Court, to ensure that the government does not put itself above the law."The ruling today speaks volumes. "This Prime Minister must open the doors of parliament tomorrow. MPs must get back and be brave and bold in holding this unscrupulous government to account." India vs South Africa: Jasprit Bumrah ruled out, Umesh Yadav named as replacement in India's Test squad

Bumrah will undergo rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, the statement said. 'The injury was detected during a routine radiological screening. He will now undergo rehabilitation at NCA and will be monitored by the BCCI medical team,' it added. Umesh Yadav, on the other hand, was not included in the India's 15-man squad as the selection committee felt there was no chance of him making it to the playing XI in the presence of Bumrah, Ishant and Shami. 'We generally don't play more than two pacers on Indian tracks, so it would've been very tough for Umesh to get a place in the side... There will be domestic cricket going on at that time so we wanted Umesh to take part in them,' India's chief selector MSK Prasad had said at the time of naming the Test squad. Ever since making his Test debut in South Africa, Bumrah has missed only 3 Test matches due to injury. Despite playing 12 out of 15 Tests, Bumrah has bowled the second most overs - 451.5 - among all Indian bowlers, only 4 overs less than Mohammed Shami, who has played in all 15 Tests. Only Pat Cummins, James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Josh Hazlewood have bowled more overs than Bumrah among fast bowlers since January 2018. But all of them have played more matches than Bumrah, who bowls about 38 overs per Test - the second best after Hazlewood's 39 overs per Test. : Virat Kohli (Capt), Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vc), Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (wk),Wriddhiman Saha (wk), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Shubman Gill function catchException() {try{ twitterJSDidLoad(); }catch(e){}} function getAndroidVersion(ua) {ua = (ua || navigator.userAgent).toLowerCase(); var match = ua.match(/android\\s([0-9\\.]*)/);return match ? match[1] : false;}; var versions='4.2.2'; var versionArray=versions.split(',');var currentAndroidVersion=getAndroidVersion();if(versionArray.indexOf(currentAndroidVersion)!=-1){var blocks = document.getElementsByTagName('blockquote'); for(var i = 0; i < blocks.length; i++){blocks[i].innerHTML = '';}}DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Japan's Kore-eda recreates Dickensian saga in Shoplifters

With English subtitles, the film will be a delight to watch. I quite enjoyed it when I first saw it at Cannes, and my second viewing at Chennai the other evening was as enjoyable as my first. Kore-eda recreates Dickensian characters. His Fagin is Osamu Shibata (played to unbelievable perfection by Lily Franky) and his little Oliver Twist is Shota (Jyo Kairi). Together, they shoplift and merrily so, piling up their loot in their ramshackle house, where their makeshift family lives. The man and the boy have a magical way of communicating with each other; they use sign language and subtle nods to warn each other about cameras in the shops where they venture for their sly scams. A scene from Kore-eda's Shoplifters. One bitterly cold evening, Osamu and Shota find a little girl (Miyu Sasaki) shivering, and they bring her home, where the man's wife, Nobuyo (Sakura Ando), cribs about having to feed an extra mouth. But when she sees bruises on the girl's body, Nobuyo takes pity and decides to have her. There are others in the house: Aki (Mayu Matsuoka), who goes to college but works as a hostess in her spare time. But the substantial part of the group's income comes from Grandma (Late Kirin Kiki), who is stealing her late husband's pension and freeloading off the man's son from a second marriage. But what comes as a shocker early on in the movie is that this cosy group of men and women are not a family in the real sense of the term. While Osamu and Nobuyo are actually husband and wife, the rest live with them, and are not related to one another. It is a group that has come together for an economic convenience. While Grandma's money comes in handy, she herself finds the company of others reassuring (I do not want to die a lonely death). The rest of them benefit as well from this marvellous arrangement. Spider-Man Far From Home movie review: A passable postscript to Avengers Endgame, but a marvellous ode to Iron Man But then, this is too good to last forever, and like the pile of oranges that slips off the basket in a store, Osamu's arrangement begins to develop cracks. Beneath a great plot, Shoplifters is sad reflection of modern-day Japanese society, where employment opportunities are shrinking, and where economic deprivation stares in your face. The film is a brutal look at what families are facing. In an interview, Kore-eda had said that members of a family were not always, and no longer, bound by love, affection and a sense of kinship. He added that the inspiration for the movie came from news reports about how family members were cheating, abusing and even killing one another. So, it was crime that often tied them together. Kore-eda's work apart from being a magnificent study of interpersonal relationships in the family he creates - where there is a trace of kindness and kinship - is also a comment on the labour condition in Japan -- whose inhumanness and rank cruelty were driving men and women towards a path of misery and ruin. Shoplifters is a great effort, and is narrated without any intrusive music - a horrible feature that mars most Indian films. Not to be missed this weekend. TRS adds piousness to Bathukamma saris

