Golfers eye greens, jacket
So I would say that this year there's probably a very good probability that one of those guys will get it done,' Rose said. Third-ranked Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, a four-time major winner, needs a Masters win to become only the sixth golfer to complete a career Grand Slam. There's a trio of top-10 Americans with major wins lacking one at Augusta National, including second-ranked Dustin Johnson, three-time major winner Brooks Koepka (fourth) and 2017 PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas (fifth). 'I think it's just a coincidence that nobody in the top 10 has won the Masters. It definitely speaks to the new wave of players,' Thomas said. Three more US players seek their first major title: Bryson DeChambeau (sixth), Rickie Fowler (ninth) and Xander Schauffele (10th). Mix in reigning seventh-ranked reigning British Open champion Francesco Molinari of Italy and sixth-ranked Spaniard Jon Rahm, who shared fourth last year in only his second Masters start, and there's an element of extra hunger under the Georgia pines this week. 'The most important thing I learned last year is that Augusta National, expect for the par-5s, plays over par. So if you make par, don't get frustrated. That's just the way it is around this course,' Rahm said. Rahm, 24, could not claw back from an opening 75 last year despite firing the lowest Masters third-round score of 65, but won the Spanish Open the following week. 'I hope my putting is a lot better than it was last year,' Rahm said. 'I feel strong in every part of my game. I just want to make a few more putts than I did last year,' he added. The only golfer among the world's top 16 who has won the Masters is 14-time major winner Tiger Woods. And the 12th-ranked American, now 43, won his most recent of four Masters crowns in 2005. Thunderstorms closed the course Tuesday afternoon with more severe weather forecast Wednesday, but most players in the field of 87 — matching the smallest since Woods won in 1997 — practiced before the rain struck. Rose, the 2013 US Open winner, uses his ranking to motivate not pressure, especially after winning as world number one at Torrey Pines in January. 'I use it as maybe a little inspiration, certainly not as an expectation,' Rose said. Chandigarh: PM Modi's photos adorn police station in afternoon, disappear in the evening
The code of conduct came into effect on March 10. A team of Chandigarh Newsline visited the classroom, which shares a boundary wall with the office of SDPO (East) inside police station, Sector 26, around 2 pm. The team stayed in the classroom for around 15 minutes. Around 21 students, including boys and girls from Bapu Dham Colony, Manimajra, Indira Colony, were sitting in the classroom and a tutor, Pardeep Kumar, was teaching them about various concepts of hotel management. One of the students told Newsline, 'Classes are held in two batches. The first batch starts from 10 am to 1pm, while the second is from 2 pm to 5 pm. It is a three-month-long course after which we will also be given certificates.'' Another classroom for the retail management course is situated on the first floor inside the police station. When contacted, chief electoral officer (CEO) A K Sinha said, 'I will definitely inquire into this. But I can comment only after checking the facts.' But soon after this conversation, DSP Charanjeet Singh, spokesman of the UT Police, called Newsline claiming that no such picture of PM Modi was on display in any of the classrooms, including the one in Sector 26 police station. The spokesman shared over a dozen pictures of different classrooms, including of Sector 26 police station, showing blank walls where the Newsline team had earlier seen photos of PM Modi. Other classrooms were situated in Sector 34 police station and in Sector 24 police post. The course was started on February 27. SSP Nilambri Vijay Jagdale, when contacted, said, 'There is no question about classrooms being operational because batches of these students got cancelled due to a technical snag at National Skill Development Corporation. We are in the process of registering new batches.' To resolve this confusion, Newsline contacted Jayanta Das, managing partner/director at Primero Skills and Training, which is conducting these courses, but he refused to answer any question over the phone. Under PMKVY, the central government collaborates with the Chandigarh Police to offer free-of-cost professional courses, including those of hotel management, retail and computers, to children selected from slum and rehabilitation colonies. The training has been outsourced to Primero Skills and Training, a Delhi-based organisation. Mill workers vote for change
here are 1,300 voters in two polling booths in Panchgram. Congress president Rahul Gandhi during a poll campaign at the Intuc field of Panchgram on April 9 had said the mill would be revived within six months if the Congress came back to power. The HPC Paper Mills Revival Action Committee also submitted memoranda twice to Rahul, seeking the mill's revival.Prime Minister Narendra Modi also promised to revive the mills before the 2016 Assembly polls. A convener of the committee, Azizur Rahman Mazumdar, alleged that Modi had visited Barak Valley twice before the Lok Sabha polls but never said anything about the mill's revival. He added that the mill workers also campaigned against the BJP's "false promise" and urged people across the valley to think about their own conditions before exercising their franchise.Mazumdar said 51 mill employees have died so far. Of them, two committed suicide owing to penury. He said they were unable to pay for their children's education, treatment or insurance policies. He said owing to the closure of Cachar Paper Mill of Panchgram in Hailakandi district and Nagaon Paper Mill of Jagiroad in Morigaon district, at least 2 lakh people have been affected.Following the suspension of production at both the mills, a crisis of paper has occurred in the domestic market. The price of paper is being controlled by the private parties. Private parties have doubled the price of paper and the country is being compelled to import paper from China, Korea and Bangladesh to meet the domestic requirement, one of the memoranda said.Cachar Paper Mill falls under Karimganj (SC) constituency, while Nagaon Paper Mill under Nowgong constituency. Both the constituencies went to the polls on Thursday. The distance between both the paper mills is about 450km. Panchgram is approximately 350km from the state headquarters, Guwahati. When Alia stumped Papa Bhatt
"She hadn't learnt all this traditional dancing." So where did that come from? It came from many months of learning and 20 days of intense rehearsals. "She's a very driven girl," remarked Mahesh. She won't give up until she has learnt what she has to do before the camera. Incidentally, the pre-Partition drama, Kalank, was given a U/A certificate by the censor board without a single cut or debate. Which must have surprised producer Karan Johar and his company, given the bloody and very communally charged times before Partition.Mahesh himself has had run-ins galore with the board. A filmmaker like Shakti Samanta, who once headed the CBFC, had told him to reshoot and change the sexuality of the hijra (transvestite), one of the main characters of Sadak (1991). Mahesh had stuck to his guns. During Zakhm, the last film he directed in 1998 before opting for premature retirement, the minister of state in the I&B ministry had advised him to change the orange colour to black in the climactic protest scene, in an era when computer graphics were not within easy reach of a filmmaker. "Whatever little money we had, we spent it on changing the colour to release the film," recalled Mahesh. And when the same government gave Zakhm a National Award, he typically refused to go to Delhi to receive it. "Pooja went, I didn't," he said. One would think it was the temptation of directing Alia for the first time together with older daughter, Pooja, that brought Mahesh out of retirement two decades after Zakhm. "It was Sanjay Dutt," he disclosed. The two have a very special relationship. When Mahesh narrated a story to him, Sanju was so charged about the emotionally stirring content that he sprang up and wondered, "But who will direct it?" Mahesh had shrugged that he'd get somebody to do the job. "I'll be around to oversee it," he told Sanju, not entirely convinced that anybody else would be able to touch that raw nerve which is a Mahesh Bhatt speciality. "People today don't know how to get emotions out of a story," he lamented. Mahesh's decision to direct Sadak 2 and step back into the space he had voluntarily vacated in 1998 was thus because of Sanjay Dutt."Now that Sanju has become a father on screen (in Kalank too he is the father of a grown-up, married son), it will be interesting to watch him. His two years in prison haven't been juiced out of him so far," mulled Mahesh, who's all set to start filming the sequel to Sadak with Sanju, Pooja, Alia and Gulshan Grover.Apart from being armed with a potent script, Mahesh is also looking fit at 71. He actually goes to the gym and does pilates. It was wife Soni who told him, "You're such an independent man but as you grow older, the body becomes dependent on others. Do something about it." So he who had never exercised or lifted a dumbbell in his life, stepped into the gym. "And I love it."In his cabin is an old B&W photograph. A working still from a film with Amjad Khan's father Jayant, Mahesh's mother Shireen, and his father Nanabhai, who was a sound engineer in 1938 when movies moved from silent to talkie. The stories around Mahesh Bhatt have always been fascinating. Gender roles can alter brain cells
