Australian Open 2019: Naomi Osaka outlasts Hsieh Su-wei to enter last 16

'I just didn't want to give up,' said Osaka, who made 42 unforced errors and received a code violation after throwing her racquet in the match. 'I really love Grand Slams so I did anything I could do to stay here a bit longer.' She started well, firing down two aces in her first service game before unleashing a backhand winner that left Hsieh wrong-footed. But Hsieh pounced as the error-rate crept and the normally softly-spoken Osaka became agitated when she conceded three set points, dropping to her haunches as she tried to regain composure. She saved one with an ace and managed to run Hsieh around to fend off another but hit a wild forehand over her opponent's head on the third to go down a set. The second set started badly for Osaka when she conceded an early break and then continued to struggle as Hsieh zipped around the court making stunning returns. Osaka broke back against the run of play and built momentum with a crucial hold on break point before serving out the set on 42 minutes. She fell heavily late in the set but shook off any discomfort and proceeded to open the final set with a break after smashing a sizzling cross-court backhand. She held to go 2-0 up, extending her winning streak to seven games. Hsieh finally began to tire and the younger player was in control as she closed out the match. Southern Railway starts pasting Tricolour logo on trains

The exercise would continue till it covers all coaches," A K Kathpal, Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer, Southern Railway, told Express. According to official records, 6,603 express coaches are maintained by the Chennai, Salem, Madurai, Tiruchy, Palakkad and Thiruvananthpuram divisions of the Southern Railway. "Stickers are being pasted on mainline coaches housed at the Basin Bridge coaching terminal and at the Gopalsamy Nagar yard in Chetpet. So far, 6,134 coaches have been covered", added Kathpal. The decision to display the Tricolour stickers on train coaches was taken by the national transporter after the Union government decided to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi for two years. Official sources said that national flag stickers would be displayed permanently and the changes had been proposed in coach maintenance manual. "In September 2016, national flags were pasted on both sides of locomotives and the exercise has been made permanent. Similarly, maintenance and coach production manuals have been altered to make these changes permanent," explained a senior official. As part of the celebrations, the Southern Railway is also planning to draw murals containing quotes from Gandhi at the railway premises. Tambaram car shed holds 1350 emu coaches, while 324 coaches are maintained at Velachery. Totally, 368 coaches undergo maintenance at Avadi car shed. BJP wants coalition govt in K'taka to fall

The first step has been taken with the showcause notices given to rebels Ramesh Jarkiholi and Mahesh Kumthalli after Saturday's CLP meeting. But with other missing Congressmen being actively wooed by the BJP to bring down the Janata Dal(S)-Congress coalition government, it's clear that the BJP is not backing off. Even if BJP leader B.S. Yeddyurappa is saying one thing and doing quite the other. In fact, the Ramesh Jarkiholi-led clique, that the BJP was banking on to deliver 14-16 plus legislators to vote against the government in the 224 member Assembly, where the Congress and JD(S) with 37 MLAs, and others, together had 120, is still very much in play. With the independents withdrawing support last Tuesday, bringing numbers down to 118, the BJP is circling the Congress creaky wagon, ready to corral even half a dozen malcontents, left out of the highly ill-advised December 22 Cabinet expansion. The BJP's unspoken strategy is not to form a BJP government under former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, at all. The primary imperative of the BJP top brass has always been to keep the state of Karnataka on edge, until parliamentary polls, and ensure that while its own flock of 104 legislators don't stray into either the Congress or the JD(S) camp, the coalition government lurches from one crisis to another. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy's government, alongside the beleaguered Congress, will then stand accused of not tending to the state's many problems, particularly the drought in the northern districts where the BJP hopes to make its biggest killing in parliamentary polls. It serves no-one better than the BJP, if the coalition government falls and is shown up as a failed experiment. In the run up to Parliament polls where every state will count, particularly after losing the three Hindi heartland states, the BJP cannot allow Karnataka, where it could easily mop up more than 17 of the 28 MPs it already has, to slip out of its hands. ... Keep relations at home, N Chandrababu Naidu tells Telugu Desam leaders