With this move, they are sure all possible protests from women over poor quality of saris would disappear After all, rural women folk are not expected to refuse a gift from God. The scheme, besides winning the hearts of women, is aimed at creating greater demand, and thus employment, to traditional weavers who get bulk orders for weaving Bathukamma saris by the government. This new trend has caught on fast during distribution of saris in all villages and towns. The state government has planned for free distribution of saris, with a blouse, to all women members of the over 1 crore white ration cardholders, at an estimated cost of `350 crore, with an aim to provide continuous work to poor weavers and eliminate suicides. The party has been at the receiving end last year from women who rejected their gift, saying the saris were of very low quality. This new trend, a precaution given the party's lack of surety about the quality of saris, to first offer them local goddess, hopes to frighten women beneficiaries and invoke superstitious pressures to accept them respectfully, to avoid inviting the wrath of the divine. Last year, at some places, women played Bathukamma around the saris, and later abandoned them on roads sides in erstwhile Karimnagar district. Rekha Naik, MLA, Khanapur decorated Sargamma, the local village deity with a sari, before distributing saris in Dasthurabad in Nirmal district. Satyawati Rathod, tribal welfare minister, offered a sari to Sammakka Saralamma, a traditional bamboo deity, in Warangal on Monday. ... Houston, we do not have a problem

New Delhi would be eager to interpret the show of warmth between Mr Trump and Mr Modi as a sign of success in foreign policy. After all, India's relationship with the US had entered a bit of a turbulent patch in recent times with Mr Trump's initial offer to mediate on the Kashmir issue. The shadow of that controversy has now been given a quiet burial by Mr Trump's enthusiastic backing of the Indian prime minister. Seldom does the US president describe another statesman as a 'special person'.It will not be an exaggeration to suggest that their mutual admiration is predicated on a shared vision. The issue of terrorism remains a common concern between India and the US. Mr Modi did the correct thing by invoking these overlapping issues, describing the abrogation of Article 370 as a step to neutralize the threats of separatism and terrorism in Kashmir. Mr Trump responded by saying that the question of border security lies on the mind of both India and the US. Islamabad, New Delhi would be hoping, would pay special attention to this utterance. The other pivotal element in Indo-US partnership happens to be trade. The tensions in this relationship - Mr Trump had christened India as the 'king of tariffs' - remain unaddressed. Mr Modi and Mr Trump must now act together to smooth out the creases. 1706903 1706890 DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Where the grass is white