'We are just starting to understand and study the ways in which gender identity, rather than sex, may cause the brain to differ in males and females,' Forger added. These behaviours and expectations around gender identity can be seen in "epigenetic marks" in the brain, which drives biological functions and features as diverse as memory, development and disease susceptibility. Forger explained that epigenetic marks help determine which genes are expressed and are sometimes passed on from cell to cell as they divide. They also can be passed down from one generation to the next, she said. 'While we are accustomed to thinking about differences between the brains of males and females, we are much less used to thinking about the biological implications of gender identity. There is now sufficient evidence to suggest that an epigenetic imprint for gender is a logical conclusion. It would be strange if this were not the case because all environmental influences of any importance can epigenetically change the brain,' Forger said. In one example involving rats, the Georgia State authors cited a study by University of Wisconsin researchers who gave female rat pups extra attention designed to simulate the increased licking that mother rats normally perform on their male offspring. That treatment led to detectible changes in the brains of the female rats that received extra stimulation as compared to those who got the normal level of attention for female pups. Among the studies involving humans, researchers considered the example of Chinese society during the Great Chinese Famine from 1959-1961, when many families preferred to spend their limited resources on boys, leading to higher rates of disability and illiteracy among female survivors in adulthood. This demonstrates, they said, that early life stress can be a gendered experience as it changes the neural epigenome. ... Rajasthan HC stays allotment of 10k petrol pumps; issues notices to centre, state govt, oil companies
Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum and Indian Oil Corporation were issued notices along with the Centre and the state government. The companies had issued a notification in newspapers on December 14 last year seeking applications for setting up 10,000 new petrol pumps across the state. The last date for the application was Saturday. Petitioner's counsel Kuldeep Mathur said the process of allotting new pumps required an assessment of the existing ones by the petroleum board. 'The notification for new petrol pumps was rolled out without any such assessment which was illegal,' he claimed. The petition also contended the allotment of such a large number of new outlets in one go was not need-based but a politically motivated step. The petitioner said allotment of so many new petrol pumps will not only affect the revenue of the existing ones but will also affect the environment. India suspends cross-LoC trade with Pakistan
It said the action was taken on the basis of reports that the trade routes were being "misused by the Pakistan-based elements for funnelling illegal weapons, narcotics and fake currency, among others." The LoC trade, at present, is conducted through two trade facilitation centres located at Salamabad in Uri of Baramulla district, and Chakkan-da-Bagh in Poonch district. This trade takes place four days a week and is based on barter system and zero-duty. The measure has been taken in the backdrop of the Pulwama terror attack following which India stepped up its military and strategic offensive against Pakistan and also withdrew the most favoured nation (MFN) from its neighbour. "Meanwhile, a stricter regulatory and enforcement mechanism is being worked out and will be put in place in consultation with various agencies. The issue of reopening of LoC trade will be revisited thereafter," the government said in the statement. Heavy pot smokers may need higher dosage for sedation
For the study, the researchers in Colorado examined the medical records of 250 patients who received endoscopic procedures after 2012, when the state legalised recreational cannabis. Patients who smoked or ingested cannabis on a daily or weekly basis required 14 per cent more fentanyl, 20 per cent more midazolam, and 220 per cent more propofol to achieve optimum sedation for routine procedures, including colonoscopy, showed the findings published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association. 'Cannabis has some metabolic effects we don't understand and patients need to know that their cannabis use might make other medications less effective. We're seeing some problematic trends anecdotally, and there is virtually no formal data to provide a sense of scale or suggest any evidence-based protocols,' Twardowski said. Cannabis use in the United States increased 43 per cent between 2007 and 2015. An estimated 13.5 per cent of the adult population used cannabis during this period, with the greatest increase recorded among people 26 and older, according to the study. BJP misusing Central agencies in the face of an imminent poll rout: AICC general secretary K C Venugopal
At Chitradurga, a large box was unloaded from the Prime Minister's flight on to a car. Though the Election Commission was approached, no action was taken. The SPG did not give permission to check the Prime Minister's chopper. Venugopal said this episode has given rise to the suspicion that Modi and other ministers were carrying a large amount of cash with them to buy votes. "Modi is indulging in blatant violation of law. It is the duty of the Election Commission to provide justice for all," Venugopal added. Stating that the BJP was the prime enemy of the Congress, the AICC leader said the party was facing the election with the aim of defeating it. It is for the CPM to openly declare who its prime enemy is, he said. Training his guns at Modi and Amit Shah, Venugopal said the duo did not have any moral right to seek votes from Kerala after likening Wayanad to Pakistan. He said Rahul Gandhi returned from Wayanad after winning the hearts of the people there. Jalandhar cash recovery case: 'Informer' may have been holed up in a cop's home before his arrest
Members of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case, however, remain tight-lipped on the matter. Sources further said that Surinder had also told police that he and the other two main accused — assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) Joginder Singh and Rajpreet Singh — had absconded a week after the raid, after eyewitnesses recognised them during an identification parade at Phillaur on April 6. Police, however, are yet to reveal any details on the whereabouts of the allegedly missing cash. Surinder is said to be the informer who had alerted police of the priest and a few others allegedly being in possession of hawala money. He was booked under section 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 34 (common intention) of IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act at police station of state Crime Branch in Mohali district on April 12. The two ASIs are still at large. 'The three had been called by SIT head, IG Crime PK Sinha, to Khanna for recording their statements. They were also called to Phillaur on April 6 where some of the eyewitnesses including staff of the South Indian Bank Jalandhar was present,' said a senior police officer, adding that the eyewitnesses had recognised them. Sources said the three had been in touch with each other after absconding. 'Eyewitnesses told the SIT that a team took Father Madassary and a huge amount of the cash lying on the first floor, while another team came after a few minutes and went to the first floor where bank staff were counting money. And this, a team of three men had forcibly taken the entire amount, which was over Rs 6 crore from the bank staff without making an inventory,' said a senior officer. Sources said SIT head Sinha, who visited the priest's house on April 7 to record statements, had told the IG the same thing. Surinder's father Gurnam Singh met his son at Mohali on Thursday. 'My son told me that the money was with the two ASIs and he had just accompanied them to the house of Father Anthony on the day of the raid,' he said. While police have claimed that Surinder was arrested from Samrala on April 16, sources said that he had spent some days at the residence of a Khanna police officer, and after information about the same got out, it was made to look like he had been arrested from Samrala. Priest Anthony Madassery had filed a complaint about misappropriation of funds to the tune of Rs 6.65 crore by Khanna Police, which had claimed recovery of Rs 9.66 crore worth hawala money from him and five others on March 29. Two days later, the priest had in a press conference accused police of misappropriation. An SIT formed to probe the case has yet to ascertain the exact amount the missing cash. Kodela Siva Prasada Rao known for poll-related violence: YSRC