The immediate provocation for Mr Naidu's warning was a recent visit by TRS MLAs Talasani Srinivasa Yadav and Madhavaram Krishna Rao to AP, during which they were felicitated by community leaders and TD leaders too participated. Talasani Srinivasa Yadav visited Vijayawa-da, Bhimavaram and other places and was felicitated by the Yadava community with TD leaders also present. When Kukatpally MLA Madhavaram Krishna Rao visited Dwaraka-tirumala in West Goda-vari, TD general secretary Chelikani Sombabu welcomed him and accompanied him on the visit. TD leaders complained to Chief Mini-ster Naidu about this and provided photographs as proof. This prompted Mr Naidu to warn party leaders: 'TD leaders should not participate in any activities along with TRS leaders when they visit the state. If any leader takes part in such events then strict action will be taken against them. If any leader has a relationship with TRS leaders, confine it to your homes, do not show it on the streets.' Several Seemandhra leaders are settled in Telangana and have joined the TRS. They have relatives in AP, just as some Telangana leaders have relatives in AP. ... Always a fan of grandma's recipes

Over 70 people were present at the event. The chef shared various experiences about his trips across India, which were a definite eye-opener and pushed him further to introduce Indian dishes to the world. One of the specialties in his restaurant is Desi Tacos with Tepla, a flatbread from Gujarat and Goan style Pork Vindaloo served with a guava tart with spicy chilli ice cream. 'My favourite dish will always be my grandma's duck curry'', he says, recalling his childhood memories. His grandma was his biggest inspiration to try his hand at cooking. 'My grandma was able to delight anyone with her food. I want to achieve that, too,' he adds. Asked about his views on molecular kitchen, a particular kind of kitchen where science and food come together, he says, 'I'm not overly fond of that sort of cooking. For me, food should be able to leave a lasting impression on the people; it should trigger memories'. To the aspiring chefs out there, he says, 'Be more patient, do not rush into things. Let everything fall into its place'. ... Dailyhunthttps://ask.fm/juckzingchuk

Album of exotica

Part of the income from the homestay is invested in community development. Ngunu Ziro has been promoting the rich culture of the Apatanis, one of the 26 tribes found in this region, by documenting their homes and celebrating their festivals. "In March, we celebrate the Myoko festival which focuses on themes of fertility and prosperity. The Dree festival in July is celebrated to ensure a bountiful harvest by offering prayers to the Gods. During Dree, folk songs are sung along with dancing and during this time we get a lot of tourists," says Tatu. Ziro's geographical location makes it a haven for butterflies with some of them endemic to the region. To promote butterfly tourism Tatu has been conducting 'Butterfly Meets' for the last couple of years. "The fifth edition of the Ziro Butterfly Meet was held at Yazali in September 2018 with the 'Butterfly Man of India' Isaac Kehimkar joining us. The most important butterflies of Ziro are the Kaiser-e-hind, Bhutan Glory, Brown Gorgon and Himalayan Scar Evening Brown with the first three butterflies never being found together anywhere, except in Ziro," says the 61-year-old. The orchid trail has been evoking great interest. "The inspiration came from a book, The Orchids of Ziro: Arunachal Pradesh, authored by Naresh Swami. We cooperated and helped the authorities set up the trail, which was inaugurated by Arunachal Pradesh's Forests and Environment Minister Nabam Rebia. There are 150 varieties of orchids to be found in this 1.5km trail, which has become a great trekking spot," explains Tatu. Dailyhunthttps://justpaste.it/61sya