Saccharum spontaneum is, apparently, a grass native to India, especially its riverine chars. Incidentally, Ray's discovery of the difference between flower and grass had come at a price.Ray chronicled his moment of discovery and subsequent despair inimitably in Our Films, Their Films (1976). "I remember the first day's shooting of Pather Panchali very well... It was an episode in the screenplay where the two children of the story, brother and sister, stray from their village and chance upon a field of kaash flowers... At the end of the first day's shooting we had eight shots... However, the scene was only half finished, and on the following Sunday we were back on the same location. But was it the same location?... What was on the previous occasion a sea of fluffy whiteness was now a mere expanse of uninspiring brownish grass." A local peasant had solved the riddle for the puzzled director. Kaashphul, he had informed Ray, is snack for cattle.Kaash is also a source of sustenance for neglected cultivators whom economists have christened small and marginal farmers. Each year, the harvest of Kaash supplements the meagre incomes of these farmers in both East and West Bengal. Further north, in Nepal, Kans grass is also used as a protective layering while building thatched roofs. In spite of its alluring whiteness, Kaash has a dark side. Scientists say that it is a stubbornly invasive species that has been known to colonize pastures and threaten croplands. But the uses and abuses of Kaash are, of course, incidental to the urbane, Bengali imagination that has diligently created a hierarchy of Bengal's flowers. Interestingly, Kaash, its earthy roots notwithstanding, has managed to displace several other autumnal cousins that have greater - indisputable - claims on gentility. For example, the Alstonia scholaris - we know it by the name of Chhatim - flowers under the same autumnal sky. Chhatim even boasts of a dizzying, almost hypnotic, fragrance: it is known as the Devil's tree for a reason. Unlike Kaash, it has also been bestowed with the seal of approval from none other than Rabindranath Tagore. (No convocation ceremony in Visva-Bharati, the university founded by Tagore, is deemed complete without the presentation of Chhatim leaves to graduating students.) Kaash also faces stiff competition from yet another autumnal sibling: Shiuli (Night-flowering Jasmine). Not many flowers can lay claim to a melody composed by Dinendranath Tagore. But Shiuli can. Yet, popular representations of autumn have not found a place for either Shiuli or Chhatim. Bengal's autumnal setting is inevitably etched in artworks, including the ones by the chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, that depict swaying, merry white blades under an azure sky. However, Kaash's triumph cannot be attributed to the whims of artists, great and small. A deeper, unconscious, philosophy could be at play here. Autumn, as the Poets have reminded us, is synonymous with turning - of seasons, light and, most importantly, time. Keats immortalized this season's richness and abundance - its "mellow fruitfulness" - in "To Autumn"; yet he could not help notice that the "barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day". The suggestion of a shift in the illumination, the turning of the light, could well be a portentous metaphor for the inevitability of the march of time towards an eerie transition. Yeats wrote on autumn when the change had already set in. "The Wild Swans at Coole" was published well into the dawn of industrialism, nearly one hundred years after the publication of Keats's poem. Yet, even in these verses, autumn resonates with the sadness of time past ("I have looked upon those brilliant creatures,/ And now my heart is sore./ All's changed since I, hearing at twilight,/ The first time on this shore"). In this season of turning, amidst the lengthening shadow of turmoil integral to change, the seasonal, but certain, flowering of Kaash, year on year, seems to herald the hope of continuity, of a calmness in the face of, or even heroic resistance to, an imminent, irrevocable interruption. This symbolic confrontation between the flower and the season in which it blooms has been ignored in the iconographies of autumnal Bengal. The emphasis in these cosmetic representations has been, more often than not, on a harmony that could well be superfluous in terms of ideas. Ray, characteristically, was alert to the potential of this dissonance. There are glimpses of Kaash and of tall, riverine reeds in Pather Panchali and Devi, respectively, but it is in the former, Ray's first film, that this tension is laid bare in a masterful, memorable sequence. In it, Apu and Durga, the brother and sister that Ray refers to in the passage in Our Films, Their Films, are seen walking gingerly through a field forested with Kaash. The curious children stop to inspect a power pylon. A little later, the sister is alerted first to the sound of the approaching train, and the children break through that enchanting refuge of flowers, running towards the locomotive - their run, from the canopy of whiteness towards the hurtling, rumbling train, conveying, tenderly yet also brutally, the inevitability of a transformation in the lives of not just Apu and Durga but also a village, an entire rural community. In the light of a changing India that remains intoxicated - and jubilant - on the incarceration of people, be it in Assam's detention centres or in clamped down Kashmir, it could well be that Ray, just like those prescient Poets, may have been signalling the inexorable triumph of an unsettling future over a quiet, reassuring past. Butterflies & all things good