The violence on the polling day (April 11) was perpetrated and provoked by him as he went inside the polling booth and stay put for hours there increasing tension among the voters waiting outside to cast their vote. When the doors opened, he had staged a drama with his shirt torn and the people could not understand why he had shut himself in the polling booth for so long, Mr Ramachandraiah said. 'When he was Speaker of the State Assembly, he had degraded the institution by behaving like a TD worker and gagged the voice of the Opposition leaders and members, in case of suspension of MLA R.K. Roja. He did not act wisely when 23 MLAs defected and they were no disqualification. His comments that YSRC candidate Ambati Rambabu is not equal to his stature are derogatory and in fact, he was shunted out of his native Narsaraopet constituency. In 2014, he won by a very narrow margin,' he said. On the transport of huge quantity of gold of TTD, seized in Tamil Nadu, he said the CM should speak out on the issue. ... egally, both are probably in the wrong - Benedict for driving without due attention or even the more serious offence of dangerous driving, and Lawrence for launching an assault. The affair ended reasonably amicably with the men exchanging telephone numbers, but Lawrence, who was injured in the collision, is now said to be considering a compensation claim for £20,000. He appeared more upset that he had not heard from Cumberbatch since the accident.Hampshire Police confirmed the collision had been reported."No complaints were made, no criminal offences were investigated and the matter is being dealt with through insurance," said a spokesperson. When approached by The Sun newspaper, which broke the story, Lawrence, who is being advised by lawyers, declined to comment: "I'm sorry but I can't talk about it."However, one of his friends has been more than willing to supply details, perhaps after having his palms crossed with silver. He said: "Scooby was on his brand new bike when the car appeared out of nowhere. There was literally nowhere else in the road to go."He just put his arm over him and took the full force of the impact on his forearm, which smashed the wing mirror. It totally ruptured his arm. There was blood everywhere. Scooby is no shrinking violet and he bloody hurt him by the sounds of it."Cumberbatch is said to have climbed out shouting: "You were in the middle of the road!"Angered by his reaction, "Scooby dusted himself off and, full of adrenaline, reacted as he knows best - by slapping him. Graham Reid appointed as India's men's hockey team coach
According to a Hockey India official, Reid is expected to draw a salary of USD 15,000 per month and will be shifting base to Bengaluru with his family. 'Reid's tenure will be till the end of next year. As per industry standards, every international coach's contract is supposed to be for an Olympic cycle. 'But his contract will have a provision of extension till 2022. Everything will depend on India's performances leading upto the Tokyo Olympics,' the official told PTI. The official also said that Reid will soon join the ongoing national camp at Sports Authority of India South Centre in Bengaluru, which began Monday. The Indian chief coach's position has been lying vacant after the unceremonious sacking of Harendra Singh in January following a less-than-impressive quarterfinal exit at the World Cup in Bhubaneswar last year. Reid had a decorated playing career for the Australian national team and was part of the silver medal winning team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He was also part of the Australian squad that won back-to-back Champions Trophy titles in 1984, 1985 and 1989, 1990. With 130 international caps, Reid took to coaching when he was appointed Australia's assistant coach in 2009. He was later elevated to the head coach's position and he guided the Australian team to their fifth consecutive Champions Trophy title in 2012. Reid was named head coach in 2014 where he contributed to Australian squad's reign as world No.1 team. Under his guidance, Australia won the HWL Semi-Final in Antwerp and went on to win the HWL Final in Raipur the same year. A member of the Queensland Hockey Hall of Fame, Reid moved to the Netherlands in 2017 to serve as the head coach of Amsterdam Club, which he was part of as a player in 1993 and 1994. In his recent stint, he worked as the assistant coach for the Netherlands team, who won the silver medal at the 2018 men's World Cup. Expressing his delight over taking on a new assignment, Reid said:'It's an honour and a privilege to be appointed as chief coach of the Indian men's hockey team. No other country has a history in this sport that can compare to India. 'As an opposition coach, I have enjoyed watching first hand, the steady rise of the Indian team to one of the most exciting and threatening teams in world hockey. I have a passion for the fast and attacking brand of hockey that India plays which marries closely with the Australian style. 'I am looking forward to working with Hockey India, SAI, MYAS, team Support Staff and players with the continuation of positive development of the team in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympics. My wife will also be moving to India in August and we are very happy to be making a home in Bengaluru,' he added. Hockey India president Mohd Mushtaque Ahmad added: 'Graham Reid is backed by a successful career as a player and also comes with strong coaching experience, having worked with the Australian and the Netherlands national teams. 'We are hopeful his experience and expertise will help the Indian men's hockey team achieve desirable results leading up to and at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.' TD leaders promised to contribute towards the project but did not so far.
'We abandoned the temple project but will build a community hall in over 40 cents of land (2,000 square yards) at Transgender Colony near Abandam Thanda in Nandyal,' Kumar said. Perhaps for the first time in the history of AP, foundation stone was laid in April 2018 for the temple dedicated to AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in Nandyal. The Samantha Hijras Hakkula Aikya Porata Vedika in Nandyal town took up the task of building a temple dedicated to N. Chandrababu Naidu and thought of installing a silver statue. The project cost was pegged at Rs 30 lakh. P. Vijaya Kumar said that the Kurnool Rajya Sabha MP assured that he would sanction the Rs 30 lakh from MPLADS and we are still considering it. 'Based on the poor response to the temple project to Naidu, we have decided to convert it into a community hall,' she said. Meanwhile, in the recently concluded elections, though the district has more than 25,000 Gay, LGBT and Hijras population, only 533 members were registered as transgender voters, of whom, only 91 came to cast their vote. Vijaya Kumar said that although the district ranks No. 1 in transgender population, government officials were lax in granting transgender certificates. The Kurnool General Hospital had constituted a board to examine the status of a person and issue a certificate based on biological, physiological, behavioural and general conduct of the applicant seeking to be a transgender. Vijaya Kumar alleged that the medical board plays 'fraud' on the community and were issuing certificates on considerations than on merit. When contacted, the superintendent of Kurnool Government General Hospital said that a medical board comprising a urologist, endocrinologist, and a psychiatrist was formed to assess the suitability of candidates to be declared as transgenders. ... Durga Puja 2019 Date: When is Durga Puja in 2019
his year, the festival will be celebrated from October 4 to October 8, followed by the grand immersion of the idol. This festival is celebrated for a duration of 10 days, running parallel with Navratri. According to legend, the festival signifies the birth of Durga with the blessings of the gods, as collective energy, to fight the demon king Mahishasura, who was blessed with immortality and could not be killed by any god or man, which is why a goddess had to accomplish the feat. According to folklore, Durga would take a different form each of the days to fight the demon, and finally, on the tenth (Dashami), or last day, of Durga Puja, she would kill him, and everyone would bid her farewell. Starting from the sixth day of the Navratri to the ninth, huge pandals are opened for the public, as a congregation space for anyone to come and take part in the celebration. It is believed that Durga - the goddess of supreme power - starts her journey to earth on this Shasthi (sixth day). The colourful idols of the goddess are unveiled on this day and Lakshmi and Saraswati are revered on the following days. On Maha Asthami, nine pots with nine different forms of goddess Durga are worshipped. Kumari Puja, that involves worshipping unmarried young girls, are also observed in different parts of India. In this, feet of young girls are washed and later Alata (a red paint), is applied to them before the Puja starts. At the end of the rituals, they are fed food and sweets. In the evening, Sandhi Puja is done. Navami marks the end of rituals and prayers. On the tenth day - Vijaya Dashami, the goddess returns to her home and the idols are taken for immersion Huge idols are handicraft and pandals are set up where people come and offer their prayers. Elaborate stage decorations, food stalls, dance performances and games mark the festivity. Here's why Vidya Balan refused Jayalalithaa biopic