Acquisition of fertile land is easier and more thoughtless than ever before

A compulsory social impact assessment and higher compensation and more humane rehabilitation and resettlement were also provided for. In December 2014, an ordinance was promulgated - allegedly for farmers' welfare and to meet the strategic and developmental needs of India expeditiously -that rendered useless many of the reformist provisions of the Act. Protest, both within the BJP and from the Opposition, against the ordinance and the amendment bill in three successive parliamentary sessions, lobbying by civil society and farmers' protests prevented the passage of the bill to replace the ordinance, which lapsed in August 2015.This did not stop the Centre. State rules were now used to dilute the welfare measures of the LARR Act. State amendments to the Act were used to incorporate the provisions of the lapsed ordinance. Notifications and circulars of the state governments played a big part too. For instance, in calculating compensation for land acquired in Chhattisgarh and Telangana, state rules have fixed the multiplying factor for rural land at 1 and 1.25 respectively, as opposed to the 2 fixed in the LARR Act. In January 2015, Tamil Nadu introduced a Section which provides that lands acquired under state Acts - no less than 80 per cent land in the state is acquired under these - are exempt from the LARR Act. Backdoor invalidation of the reformist provisions through the judicial mechanism is another trick that has been used with impunity. According to a Centre for Policy Research report, Section 24 - allowing a lapse in land acquisition under the 1894 Act in certain cases - has been the most litigated provision of the LARR Act, since its inception. A study of all apex court litigation with respect to this Act shows that 97 per cent of them were brought under Section 24. In almost 83 per cent cases, where no compensation had been paid to the land losers and the conditions of Section 24 had been met, the court quashed the land acquisition process. In 445 cases, it offered compensation that was on an average 600 per cent higher than that given by the government. The court was keen on applying the reformist provisions of the LARR Act, but, at the same time, it was accused of sabotaging these. In the Pune Municipal Corporation case, the apex court held that since Section 24 (2) is a retrospective clause, land acquisition process would be deemed lapsed and acquisition would be covered under new LARR Act. However, in February 2018, a three-judge bench headed by Arun Mishra, in the Indore Development Authority case, overruled the previous judgment. This raised question of political bias. Later that month, three judges of the apex court criticized the actions of the Arun Mishra bench, while hearing a case involving the interpretation of Section 24 of the LARR Act. They also requested that dealing with similar matters be deferred until a decision has been taken on whether the matter should be referred to a larger bench or not. There has been little or no initiative to implement a National Land Use Policy to regulate the acquisition of fertile land. The present dispensation's attempt to snatch land and other natural resources from the farming communities is predatory - the ordinances and the several bids, with or without success, to get state governments to dumb down the Act are proof of this. Acquisition of fertile land in present-day India is thus easier and more thoughtless than ever before. 1677073 Dailyhunthttps://justpaste.it/5zpyz

UP potato keen to tap Jharkhand market

The purpose of this meet is to make these better quality potatoes available in your state. Also, we wish to build a system whereby potato growers of UP can sell their produce directly to traders in Jharkhand for a fair price," pitched in Pankaj Kumar, also a deputy director of horticulture posted in Meerut. On the sidelines of the meet, Yadav said UP had grown around 160 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of potatoes this time like every year. "Around 45 lakh MT ends up being surplus and we sell these to Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Jharkhand, and also countries like Nepal and Sri Lanka, besides those in West Asia. If growers can send their produce straightaway to potato dealers in these places, they may make more profit," he added.Devendra Tyagi, a farmer from Agra, told this reporter that surplus produce meant he often didn't get reasonable rate for his potatoes. "I grow around 500MT a year and am able to sell only 90 per cent of it, sometimes at a throwaway price. Wholesalers pocket the maximum profit. Selling to a direct market or a cooperative society in another state will not deprive me of my share of profit," he said.Madan Prasad, vice-president of Jharkhand Alu-Pyaaj Bikreta Sangh, said Jharkhand bought potatoes mostly from Bengal. "We are keen on getting better produce straight from growers. If quality is good, buyers in the retail market won't mind paying Rs 2 extra a kilo," he said when asked if increased transportation charges would discourage buyers.Surendra Singh, managing director of Jharkhand state vegetable marketing federation (Vegfed) that has 451 co-operative societies affiliated to it, said as of now, they were dealing only in green vegetables. "But, we can consider buying potatoes from UP."Manish Kumar, CMD of Dynamic Tarang, said he had a food-processing unit in Baharagora where potato products could be made. "We came here to explore possibilities of using good quality potatoes from UP," he added. Dailyhunthttp://www.gdempsey.com/UserProfile/tabid/57/userId/82740/Default.aspx