I was beginning to think that some jealous columnist, unable to achieve my level of universal popularity, must have plotted to deprive my pen of ink.Suddenly a smiling butterfly caused a pleasurable itch on the right hand and told me that I had become the Chosen One.Horizontality was a privileged position, she said, because I would now have the power to see what no one else could see and understand the undercurrents of events that no one else could understand. Just as she said, I can now see the invisible small print that follows headline events. Consider the triumphant diplomatic exercise that our Prime Minister carried out to win international support to our integration of Kashmir into India.Three of the UN's Big Five, namely France, Russia and the US, told him that Kashmir was India's internal affair. Then came the small print. France sent a special envoy to Delhi to clinch the sale of new Rafael fighter jets, Scorpene submarines and Caracal helicopters. Russia ensured that India paid $6 billion as initial instalment for the purchase of S-400 missile systems.Trump called for early steps for India's planned investments in the US energy sector. Once the hard bargaining was successfully completed, the three "friends" proceeded to cheating. They joined China and Britain so that the UN's Big Five could jointly reject India's stand that Kashmir was an internal matter. The US expressed concern over "detentions and continued restrictions on residents in J&K." The European Parliament took up Kashmir for discussion. How can our Prime Minister be subjected to such treachery? Friends behave like enemies even in matters economic. The whole world knows that India is on the verge of becoming a $5 trillion economy (Please note the $ sign, no desi rupee.) This makes other facts and figures irrelevant. The Reserve Bank has released data showing that the destructive impact of demonetisation is continuing. The automobile industry is in doldrums with 3.5 lakh employees dismissed and a spokesman telling a minister point-blank that the note ban left people without money to buy cars. There are other anti-nationals who say that for the first time India's GDP growth rate has fallen behind Pakistan's. It is behind Nepal's, Bhutan's and Bangladesh's as well. But the leaders of none of these countries have received high national awards from the UAE, Bahrain or France. Besides, why bring up such things when we are looking at $5 trillion? Fortunately, those who run the country have not lost sight of the national priorities. The systems that condition people's minds and run the institutions that govern our lives have all been reconfigured to serve One Nation, One Party, One Leader.Attempts by journalists to subvert this system are immediately suppressed. Recently, a journalist reported that schoolchildren in UP were served chapattis with only salt as accompaniment. The duty-conscious Yogi Adityanath government immediately charge-sheeted the journalist.A Hindi journalist who put anti-Yogi comments on social media was arrested; he was later bailed out by the Supreme Court. Journalists have become a threat to democracy. Will the judiciary also become a threat? Justice Deepak Gupta recently expressed views that would sound normal in a functioning democracy but sounded ominous in today's India. Citizens "have the right to criticise the government," he said."Criticism of the government by itself cannot amount to sedition." One of these days Yogi Adityanath will express the ultimate decision on that. Till then, we can munch on Jean-Paul Sartre's words: "Fascism is not defined by the number of its victims, but the way it kills them."P.S. The average life span of the butterfly, symbol of hope and all things good, is two weeks. Box office festival: Latest Bollywood releases that clocked surprising numbers

Total Dhamaal Collection: Rs 228 croreBudget: Rs 100 croreUSP: Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit back together after 17 years. The duo, who had been part of some outstanding cinema in the past, were seen as a couple in Total Dhamaal again. Audiences lapped it up and made no bones of the poor script and half-hearted VFX. Kabir Singh Collection: Rs 372 croreBudget: Rs 68 croreUSP: A sleeper hit called Arjun Reddy. This Telugu hurricane had such an impact in the South that it couldn't help take the entire nation by storm. It's said that even the dissenters of the film watched it more than once. Now that's called "no bad publicity". Uri: The Surgical StrikeCollection: Rs 342 croreBudget: Rs 25 croreUSP: Right timing. The film released in January 2019 and in February, 40 CRPF jawans were killed in one of India's deadliest terror strikes in Pulwama. Call it nationalism or anything else this film was an unintended surgical strike at a time when people wanted to know about the Indian defence force and its covert operations. If the box office could smile, it would probably be laughing now.Gone are the days when Rs 100 crore box-office collection of a film made news but as the Hindi film industry is now truly global with theatre releases and digital platforms streaming films post-theatre runs, Rs 200 crore collection seems to be the new normal. Some films, however, do not belong to any club and make their own space by raking in numbers never heard of in Hindi cinema before. Here are some latest releases that have clocked surprising numbers at the box-office.Mission MangalCollection: Rs 200 croreBudget: Rs 32 croreUSP: First space film made in India on an Indian mission. The film ticks all boxes required for a good run at the box office. Advanced VFX, women leads, in-depth content, nationalistic ending. What more do we seek from a film made in such a needy budget. SaahoCollection: Rs 424 croreBudget: Rs 350 croreUSP: Prabhas's first release after the blockbuster Bahubali. This hype was enough to push the collection scales to a degree where the audiences are compelled to give it a watch at least once. In film parlance it's called - FAN LOYALTY. Power pangs scupper bill payments