I simply refused to do it because I had already committed to doing the biopic of the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, which will begin soon,' says the actress and adds, 'I always wished to play Indira Gandhi but somehow the projects that were to go on the celluloid did not happen and now the biopic of the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is all set to be made into a web series. Thus, I did not wish to do another biopic. At that moment, I felt that doing one biopic was enough.' Just to refresh the memories of the readers, Vidya was considered 'jinxed' in her early days. She was also dropped from her first south film without any information. 'Yes, I was informed about me having been dropped (from the film) by my hair stylist,' Vidya had confirmed to us earlier. But after her films in the Hindi film industry saw success, the directors from the film industries in the South, who had once refused to work with her stating that she is 'ugly' and 'jinxed', are now approaching her. Sourav Ganguly's defence: CAC is defunct, so conflict of interest clause is irrelevant
This follows the allegation made by three Kolkata-based individuals - Ranjit Kr. Seal, Abhishek Mukherjee and Bhaswati Santua - that Ganguly is in a potentially conflicted position for his dual role as the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president and the IPL franchise Delhi Capitals advisor. Ganguly has already filed his written response to Justice Jain. A BCCI note sent through chief executive Rahul Johri to the ombudsman reportedly stated that Ganguly's dual role as the CAC member and Capitals advisor, too, needs to be examined. The CAC comprising Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, however, is defunct for the last two years, as it last met in 2017, when Ravi Shastri was appointed as the head coach of the Indian team. In December last year, the Committee of Administrators (CoA) headed by Vinod Rai had formed an ad-hoc committee comprising Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy to pick the head coach for the Indian women's cricket team after the CAC members had recused themselves. Ganguly is tight-lipped on the issue, but according to a former BCCI legal counsel, when a committee is defunct, then there can be no conflict of interest. Also, as he pointed out, if the CAC is still active, then both Tendulkar and Laxman come 'under the same purview', as they have mentorial roles in Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively. Item No. 5 of the Article 38. (1) in the new BCCI constitution deals with the 'position of influence'. As per 38. (1) (v), a conflict of interest can happen: 'When the individual occupies a post that calls for decisions of governance, management or selection to be made, and where a friend, relative or close affiliate is in the zone of consideration or subject to such decision-making, control or management. 'Also, when the individual holds any stake, voting rights or power to influence the decisions of a franchise/club/team that participates in the commercial league(s) under BCCI'… Citing this, the ex-BCCI counsel said captains of the IPL franchises, too, in that case can be in potentially conflicted position, if they are part of the national team or team management. 'Before the Lodha reforms, the BCCI used to keep the central contracts of the contracted players in abeyance during the IPL months. This was to allow the players the liberty to play the IPL without any potential conflict (if at all it applied). The principle for any conflict is the likelihood of bias. If there's no likelihood of bias, then you shouldn't be bothered,' he told this paper. Trump vetoes measure to end US involvement in Yemen war
ongress has grown uneasy with Trump's close relationship with Saudi Arabia as he tries to further isolate Iran, a regional rival. Many lawmakers also criticized the president for not condemning Saudi Arabia for the killing of Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi who lived in the United States and had written critically about the kingdom. Khashoggi went into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last October and never came out. Intelligence agencies said Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was complicit in the killing. The US provides billions of dollars of arms to the Saudi-led coalition fighting against Iran-backed rebels in Yemen. Members of Congress have expressed concern about the thousands of civilians killed in coalition airstrikes since the conflict began in 2014. The fighting in the Arab world's poorest country also has left millions suffering from food and medical care shortages and has pushed the country to the brink of famine.Trump said the measure was unnecessary because except for counterterrorism operations against Islamic State militants and al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, the United States is not engaged in hostilities in or affecting Yemen. He said there were no US military personnel in Yemen accompanying the Saudi-led coalition fighting Iran-backed Houthis, although he acknowledged that the US has provided limited support to the coalition, including intelligence sharing, logistics support, and - until recently - in-flight refueling of non-US aircraft. The president also said that the measure would harm bilateral relations and interferes with his constitutional power as commander in chief. He said the US is providing the support to protect the safety of more than 80,000 Americans who live in certain areas of the coalition countries subject to Houthi attacks from Yemen."Houthis, supported by Iran, have used missiles, armed drones and explosive boats to attack civilian and military targets in those coalition countries, including areas frequented by American citizens, such as the airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia," Trump said. "In addition, the conflict in Yemen represents a 'cheap' and inexpensive way for Iran to cause trouble for the United States and for our ally, Saudi Arabia."House approval of the resolution came earlier this month on a 247-175 vote. The Senate vote last month was 54-46.House Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a statement Tuesday night saying: "The conflict in Yemen is a horrific humanitarian crisis that challenges the conscience of the entire world. Yet the President has cynically chosen to contravene a bipartisan, bicameral vote of the Congress and perpetuate America's shameful involvement in this heartbreaking crisis."Pelosi added: "This conflict must end, now. The House of Representatives calls on the President to put peace before politics, and work with us to advance an enduring solution to end this crisis and save lives."Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., said Trump's veto "shows the world he is determined to keep aiding a Saudi-backed war that has killed thousands of civilians and pushed millions more to the brink of starvation."Kaine accused Trump of turning a blind eye to Khashoggi's killing and the jailing of women's rights activists in Saudi Arabia."I hope my colleagues will show we won't tolerate the Trump administration's deference to Saudi Arabia at the expense of American security interests by voting to override this veto," Kaine said. The top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas, acknowledged the dire situation in Yemen for civilians, but spoke out in opposition to the measure when it was passed. McCaul said it was an abuse of the War Powers Resolution and predicted it could disrupt US security cooperation agreements with more than 100 countries.David Miliband, President of the International Rescue Committee, a humanitarian aid group, said: "This veto by President Trump is morally wrong and strategically wrongheaded. It sets back the hopes for respite for the Yemeni people, and leaves the US upholding a failed strategy."Trump issued his first veto last month on legislation related to immigration. Trump had declared a national emergency so he could use more money to construct a border wall. Congress voted to block the emergency declaration and Trump vetoed that measure. Pinterest valued at USD 12.7 billion in IPO, sign of tech demand after Lyft struggles
A key difference between Pinterest and Lyft, however, were their valuation expectations. Lyft, which lost USD 911 million last year, was seeking a valuation of up to USD 24.3 billion in its IPO, higher than the USD 15 billion valuation it attained in its latest private fundraising round in 2018. Pinterest lost USD 63 million in 2018. Pinterest's initial USD 15-USD 17 per share target range had set it on course to be valued below its last private fundraising valuation of USD 12.3 billion in 2017. At USD 19 per share, Pinterest, which offers advertisers a venue to sell to consumers, raised around USD 1.4 billion at a roughly USD 12.7 billion valuation. The fact that Pinterest attained a higher valuation in the IPO will be a relief to an investor who participated in prior fundraising rounds and gives some vindication to the company ahead of its public market debut on April 18. Pinterest is also the most high-profile listing of a US social media company since Snap Inc in 2017. Snap's stock also priced well in its IPO but is now down more than 30 per cent below its IPO price. Other IPOs this year, such as cloud computing company PagerDuty Inc and jeans maker Levi Strauss & Co have also traded above their IPO prices since going public. Investors in IPOs typically expect new companies to outperform the broader market. Renaissance Capital's IPO exchange-traded fund is up 30 per cent so far in 2019, compared with a 15.7 per cent rise in the benchmark S&P 500 Index. IPOs of Pinterest and other such loss-making unicorns — startup companies with valuations of at least USD 1 billion — has presented a predicament for investors sitting on the fence. They do not want to miss out on popular companies with fast growth, but at the same time have to weigh the risks of businesses with unproven economics. Pinterest will trade under the symbol 'PINS'. Goldman Sachs & Co LLC, JPMorgan and Allen & Company are the lead underwriters on the Pinterest ... Gangs of Madras movie review: A poor man's Kill Bill meets torture porn
Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai movie review: A pointless, witless remake The plot revolves around Ibrahim (Ashok Kumar) and Rasia (Priyanka) who meet in college, fall in love and get married. Fresh out of college, Ibrahim lands a job to handle the accounts of Rawther (Velu Prabhakaran), one of the city's most-wanted gangsters. Everything is going well for Ibrahim and Rasia, who are madly in love and dream of living a life filled with promise. But life takes a detour when Ibrahim is killed in a shootout, and Rasia learns through a close friend that he was killed for a reason. The incident leaves Rasia filled with vengeance and whether or not she takes revenge on all those responsible for her husband's death forms the crux of the story. For a story about gangsters and shootouts, Gangs of Madras never succeeds in creating the right mood to get us invested. Unlike most gangster films, the fact that this tale of revenge is headlined by a woman makes it interesting but not stand-out, and this is precisely why the film falls flat even before it can take off. Priyanka gives it all to her character and she is really convincing as the woman who is consumed by vengeance, and won't stop at anything till she makes those pay for her husband's death. Unfortunately, the writing is a big a let-down and no other character other than Rasia is fully developed. Gangs of Madras stars Priyanka Ruth in the lead role. For instance, Rawther is introduced as the most-dreaded gangster but there's no back story to his rise and how he built his empire. Everything is so conveniently written, we're forced to believe whatever gets showcased on screen. After her husband's death, Rasia leaves to Mumbai where she takes someone's help to get herself trained. The training process lasts a song and upon her return to Chennai, she goes on a killing spree. Is it really so easy to lay a finger on ruthless gangster? Rasia kills two policemen in cold blood in public and there's no investigation into the killings. The film is graphically violent. After a point, the violence turns into torture and it's excruciatingly painful to watch. Kumar's influence of Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill is evident through the lead character Rasia, but she's no Uma Thurman. Gangs of Madras can be best described as a poor man's Kill Bill that meets torture porn. Modicare ropes in just 1 per cent of private hospitals
The total number of private hospitals and nursing homes in the country would be closer to five lakh. The empanelled ones would be around one per cent of the total number of hospitals and nursing homes,' said Ashwajit Singh, Managing Director, IPE Global. According to Dr. Mohit Saxena, Principal Consultant, Transformational Health (Healthcare) Practice, Frost & Sullivan, participation of the private healthcare sector is critical for the successful implementation of the scheme as almost 80 per cent of the operational healthcare infrastructure is with the private sector. Healthcare services of most government hospitals have always been free for poor patients and the scheme does not provide any additional benefit. In order to provide better facilities under the scheme, the government will have to bring in private hospitals into the fold, find experts. 'The number of private hospitals should go up at least by eight to 10 times,' said Singh. 'The private hospitals that have empanelled for the scheme are those which always have some vacant beds. Private hospital chains with high occupancy levels are still hesitant to be a part of the scheme and the main issue is treatment rates. The hospitals were not comfortable even with the CGHS rates,' he added. According to Saxena, the Ayushman Bharat treatment and procedure rates are 10 to 15 per cent less than CGHS rates. Though the hospitals can charge 10 per cent to 30 per cent premium on this under certain conditions, many hospitals are unable to fulfil all the criteria. The pricing policy is currently in a state of flux and the hospitals anticipate the rates to at least increase to the CGHS rates. Hospitals are also finding the process of empanelling a bit tedious. Of the hospitals, which have got empanelled, majority are in the metros and tier-I cities. 'The scheme will only be successful, if it reaches out to the patients in smaller cities, towns and rural areas,' he said. ... However in March, the price of HUL's Bru Gold jar 100 gm has gone up by 8 per cent from Rs 245 to Rs 265, as per the data from Kotak Institutional Equities. 'We take pricing decisions from time to time by optimizing all our levers. As a policy, we do not comment on specific pricing decisions," said HUL spokesperson. Meanwhile, café chains too have opted to stay put with the prices. 'Café chains usually do not revise the prices downward with the commodity trend. A decline in the commodity prices, usually flow into their margins. If at all they want to pass on the benefits, they would offer limited period offers or discounts. FMCG companies generally pass on the commodity price benefit, but they wait till prices stabilise,' said Kaustubh Pawaskar, Senior Research Analyst, Sharekhan. When asked about the commodity price decline, Coffee Day Enterprises, which runs Café Coffee Day declined to comment, as it is a silent period for the listed entity. 'At Tata Starbucks, pricing is continually evaluated on a product-by-product basis in our stores to balance business needs while continuing to provide value to our customers. There are many factors that contribute to pricing decisions, including various operating and occupancy expenses (i.e. rent, labour, competition, distribution, marketing, furniture and commodities - including coffee - but also other commodities associated with beverages, foods, materials and operations). We are continuously looking for opportunities to provide meaningful value to our customers through benefits such as the My Starbucks Rewards program, special in-store promotions and competitive pricing and believe that our approach to value properly balances the experience we provide customers with our need to effectively run our business,' said Starbucks spokesperson. ... Treatment of rare diseases needs strong government support
Even though its step was unconscionable, the ministry was right when it said that the policy was flawed. It has now said that a new draft policy will be notified after nine months. But before that, significant time must be devoted to understanding and outlining a definition for rare diseases, which was missing in the previous document. In the European Union, for instance, a disease that affects fewer than five in 10,000 people is considered rare. In fact, the biggest hurdle to formulating a policy on such diseases is lack of awareness. It is ignorance that led the ministry to assign the corpus creation to the National Health Mission, which is in charge of primary and secondary healthcare. It was unaware that rare diseases fall under tertiary healthcare, requiring specialists in large hospitals. The other obstacle is India's paltry health budget - two per cent of the gross domestic product - which is insufficient for providing even basic healthcare. Moreover, a significant portion of the budget is dedicated to the much-touted Ayushman Bharat scheme that is of no use to people with rare diseases, which are usually genetic and, as such, outside the ambit of insurance. Meagre funds make spending on rare diseases a utilitarian calculation - the scrapped policy allocated funds to treat a few select rare diseases, excluding untreatable ones altogether. Not only does this make healthcare a numbers game, it is also a violation of the right to life guaranteed by the Constitution. The latest policy should thus apportion substantial resources to research aimed at finding new and cheap treatments. A look at policies from other countries will show that besides providing cost-effective treatment, attention is also paid to in-vitro and newborn screening for early detection of rare diseases. Low incidence means rare diseases are seen as "unprofitable" and businesses are reluctant to invest in them. This neglect can only be overcome by strong support from the government, which has a duty to treat all its citizens equally. When history is a weapon