Yemen's warring parties refuse to meet together

"Recent discussions have been constructive" and Cammaert "continues to encourage the parties to resume the joint meetings in order to finalize a mutually agreed redeployment plan," Dujarric said. While U.N envoy Martin Griffiths said last week that the government and Houthis "have largely adhered" to a cease-fire in the port of Hodeida and the surrounding area, he said progress on a pullout of rival forces, humanitarian access and other issues agreed to in Stockholm has been slow. He said new talks between the warring sides would not take place until there was "substantive progress." Griffiths had said there would be a new round of talks in January but diplomats said he is now looking to February. The Security Council is expected to vote this week on a British-drafted U.N resolution that would establish a political mission headed by Cammaert to oversee implementation of the Stockholm agreement. The resolution would approve Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' proposal for up to 75 U.N monitors to be deployed for an initial period of six months to oversee the cease-fire in Hodeida, demining operations and the redeployment of forces. U.N. officials said one issue Cammaert has faced since his arrival in Houthi-controlled Hodeida is his lack of freedom of movement on the ground. The conflict in Yemen began with the 2014 takeover of Sanaa by the Iranian-backed Houthis, who toppled the government of Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi. A Saudi-led coalition allied with Yemen's internationally recognized government has been fighting the Houthis since 2015. Saudi-led airstrikes have hit schools, hospitals and wedding parties and killed thousands of Yemeni civilians. The Houthis have fired long-range missiles into Saudi Arabia and targeted vessels in the Red Sea. Yemen, the Arab world's poorest country, has been plunged into the world's worst humanitarian crisis. U.N. humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock told the Security Council last week that the humanitarian situation had not improved since the Stockholm agreement and "remains catastrophic," with 80 percent of Yemen's population — over 24 million people — now in need of assistance. "They include nearly 10 million people just one step away from famine," he said. ... Dailyhunthttp://www.subzerotyler.com/UserProfile/tabid/61/userId/65988/Default.aspx

Karnataka glue for Opposition

wo Independent MLAs - H. Nagesh and R. Shankar - announced earlier this week that they were withdrawing support from the Congress-JDS government. Two Congress MLAs are incommunicado. "The BJP talked about its so-called fight against corruption in its national executive. On the same day, it resorted to horse-trading in Karnataka. That reveals the double standard," Kumaraswamy said in his speech. Mamata thanked him for coming to attend the event despite the troubles in his state. In her speech, She questioned the BJP over the alleged misuse of crores of rupees for horse-trading."You are offering crores and crores and crores to buy MLAs in Karnataka to topple a stable government, duly elected by the people there. Why don't you, instead, use that same money for the benefit of the poor people? I find this bewildering," Mamata said.Kumaraswamy said: "Democracy is being reduced to a numbers game. Legislators are being treated as commodity." He added: "What you have been watching for a week is how the BJP is trying to destabilise the stable government in Karnataka. I want to put one question to the honourable Prime Minister. Recently, during his party meeting, he said he wanted to remove corruption and clean the country. But what is going on in Karnataka?"The JDS leader questioned the source of the money the BJP is allegedly offering Congress MLAs.Andhra Pradesh chief minister Naidu also pointed at Karnataka to condemn the BJP. "From this meeting, we warn the Centre and the BJP. If you meddle with Karnataka, you will pay a huge price," said the TDP chief.Congress leader Kharge, who mentioned the Karnataka situation in his speech, later told journalists at a news conference that of the four Congress MLAs who skipped a legislature party meeting in Bangalore on Friday, two had satisfactorily explained their absence."Regarding the other two, first, we will issue a showcause notice asking for an explanation. Then we will take some action after discussion with the party members," said Kharge at Bidhan Bhavan, the Bengal Congress headquarters.Kharge accused the BJP of trying to intimidate Congress MLAs in Karnataka into defecting. "This is not the first for the BJP. They did it in Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand, and Arunachal Pradesh. Now they are trying to do it in Karnataka. But they are doomed to fail," he said. Copa Del Rey: Dembele double helps Barcelona defeat Levante