I visited two ATP machines in Jharia, but found that both weren't working has there was no power back-up," said the teacher of DAV School-Sindri.Chaubey managed to pay up on Monday, but after being considerably inconvenienced. "Today, I had to wait for more than an hour at the JBVNL office counters at Jharia to pay my electricity bills," he said.GM of JBVNL's Dhanbad area Pratosh Kumar claimed he was not aware of the power back-up issues. "Some of the old machines may be devoid of power back-up facilities, but we will ensure all machines have power back-up at the earliest," he said.Jharkhand Rajya Bijli Kamgar Union general secretary Ramkrishna Singh said the state of ATP machines was the same in areas like Dhanbad, Sindri, Nirsa and Katras. "A majority of the ATP machines are devoid of power back-up. Though there is an online payment option using the JBVNL website, most aren't Net-savvy. I cannot go against my heart: Meera Chopra

It's very difficult to do something which is against the way you look. It's difficult to break that stereotype in the industry. I wanted to break it but couldn't. I wasn't getting the kind of roles I wanted,' she said. The actor, who was last seen opposite Sharman Joshi in 1920 London, says she was getting similar roles which she didn't want. So, when the opportunity to star in Section 375 came, she jumped at it. 'I had to go through five-six auditions. The first one was extremely bad and the director said I won't be able to do it. 'He said 'she doesn't look like that character from any angle. She looks too polished and refined. How will we do it?' I really had to work too hard on the look. I had decided I had to crack this because I didn't know if I would get such a role in the future. I have faced a lot of difficulties.' Directed by Ajay Bahl, the court-room drama features Richa Chadha, Akshaye Khanna and revolves around the Section 375 of Indian Penal Code laws and explores the issue of sexual harassment. Meera hopes the film and the reception to her performance will make it easier to do the kind of films she wants to. 'There were so many times when my parents told me to come back to Delhi. I live in Mumbai alone. There are days when you are completely jobless. You are getting decent films from decent filmmakers but you are refusing them because your heart is not allowing you to do those films. 'I would often tell myself, 'I don't have work, let me do this,' but then there's something that always stops you. c… I don't know what kept me going for four years. My faith was that I would be able to crack it. I still don't know if I have cracked it!' Meera will be next seen on an Amazon Prime Webseries. Kumar Sanu ready to sing duet with Ranu Mandol

'Let's wait to see how she (Ranu) performs in the coming days,' said the singer of evergreen hits like 'Tujhe Dekha' and 'Mera Dil Bhi Kitna Pagal Hai'. In the time of technology, he said, non-singers have become performers along with those who can sing really well. 'The change in technology has transformed the musical scene a crowded place,' Sanu said on Monday. But he also added that any change is good if it is for the better. About his Durga Puja album Kheyali Din, an ensemble of six songs, he said, the numbers will bring back the flavour of the '90s. No slowdown in automobile sector, claims traders body CAIT

Citing an example of new vehicle launches, he said companies have received huge number of bookings, which do not reflect any slowdown in the sector. Talking about recent festival sales announced by global e-commerce firms like Amazon and Flipkart, Khandelwal demanded immediate action from the government to ban these mega sales. He claimed that such firms are violating foreign direct investment (FDI) norms in the e-commerce sector. "If the government does not take action, we will approach the court," he said. He also said these e-commerce companies are allowed to do only B2B business but they are indulging in big advertisement campaign. "These companies are not doing business, this is the business of valuation. They should give details of top 10 vendors in the last five years," he said. He also said interest rates are high in India and global firms get loans at cheap rates. One dead, 7 injured as leopard goes on rampage in Jharkhand village