he chapter on clothing ("Clothing: A Social History") in the section titled "Caste Conflict and Dress Change" describes how lower-caste women in Travancore were attacked by upper caste Nair men for defying the dictum of not covering their upper bodies before the dominant castes. The chapter on sports ("History and Sport: The Story of Cricket") illustrates how caste and gender identities of players determined the politics of this Victorian sport in colonial India. The chapter on peasants and workers ("Peasants and Farmers") deals with the history of British colonialism in India which thrived on a capitalistic market economy that was dependant on routine extraction and oppression of the working class.Although at a passing glance, these choices can be seen as arbitrary, a deeper probing reveals the larger thematic link among them. These three chapters narrate instances of power inequalities and identity hierarchies, of caste, class, and gender - even though they were often invisible - shaping lived realities. For example, the chapter on clothing encouraged students to realize that their choices in clothes are not arbitrary; they are shaped by their economic and social positions. In general, these chapters were aimed at teaching students to unlearn by making them aware of larger forms of power, both ideological and material, that determine their life-worlds.This particular instance of omission needs to be placed at the intersection of two trends in Indian politics over the last few years in order to understand its larger ramifications and seriousness. On the one hand, there is the attempt made by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party to rewrite the 'history' of the nation for which it appointed a 14-member committee comprising bureaucrats and academics in March 2018. On the other hand, there is the longer history of NCERT's 'autonomous' nature being threatened by the Centre from 2015 onwards. Consequently, there have been repeated instances of textbook reform - replacing 'anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat' with 'Gujarat riots' being just one example. The association of history with the idea of a singular truth has been criticized by generations of historians. Yet, it remains the bridge over the gulf that separates history from politics in India. During the early decades of the 20th century, when anti-colonial resistance was at its zenith, history emerged as one of the primary spaces for constructing a national identity. Hence it set an example for political ideologues, inspiring them to seek validation from history. The authoritative potential of history is realized when it is propagated to the larger population as 'truth' through school textbooks. In 1961, the NCERT was set up as an autonomous advisory board to prevent this instrumentalization and retain the spirit of democracy by encouraging young learners to think independently. Seventy-two years after Independence, as a Hindu nationalist party seeks to fortify its ideology and create a lasting influence, it is only natural that it would turn towards history. The instances of history textbook reform are not unique to India. Under authoritarian regimes, school-level history is often purged of episodes of violence, atrocities and other forms of oppression perpetrated by the State to create a facade of harmony and unity. Not only do these narratives obliterate the ugly manifestations of inequality between the oppressor and the oppressed, they also transform oppressed groups into subalterns, delegating them to the margins of history. In Japan, the mass carnage committed by Japanese troops during the Nanking Massacre as well as the atrocities perpetrated by the Japanese State during the Second World War have not been mentioned in its school textbooks. The rewriting and reform of textbooks would affect future generations of learners since the pedagogical routes for unlearning would gradually become endangered. In these troubled times, one is reminded of Satyajit Ray's dystopian political satire, Hirak Rajar Deshe, which succinctly summarized the graveness of the present situation through the words of the tyrant king who orders the village school to be shut down and justifies it by saying: "The more they learn, the more they know, the less they obey..." Sunil Gavaskar picks India's possible number four for World Cup 2019
Ambati Rayudu was spoken about when the season started but has lost form sharply and someone like KL Rahul could be chosen for no.4,' Gavaskar told India Today. KKR vs DC: Colin Ingram's match-winning six denies Shikhar Dhawan maiden IPL ton, Twitter erupts The batting legend added that it's not much of a problem for an opener to move down the order. 'He has played at number 4 in the past. But for some reason he was confused in the past year and a half or so. But we have seen him bat with a lot of focus and concentration in the IPL. And I don't think it's so much a problem for an opener to switch to middle order as opposed to a middle order player to bat in the opening position,' said Gavaskar. KL Rahul, who had a dismal season in international cricket after the 2018 IPL, has come back strongly in IPL 2019. He is currently the second highest scorer in the tournament with 317 runs in seven matches at an average of 79.25. Amazon: Woody Allen's #MeToo comments wrecked movie deal
The hearing was related to a lawsuit Allen filed in February seeking at least $68 million in damages. The lawsuit said Amazon ended his 2017 contract in June without ever releasing a completed film, A Rainy Day in New York. Allen was not in court. John Quinn, his lawyer, told the judge that Seattle-based Amazon initially claimed it was ending the deal because of allegations made against Allen, not because of his recent statements. 'The baseless allegations against Mr. Allen are decades old,' Quinn said. He added that the claims were well known when Amazon signed its deal with Allen in August 2017. Allen's adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, said in 1992 that Allen molested her in an attic when she was 7. Allen has repeatedly denied it. In 2014, Farrow wrote about the allegations and then appeared in an interview early last year for the first time. Quinn said Amazon has since changed its explanation for terminating the contract to blaming Allen for making statements saying that the #MeToo movement should not become a witch hunt. The lawyer said the company had also cited claims that people in the industry won't work with Allen. Regardless, Quinn said, Allen planned to produce a new movie this summer. In court papers, Amazon noted that Allen's son, Ronan Farrow, published an article in The New Yorker just weeks after the company signed its contract with Allen. The article detailed reports of sexual misconduct against movie producer Harvey Weinstein. Weinstein has denied non-consensual sexual conduct occurred. 'The article became the catalyst for a broad reckoning over the persistence of sexual harassment in entertainment and other industries,' Amazon's lawyers wrote. They said Allen then made a series of public comments 'suggesting that he failed to grasp the gravity of the issues or the implications for his own career.' They cited several quotes by Allen in a magazine article including: 'You don't want it to lead to a witch-hunt atmosphere, a Salem atmosphere, where every guy in an office who winks at a woman is suddenly having to call a lawyer to defend himself.' They also noted that after Dylan Farrow recounted her memories of sexual abuse in January 2018, Allen publicly dismissed the statements in a newspaper article as 'cynically using' #MeToo for attention. Klieger told the judge Allen's public comments resulted in controversy 'in Hollywood and outside of Hollywood.' The effect of the comments mean the pictures can no longer be made or promoted, Klieger said. After hearing both lawyers, the judge set a case schedule stretching into next year. Allen and possibly Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, among others, were likely to provide depositions unless the case is resolved through private mediation in coming weeks. Jennifer Lopez finally responds to Alex cheating rumours
Traffic congestion can tarnish the name of Bengaluru
However, the recent heavy traffic congestion restrains free intellectual activities, which can tarnish the name of 'Silicon Valley'. Thirty years ago when I was an evacuee from Rangoon, Bangkok was experiencing the worst traffic congestion in Asia. It took me two hours to commute from my hotel to the United Nations office by car, while it would have taken only 30 minutes had I chosen to walk instead. Now, Bangkok has a well-developed metro system and highway network. It seems like those old traffic congestion days are gone. On similar lines, Bengaluru can, of course, build highways and longer metro lines to reduce traffic congestion. The problem here, however, seems to be funds to execute these projects. The Karnataka government, as the capital of innovative thinking, is tackling this problem of mobilising funds on its own, by providing incentives to private sectors, in addition to pledges made by the foreign governments. The mobilisation of funds from the private sector cannot be scheduled while pledges made by foreign governments are scheduled. Hence, unless the Karnataka government can solve this incongruity, the prospect for the successful project implementation may not be as bright as the Bengaluru sunshine. SOLUTION: On the lines of Bangkok, the government can build highways and longer metro lines to reduce traffic congestion. The Karnataka government needs to solve the incongruity of funding from private sector and foreign governments for successful project implementation. Negligence in graft case probe: UP DGP recommends suspension of Barabanki SP