'Whatever happens on the field of play today, Levante are going to take this situation to the Federation tomorrow,' Catalan said earlier on Thursday. 'We feel that there is a solid enough precedent to back up the club's decision to do so.' Chumi was banned after he received a yellow card playing for Barcelona's B team in the Segunda B division. Barcelona, however, insist a change in the rules in November means the suspension does not carry over into the Copa del Rey. 'There were never any doubts about Chumi, none,' Barca coach Ernesto Valverde said. 'We did everything right. Tomorrow we will be in the draw, we have no doubts, not before and not now.' Levante may feel precedent is on their side after Real Madrid were disqualified from the Copa del Rey in 2015 for fielding Denis Cheryshev, despite the player being suspended. Madrid had overlooked Cheryshev receiving three yellow cards while playing for Villarreal in the competition the previous season. 'I tried to focus on the game,' Levante coach Paco Lopez said. 'I understand that the club does what it thinks is right. There are rules we all have to follow.' Barcelona were certainly worthy winners on the pitch at the Camp Nou and, as it stands, will join Real Madrid, Sevilla, Real Betis, Valencia, Girona, Getafe and Espanyol in the last eight of a tournament they won, as well as La Liga, last year. That domestic double arguably took its toll in Europe, however, and Valverde has been under pressure to afford his key players more rest this season. Barca play Lyon in the Champions League last 16 next month. Messi started, along with fellow regulars like Jordi Alba, Clement Lenglet, Ivan Rakitic and Arthur. Luis Suarez, Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Marc Andre ter Stegen all began on the bench. Barcelona were dominant from the outset, as a curling Messi free-kick was pushed wide and Philippe Coutinho, excellent again, shot over. Messi and Arturo Vidal both went close and finally in the 30th minute, Dembele made the breakthrough, latching onto Messi's pass before bundling the ball into the net. A minute later, the Frenchman had a second. Coutinho found Messi on the break and he slipped free the sprinting Dembele, who ran round Aitor Fernandez and scuffed the ball home off the goalkeeper's outstretched leg. Levante were still only a goal away from extra-time but Messi ended any hopes of a comeback. Dembele freed Nelson Semedo down the right and he found the Argentinian in the middle. A chipped finish was all it needed. Dailyhunthttp://www.chaipaai.com/author/zeenkeenveen/

In search of more funds, PMC proposes hike in multiple taxes: property, water and sewage

The PMC administration has proposed a hike of 5.5 per cent in general property tax, 1.5 per cent hike in water tax and 5 per cent hike in sewage charges for the next financial year. "The proposed hike would increase civic revenue by Rs 110 crore. The new tax structure would be applicable for mobile tower companies and information technology companies," said Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao. Rao said the hike in the tax structure has been proposed to balance the increase in the civic body's expenditure by boosting revenue collection from its taxes. If the proposal is approved, the property tax would be in the range of 22.25 per cent to 55.5 per cent, the new water tax would be 7.25 per cent and sewage charge would be 14.5 per cent in the next financial year. The general property tax is currently in the range of 16.75 per cent to 50.0 per cent. The water tax is 5.75 per cent and sewage tax is 9.5 per cent. The civic administration had earlier proposed introduction of user charges to manage the increased expenditure of processing garbage generated in civic limits. It said that the civic body had to spent Rs 374.81 crore, Rs 402.97 crore and Rs 465.29 crore in 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 respectively, to scientifically dispose the waste generated in the city. The PMC said it has only been able to get a revenue of Rs 193 crore from the existing charges for processing waste, and that's why it wants to introduce user charges, to generate more revenue. The civic administration said that the hike of 15 per cent in water charges has been proposed as per an earlier decision by the civic body, to increase the tax by 15 per cent every year till 2020-21, to raise funds for the 24×7 supply project in the city. The tax proposal has to be approved by February 20, as per the provisions of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, and the civic Standing Committee has decided to take up the matter in a special meeting. Pride of place for 3 leaders at Mamata rally