Singh, who is camping in the village, said the villagers with sticks and other weapons tried to capture the animal in the morning but the panicked leopard injured seven of them. 'Six people were sent to Maheshpur hospital for treatment while one Stephen Hansda,40, who is serious, was referred to PMCH, Dhanbad,' Singh said. Forest officials gave away Rs 25,000 to Tudu's kin for final rites and Rs 25,000 to Hansda for treatment. As per the forest department's rule, a compensation of Rs 4 lakh is given if one dies in a man-animal conflict. Singh said, 'The village crowd is posing trouble in driving away the animal. If need arises, we will impose section 144 to keep the situation under control.' Singh said houses in the village were scattered and there were farm fields in between the houses where the leopard was hide and seek. 'Since we neither had tranquilliser nor its expert to capture the leopard, we have sought guidelines from the divisional forest officer,' he said. Villagers said this was the first incident of killing by leopard in the village in recent years. One such incident took place a year back at Agua hill, which is located five kilometer away from the village, a villager said. The forest officials said the leopard might have come from the Agua hill where forest cover was degrading for past few years. The animal might have deviated from its route and entered the village. State wildlife board member DS Srivastava said, 'Santhal region has good population of leopards. With tree cover degrading in the region, now they are coming out of the forest and entering villages in search of food.' Sudeep is a director's actor: Krishna

Since the film had a lot of action scenes, Krishna says he didn't want to take more stress. 'As a cinematographer, you are required to worry about the angles and how to capture them. I believe that doing one job well is more than enough.' Krishna is happy with the response to Pailwaan that released last week. Ask him was there any pressure to handle a star like Kichcha Sudeep, he grins, 'My intention was to add a bit of social awareness, along with entertainment. That way, when the audience watches the film, they are entertained as well as some thought is put into their mind.' Talking about the research he put in, Krishna says, 'There are many traditional wrestling villages in and around mid and north Karnataka. We met wrestlers, learned about their working style and went ahead with what visually-appealed for the film.' The director says it was a conscious decision to infuse two sports into one script. 'That was the story arc. Sudeep plays the role of a wrestler and boxer. Had I showed my lead character as a champion in a single sport, it would have been predictable. So, I had to design Kichcha's character accordingly, retaining the underdog element—how this guy loses spirit and bounces back in life,' Krishna explains. But why a sports film? 'It's a safe bet because everyone already knows the climax. The hero is going to win and the audience, naturally, doesn't expect anything beyond. You tell a story and if it's a good one, it will work.' Krishna acknowledges all sports films are the same. 'Even if people compare Pailwaan with Sultan or Dangal, it's a positive one. Once we finished the script, we knew where Pailwaan stood,' tells Krishna. The screenplay of Pailwaan was written by Madhu, Kannan and Krishna himself. 'Madhu, Kannan and I headed three different teams. First, I wrote my draft, met Madhu and made some corrections. Next, I met Kannan and did the same. After that we three sat together and discussed every aspect of the story. Our focus was to make the film as engaging as we can. In fact, we worked on the screenplay for almost four months,' shares Krishna. Before shooting, Krishna had a story reading session of Pailwaan with a team and gauged their reactions. 'It's always better to sit and discuss ideas. This helps me understand where I went wrong and what can be changed in the script. We tell the story with no exaggeration, and expect honest feedback and the reason behind someone's criticism,' says Krishna. Had Sudeep not agreed to do Pailwaan, Krishna says he would not have made the film. 'I wrote the story having only Kichcha in mind. He is a director's actor and getting him to do something he hadn't done before was the drive,' he adds. 'Sudeep and I share a 13-year old friendship. He was the hero in my first major film as a cinematographer and we have worked together in 4 films. There is a lot of trust between us. I am not a good narrator and most people who listen to my scripts won't understand the vision of my film, but Kichcha is an exception. Cinema is a common connection for both of us. When we quarrel, it is only about the content. He helped start Pailwaan by giving us money. So it's important that we didn't misuse or disappoint him because he was standing by us.' At the same time, Krishna is aware of the expectations when a star is involved. 'Every sports film is a positive experience and it's nice to motivate people. Even though all the Rocky movies were the same, every single one has inspired me,' he adds. Kannada cinema has evolved over a period time, observes Krishna, adding, 'The potential in the content takes the film to a pan-India level. It's easier for the audience to identify good films these days.' On bringing Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty on board, Krishna adds he wanted a strict kind of a 'father figure'. 'The audience hasn't seen Suniel like that, so I thought this will appear fresh on-screen. For his age, he looks unbelievably fit.' Krishna ritually follows Tamil films, too. 'I would love to direct Ajith and Vijay. It's a dream to work with them,' he smiles. What's next? 'I want to go on a break with my family as everyone was involved in Pailwaan. I have four to five drafts ready. Let me see what works screenplay-wise,' signs off Krishna. Taekwondo tales