The recommendation is made to the state government and permission will be sought from the election commission before initiating the action. Yadav was booked in a graft case at Lucknow's Hazratganj police station and was arrested Tuesday. He was sent to Lucknow jail after being produced before a court in the state capital. Circle Officer, Crime branch, Lucknow, has been investigating the corruption case. DGP OP Singh told The Indian Express that he has recommended for suspension of the SP, Barabanki as prima facie he is responsible for lack of supervision and negligence as the sub-inspector took the bribery and he remained unaware. Chief Secretary Anoop Chandra Pandey said the government was yet to receive the recommendation for the suspension of the SP. When contacted, 2013-batch IPS officer and SP, Barabanki, Satish Kumar said, 'I have no information about recommendation for my suspension. I do not even know if any inquiry was conducted against me as no one came to record my statement.' Station House Officer, City Kotwali police station, Barabanki, Dharmendra Kumar Singh, informed, on January 8, one Sanwley Sharma filed a complaint with the SP, Satish Kumar alleging that some persons running a chit fund scheme in the district were likely to run away with a huge sum of the investors. SP handed over an inquiry into the allegations to cyber cell in-charge, Anoop Kumar. Satish Kumar said, 'I directed Anoop Kumar to lodge an FIR on the basis of the inquiry report and the legal opinion sought by the special prosecutor into the matter. However, he got the case lodged on the mere allegations of Sanwley's complaint only and the findings of the inquiry report was not included in the FIR, which weakened the charges against the accused.' The FIR was lodged on January 10 on charges including forgery and cheating by impersonation at City Kotwali police station, said Satish Kumar. The three directors of the company - Shankar Gayan, Dheeraj Srivastava and Prasanji Sardar - were arrested and sent to jail later, informed SP, adding police had also seized the bank accounts and offices of the company in Lucknow and Barabanki. All three accused are from West Bengal. After being released on bail in February, Shankar Gyan filed a complaint with DGP OP Singh alleging that Anoop Kumar allegedly took Rs 65 lakh promising him favour in the case, the SP said. Shankar Gyan also alleged that he was detained illegally for two days by Anoop Kumar. DGP OP Singh had directed Special Task Force (STF) to conduct an inquiry into the allegations. CBSE puts regular classes on creative learning curve
rincipals also felt that the new system would have a positive impact on the development of certain life skills in children such as communication, reflection and enquiry, higher confidence levels and appreciation for aesthetics and creativity. Paramita Saha, principal of the CBSE-affiliated Loyola Convent School of Booty in Ranchi, said CBSE schools already had arts subjects but restricted to Class VIII. "Including the arts, visual, music, dance and theatre, will definitely make the learning process more interesting for today's children and broaden their horizons. This is also because we are at a juncture when there is too much of academic pressure on students. This is a great step but I hope the board guides us on implementation," she said.Saha added two periods per week as suggested by the council would be more than necessary but schools would have to see how the system ultimately turns out to be.Jamshedpur Public School principal Namita Agarwal said this was a wonderful idea to boost creative thinking in teachers and students. "This will make studies more interesting than ever. Also teachers at times are very innovative but cannot implement their ideas in the teaching method. This can be wonderful for them. For us, it won't be a major problem but first we have to go through guidelines," said Agarwal. Students of Classes VI, VII and VIII will also have to learn culinary arts to help them value nutritious food, learn about crops and spices grown in India, processes of oil extraction from various kinds of seeds and their benefits and good agricultural practices. A parent, when told about the new CBSE directive, welcomed the move. "What could be better if children are taught in ways that they love? If they can paint or dance or sing as part of learning, I believe they will learn and retain more. I don't know how it will all finally pan out but it does sound exciting," said engineer J. Vinayak, whose son Om Prakash studies at DAV Public School, Bistupur. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Before Alia Bhatt-Varun Dhawan's Kalank, 5 epic dramas that made it to Bollywood's hall of fame
This is a tale high on emotions and set against turbulent times. However, this is not the first time such an attempt has been made. Before Kalank's release, here's a look at five iconic films that have gone down this path. Pakeezah Meena Kumari plays Sahibjaan. Set at the turn of last century (1890s-1900s) in the city of Lucknow, Pakeezah tells the story of a tawaaif (courtesan) who wants love and a family of her own. A simple desire, but given her situation in life, it is an uphill task as she has to fight prejudice, rejection and exploitation in the process. Pakeezah is replete with songs and dances. Sahibjaan (Meena Kumari), a beautiful courtesan falls in love with a forest ranger Salim Ahmed Khan (Raaj Kumar), reading his letter, when their paths crossed in a train. Later, they meet and fall in love for good. The only glitch being he is high born and she a courtesan. Salim's family objects to a dancing girl as a daughter-in-law while she is trying hard to vend off aggressive advances of a patron, Nawab Zafar Ali Khan. Matters turn from bad to worse and Sahibjaan finds herself performing mujra (dance) at the wedding of Salim. As events unfold, it comes to light that Sahibjaan is the illegitimate daughter of Salim's uncle Shahabuddin (Ashok Kumar). The film ends with a dying Shahabuddin asking Salim to marry his daughter. The film ends with Salim's baraat (groom's party) reaching a tawaaif's kothi (quarters), symbolic of changing times and mores. The pathos of Sahibjaan. The film's spectacular sets, its canvass, the family drama, conflicting emotions, the songs and dances were so magical, the film continues to enthral viewers more than 40 years of its release. Meena Kumari in a double role of Nargis and Sahibjaan was painfully perfect in the role, which was to be her swansong as well. The star cast too was stellar — Ashok Kumar, Raaj Kumar, Sapru, Kamal Kapoor apart from Meena Kumari gave the film its heft. Umrao Jaan Farooq Shaikh and Rekha in Umrao Jaan. Often regarded as a classic, Muzaffar Ali's Umrao Jaan as an achingly beautiful story of courtesan set during the turbulent years of 1857 in Lucknow. Starring Rekha in a career-defining role of a doomed courtesan, the story is based on a novel a 1905 Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada. A girl called Amiran from Faizabad (in Uttar Pradesh) gets kidnapped and sold to a madam at brothel, who teaches courtesans the art of captivating the rich and wealthy. As she blossoms into a young woman, now renamed as Umrao, she becomes skilful in dance and music and is the toast of Lucknow high society. What's more, Umrao is also a gifted poetess. One such a person is is Nawab Sultan who trips for her charms and so does she. However, their budding romance is nipped in the bud when Sultan declares that he has to marry a woman of his family's choice. Rekha as Umrao Jaan. As turbulence breaks out and Lucknow is caught in the middle of a revolt, Umrao gets infatuated with bandit chieftain Faiz Ali, with whom she elopes. Matters turn bad as he gets killed by the British forces and she finds herself at her childhood residence in Faizabad. Her mother is glad to see her though all others can't recognise her and ask her to perform. Wanting to unite with her family, Umrao is forced to leave as her brother doesn't want her around. She returns to Lucknow, only to find the brothel in shambles. The film was iconic on many scales — it is perhaps the first realistic drama, despite being cast in a commercial film format. Rekha's performance is superlative as she dives into the pathos, the loss, the confusion, the beauty, the aesthetics and the sophistication of Umrao Jaan. The film's scale is massive; the Lucknow high society of 1840s and the ravages of revolt give the film its timelessness. Headlined by Rekha, the films also features late Farooq Shaikh, Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, Dina Pathak, Satish Shah, Shaukat Kaifi, Prema Narayan and late Bharat Bhushan. Waqt The vintage drama, starring Balraj Sahni, Sunil Dutt, Raaj Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore, Sadhana and Achala Sachdev in prominent roles, is an epic family drama set against catastrophic times. Lala Kedarnath is a wealthy merchant who leads a happy and prosperous life with wife Laxmi (Achala) and three young sons — Raju, Ravi and Vijay. He is warned by an astrologer to be wary of fate and not be proud of his achievements, but Kedarnath couldn't care less. As fate would have it, on the night of his sons' birthday celebrations, disaster strikes and the town is hit by a deadly earthquake. In hours his life is shattered -- his two elder sons get lost and his wife, youngest son and he are left paupers. He is jailed for a crime, his eldest son becomes a thief, the second son is adopted by a wealthy family and his wife and youngest son are forced to live a life of penury. How the different strands of the story criss-cross, identities revealed and how romances culminate into marriages form the rest of the story. Devdas Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai in Devdas. Bengali novelist's epic family drama, set in the British era, has captivated cine goers and movie makers from time immemorial. No wonder the story has been made thrice in Hindi alone and 19 times in various Indian languages. A role, made famous by Dilip Kumar, the story revolves around a scion of an aristocratic Bengali family named Devdas who falls in love with a girl called Paro, of a lower strata than his. He loves her too but doesn't have the guts to stand up to his family's