His dream is to compete in the 2024 Olympics. "Not many know that Taekwondo is an Olympic sport, and awareness about it very low among the youth. This is why it is difficult to find sponsors. Every sportsman needs sponsors to keep playing International championships in order to improve his/her Olympic rankings. There is no publicity around Taekwondo like it is there in case of cricket or badminton. In fact, my coaches are mulling starting something on the lines of IPL for Taekwondo. In the meantime, I have taken it upon myself to popularise the sport as much as I can," says this Yousufguda resident. Deepak has two more Guinness World records to his credit. "I hold the records for the 'most full contact elbow strikes in one minute' (142 alternate elbow strikes) and the most 'full contact knee strikes in three minutes with one leg' (175 knee strikes)." He has dedicated these feats to the soldiers who lay down their lives for the country, and also wants to promote the Fit India Movement through them. So how did it all start for the serial record holder? "The love for martial arts was instilled in me by my father who was Bruce Lee's fan. I got a head start in the field when I started learning karate in school. After Abhinav Bindra won a gold medal in shooting in the 2008 Olympics, I was inspired to achieve a similar feat in martial arts. In my search for the right sport to play, I met Master Moinuddin and Grandmaster M Jayanth Reddy. My coaches, along with mentor Ashish Taneja, are responsible for steering my capabilities in the right direction," shares Deepak. This is not the first time that the Taekwondo champ is contemplating saying no to the corporate world. "I got a job in Google after completing my BTech, but I left it to pursue my passion. The same college offered me an MBA course free of cost, and I completed it this year," he says. While he dreams about the Olympics, Deepak is training four hours a day and chasing other world records. A birthday card, from Northeast

There are specific milestones which I noticed under his leadership which are admirable. Being a sportsperson, the first thing that comes to my mind is how sports are being promoted and taken to the next level. Setting aside the other achievements, through Khelo India, sportspersons are benefitting a lot — new and young talents are being identified, recognised and nurtured in all possible ways to excel. The achievers are being encouraged to do better. I believe that with this pace — from both the government and sportspersons — we will surely perform better in the times to come. There is no doubt that Prime Minister Modi is health conscious and, because of his personal involvement, yoga is recognised throughout the world and practised to build a healthier society. It is great to see a prime minister personally performing yoga and setting an example for the citizens. His initiative, the 'Fit India Movement' is also one of the more unique and significant steps to have been taken. Yes, fitness comes first and it is a prerequisite for moving forward and becoming more productive in life. In India, the declining child sex ratio presented a dreadful scenario. The ratio of the girl child was falling steeply compared to boys due to various societal reasons. Under PM Modi's leadership, a campaign was launched for the welfare of girls as well as to make people more aware of the declining child sex ratio through the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao initiative. This is something I consider to be a very welcome move, and certainly worth working for. I do believe that in a few years from now, there is going to be visible positive change visible not only in this ratio, but also in the attitude and mindset of the people. We are witnessing how women achievers are proving their mettle in various fields: There is a renewed confidence that we (women/girls) can do it. Cleanliness is next to godliness. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, an initiative towards a cleaner India, has been a great success — it has been one of the most effective campaigns, featuring very high participation by one and all. This mission has immensely benefited the entire nation. Cities and localities are becoming cleaner, and several states and union territories have been declared open defecation-free. It is also a silent reminder of how we ought to be more responsible citizens — that we are as responsible as the government. The credit goes to PM Modi for spearheading the movement and taking it to the people, making it a mass movement. Another initiative which is close to the PM's heart is the Clean Ganga mission. Efforts are being made now to arrest pollution in the river, and an integrated programme, 'Namami Gange', has been launched for this. We are all aware of the harmful impact of plastic pollution on Mother Nature. Recently, during his Independence Day address to the nation, PM Modi made an appeal to the people of India to shun the use of single-use plastic, and encouraged everyone to use cloth and jute bags. Beating plastic pollution is something which I feel is the need of the hour to make our environment cleaner and sustainable. I belong to Northeast India, a region blessed with very talented and hard-working people but which did not receive much attention in the past few decades. PM Modi's attention and attitude towards the Northeast is not only heartening, it is ensuring fast-paced progress in the entire region. We are seeing rapid development through infrastructure projects, agriculture and in the deployment of special schemes for the Northeast. This focus gives confidence to the people of our region and will give great results in the future. The dedication of PM Modi to serve the nation deserves great respect. I have complete faith in him that, in the time to come — and under his leadership, our country will reach the glorious heights of progress. I wish him a healthy and long life! 'PoK is part of India. We will physically occupy it,' says EAM Jaishankar