objection to Paro as a daughter-in-law, despite the fact that she has grown up in the household (the families are neighbours). Madhuri Dixit in Devdas. A bold Paro steps out of her house to meet him and asks him to marry her, something unheard of in those times, only to find a spineless lover in him. She accuses him of being a coward and decides to marry a much older but wealthy widower arranged by her family. A confused Devdas goes away to Calcutta, only to realise his mistake. He rushes back to confess his love but it is too late. Her marriage preparation is in full swing and can't be reversed. Dejected, he returns to Calcutta and into the arms of a large-hearted courtesan Chandramukhi, who falls of him knowing fully well that he doesn't love her. The film ends with the death of Devdas on the doorsteps of Paro's new home. The story is a staggering narration of its times -- 19th century India, complete with its prejudices and weaknesses and helplessness of its principle characters. While the Bimal Ray version starring Dilip, Suchitra Sen and Vyjayanthimala was modest in its presentation, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 2002 classic was a lavish drama with a huge canvass, massive set pieces and high drama. The film's star cast too was star heavy with Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Aishwarya Rai, Kirron Kher among others leading the charge. Sholay Sholay was written by Salim Javed and directed by Ramesh Sippy. No mention of films with epic scale is complete without mentioning 1975 classic Sholay. With an ensemble star including Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri and Ajmad Khan, Sholay was expected to be 'big deal' even by the 1970s standard. A story of an ex-cop and landlord (Thakur) avenging the death of his family members including a child at the hands of an infamous dacoit (Gabbar Singh), this was a classic good-versus-bad tale. But the manner in which it was mounted, its dialogues and its action, Sholay walked straight into the Hindi film industry's hall of fame. Amjad Khan (Gabbar Singh) in the Kalia scene. Thakur hires two local thugs (Jay and Veeru), sharp with guns and guile, to kill an infamous dacoit Gabbar Singh, whose men have kept villagers on tenterhooks, looting and plundering at will. He asks them to catch Gabbar for the payment of a princely amount of Rs 50,000 (with the lure of giving them an extra Rs 30,000 if he is caught alive). The two agree; have skirmishes with the dacoits and let them know of their intent. The two clearly start liking village life, Veeru tripping for the vivacious but talkative Basanti while Jay develops feelings for Thakur's young and widowed daughter-in-law Radha. The day of reckoning arrives and Jay and Veeru take on the might of Gabbar. In the ensuing action, Jay loses his life but Thakur gets Gabbar alive, only to kill him with his spiked shoes and have his revenge. The film's scale with its train action sequences, horse chases, fist and gun fights and its classic message of the victory of good over evil has a special place in the hearts and minds of Indians. Fixed maturity plans slide
Kotak Mahindra Mutual Fund has also indicated it may not be able to redeem the entire amounts in six such schemes. The development was on account of their exposure to debt papers of the Essel group. There are fears that over the coming weeks more fund houses may announce similar steps. According to Manoj Nagpal of Outlook Asia Capital, as many as 40 fixed plans having exposure to the Zee group will mature in three months. The Essel group on Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to pay each debtor. "As per the arrangement with the lenders, a resolution for the repayment will be achieved by September 2019. The Essel group is confident to complete the repayment towards each and every lender," it said. The popularity of mutual funds have grown manifold over the past few years, posing competition to alternate avenues such as bank deposits. But the image of debt schemes carrying low risk will take a hit because of the current development. Analysts say investors, henceforth, will be aware of the fact that mutual funds, too, carry risks."FMPs were very close to fixed deposits as far as the product construct goes. Now there is going to be question mark in the minds of investors and advisors on FMPs being a replacement to FDs."The development also raises question on the suitability of debt MFs being risk free. All this while, investors thought debt MFs were risk free. that notion will now be challenged,'' Amol Joshi, founder of PlanRupee Investment Services, told The Telegraph.Harsh Roongta, a personal finance expert, feels there will be a positive fallout from the event. "Investors will become aware that when they invest money, there is a risk involved."Sebi actionCapital market regulator Sebi has come out with revised guidelines for system audit to be conducted by mutual funds and asset management companies (AMCs).The guidelines come after "considering the importance of system audit in technology driven asset management activity and to enhance and standardise the system audit".Besides, mutual funds (MFs)/ AMCs have been directed to constitute a technology committee entrusted with the task of reviewing the cyber security and cyber resilience framework for MFs. Vote for genuine change in Tamil Nadu: Kamal Haasan
Don't forget your duty to vote and do it ethically without selling it" he pleaded with the people. He said he was overwhelmed to see women, particularly with children in their hands and youth attending his meetings during nights and also braving the scorching sun, though he may arrive late for meetings. This showed the faith people had in him and his party, he said. . He said that Cauvery issue could not be solved by mere talking about it. But farmers should be trained in integrated farming to earn good income. Their multi-varied activities should be brought to focus. "For example, cold storages at a small level can be established for the benefit of vegetable farmers," he said. Later he asked the candidates to speak. P. Duraisamy said that Kamal Haasan should live for 200 years. Immediately Kamal Haasan said that Duraisamy exaggerated certain things when he spoke about him and praying for him to live for 200 years is one such exaggeration. "That is not possible and again and again I am saying that time is short. Already I have come very late. You have to excuse me for that. But don't let loose the opportunity now. Vote for good people, viz. candidates of MNM," he said. ... DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. How mercury impacts the fire signs
Harbouring the image of being argumentative, they create new concepts and are appreciated for bringing in originality into their intellectual endeavours. Aries are the storehouse to a witty and inventive mind, with quick prompting and ability to mould any comment or question into their favour as its nuclei. Mentally alert and sharp, they however do not appreciate delays as any hurdle or blockage ends up frustrating them, which extends onto the other essential aspects of their lives, thus acting as a hurdle in their communicative as well as cognitive ability. Aries are also known to be impulsive beings, who in their impatient approach to situations, end up reaching to half concrete conclusion, which bring with itself undesired repercussions. They are thus advised to refrain from turning too headstrong and rigid in their thinking and decision making, as this will only make them a short tempered and anxious being. Leo July 23-August 23 Mercury in Leo, empowers those under this sign as strong willed and authoritative people, whose mind functions on a broad comprehensiveness, exhibiting them as one who is highly opinionated and with a rigid view point. As Leos are associated with grandeur, they end up exhibiting leadership quality, wherein their decision making is accepted and followed by all. They fascinate everyone by their sense of authority, prevalent in their communication skills as well as written works. However, this also at times makes them proud and boastful, leading them to turn arrogant and putting everything around them under the mental microscope of vanity and prudence. Also, mercury can make them turn lazy in terms of mental attitude, for which it is necessary that they focus their attention towards sharpening their cognitive skills. They should not just focus on the broad scale aspect of situations, but also the minute details, else it may cause negative outcome to their plans. Sagittarius November 23-December 21 Mercury in Sagittarius helps a person to develop an independent, versatile mind, which aids them in expressing their opinions in an impulsive yet direct way. Being known as social and communicative, they never refrain from speaking their mind, even if their judgement of others may falter at times. They have a knack for beyond the mundane subjects like philosophy, foreign culture or religion and are always on a quest to seek deeper understanding of them as well as share it with everyone. Yet, even though with an alert sensory system, at times they find it difficult to hold their fixation onto one subject for longer time frames and hence they may seem forgetful and impractical and oftenaccompanied with impatience and misinterpretation in their judgement. They need to acknowledge the fact that others' viewpoint may not always be in coherence with their own but they still need to accept and respect it, rather than losing tolerance for the same and drifting apart.