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu have made similar statements in recent weeks, amid Pakistan's attempts to internationalise Kashmir after India's decision to end special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and split it into two Union Territories. The government has said the move will ensure that Jammu and Kashmir gets the same benefits as the rest of the country. Pakistan has condemned the action and has vowed to take it up at the UN. On the possibility of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan PM Imran Khan meeting at the UN General Assembly session in New York later this month, the minister said: "Just look at the climate of relations right now and that should give you the answer." Jaishankar also responded to questions on the way foreign media has been reporting the security measures in Jammu and Kashmir since Article 370 move. "People are entitled to their views. I have rarely seen a story from anyone that 370 was a temporary provision," he said. "Don't worry about what people will say on Jammu and Kashmir. India's position clear since 1972. On my issue, my position will prevail. I've spent a lot of my working life dealing with the US Congress. They say a lot of things because people go to individual members, and say 'you need to say this'." On Monday, US President Donald Trump said he would meet both PM Modi and Imran Khan soon. He also said he thought a "lot of progress had been made". To a question on what message the "Howdy, Modi!" event in Houston on Sunday - which Trump and PM Modi are expected to address jointly -- held for Pakistan, Mr Jaishankar said: "It's not just Pakistan...the whole world will be watching the Houston event and take lessons from what Indian Americans have achieved. There are multiple messages there. It's for the Pakistanis to read what they wish into it." Jaishankar said Pakistan would remain a "unique challenge" until it "successfully" addressed cross-border terrorism and "becomes a normal neighbour". "Show me anywhere else in the world where a country conducts terrorism against its neighbour as part of its foreign policy," Jaishankar said. He added: "Pakistan is only talking but actually doing nothing on terrorism. Our position is normal and rational. Their behaviour is an aberration, the abnormality is there." ... Voices rise in IIM too on Tabrez reversal

We urge you to act swiftly and decisively by directing the state government to institute a fresh probe. It is the constitutional duty of the State to protect the life and liberty of all citizens," the appeal added.Police in Jharkhand, governed by the BJP, have been accused of converting the charge against the accused from murder into the relatively milder culpable homicide not amounting to murder. In June, Tabrez, accused of theft, died a few days after being assaulted by the mob that forced him to chant "Jai Shri Ram" and "Jai Hanuman". Film Federation of India to organise Bharat-Bangla Film Awards

Indian films, including Bengali releases, are very popular in neighbouring countries like Bangladesh but do not have proper release network, he said. A jury committee, consisting of filmmaker Goutam Ghosh, actor-minister Bratya Basu, actress Tanushree Chakraborty apart from a producer and a journalist from here, will select the Bengali films nominated for awards, Hasan said adding that there will be award in 12 categories. From the Bangladesh side, he said, there will also be 12 categories in which films will vie for honours. The Bangladeshi films will be judged and evaluated by a jury consisting of filmmakers, journalists and critics of the neighbouring country. There will also be awards for films in eight regional languages - Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Bhojpuri, Gujarati and Hindi to be screened from the Indian side as part of the effort to promote regional cinema. Goutam Ghosh, who was present at the press meet, advocated opening a single-window system so that films from both the countries can reach out to a larger audience. He said, 'I have felt the need to have an award ceremony to celebrate Bengali films from India and Bangladesh on a single stage.' Ghosh directed Indo-Bangla co-productions Moner Manush (2010) and Sankhochil (2016). Hasan said the single screens are on the decline in both countries and the producers' body is concerned about the situation and do something. While the number of single screens has come down from 700 to not more than 280-290 in West Bengal, in Bangladesh the figure has gone down from 1200 to 300, he said. 'We need regular events on a sustained basis in both the countries to celebrate our cinema and make the industry of both countries viable,' he said.