ll three are former Union ministers who served in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee cabinet. Yashwant was finance minister, Shourie minister of communications and information technology, and Shatrughan the health minister. Of the three, actor-turned-politician Shatrughan is still in the BJP and the current MP from Patna Sahib."Since Independence, this is the first government fudging statistics and inflating development data to fool the people. This is a dangerous game," said Yashwant, 81.The patriarch from the old guard, a member of the BJP's hallowed Margdarshak Mandal not so long ago, Yashwant said he had achieved everything he could have aspired for in his career and his only desire was to see the ouster of the "anti-people" government from the Centre."Sabka sath, sabka vikas was the (Modi) slogan. Sabka sath toh leh liya, par kiya sabka nash (Everybody's support was taken, but instead of development, destruction was handed out)," Yashwant said to thunderous applause.Shourie urged the Opposition to work together "at any cost" to ensure the exit of the Modi government. "We have to have one single aim - throwing the BJP out. Undertake sacrifices readily. Become Arjun (the Mahabharat warrior) and do not waver from this one lakshya (aim)."Shourie stressed that the mission "will not be easy". "One candidate against every BJP candidate has to be ensured. Division of votes will be lethal. This sacrifice is a must, out of love for this country," the 77-year-old said.According to Shourie, Modi knows the "reality" and will fight hard. "Trust me, Modi knows his grip has loosened. He will do everything he can to cling to power."Shatrughan described his presence at the Brigade as "an act of defiance" enough for the BJP to expel him. The Patna Sahib MP said he had told Yashwant so on the dais. Still, Shatrughan said he would continue "holding up a mirror" to the party's face.Shatrughan spoke at length, infusing humour and Bollywood-style quips in his speech. He attacked the Modi government over the Rafale deal, demonetisation and GST. "I am not saying you (Modi) are guilty. But I will also not say that you are not. If you keep suppressing facts like this, people will continue to say chowkidar chor hain,"Shatrughan added, echoing Rahul Gandhi and lavishing praise on the Congress chief.Shatrughan said during Vajpayee's government, there was lokshahi (people's rule) in the country but under Modi, there was only tanashahi (dictatorship).Urging all non-BJP leaders to help change the fate of the nation by bringing in a new government, Shatrughan stressed the need for unity despite diversity. RBI-industry meet: India Inc pitches for rate cut to prop up growth

Suggestions come ahead of the sixth bi-monthly monetary policy statement for 2018-19 scheduled to be announced on February 7. CRR, currently at 4 per cent, is the percentage of deposits kept as reserves with the RBI. Repo rate, currently at 6.5 per cent, is the rate at which the central bank gives loans to the banks. CII lauded the RBI for steps taken to ease financing challenges faced by the real sector, especially micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), through various measures such as reducing Turn Around Time (TAT) and measures to boost liquidity in the economy. On measures to address the financial challenges faced by the MSMEs, CII suggested that the RBI consider limiting the collaterals sought by banks to 133 per cent of the exposure and eliminate the need for personal guarantees where sufficient collateral exists. The chamber delegation, led by its president designate Uday Kotak, also suggested that letters of undertaking (LoUs) for buyers' credit for the cases where MSMEs investing to expand capacity may be permitted and the RBI might consider allowing banks to sanction buyers' credit facility to MSMEs, wherever import of raw materials is being done under letter of credit. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) also made a pitch for a cut in repo rate and CRR to enable lowering of lending rates by banks. A reduction in repo rate and CRR would help in reviving the investment cycle in the country and will also boost consumption and support growth, FICCI President Sandip Somany said. It will also help in reviving the investment cycle in the country and will also boost consumption and support growth. "The need of the hour is to have an accommodative monetary policy, focusing on growth. The objectives of the Monetary Policy Committee should not be restricted to only price stability but also to consider growth and exchange rate stability," he said. On the RBI's February 12 circular, CII highlighted that while it was aimed at improving the credit discipline and early identification of probable defaults, but it has, however, put pressure on already distressed sectors impacted due to business performance reasons and, hence, should be given sufficient time to resolve the defaults. Among many key recommendations, CII recommended that the RBI may revisit the lending restrictions on the weak banks under prompt corrective action and consider allowing them to lend to the National Housing Bank which, in turn, can be used to finance housing projects through housing finance companies. ... Chinese police to crack down on 'colour revolutions'

Robots will not replace you: Survey

Just 9 per cent of employers in the annual survey said automation would directly lead to job losses, while 4 per cent did not know what the impact would be. 'More and more robots are being added to the workforce, but humans are too,' said Jonas Prising, Chairman & CEO of ManpowerGroup. 'Tech is here to stay and it's our responsibility as leaders to become Chief Learning Officers and work out how we integrate humans with machines.' More than 3 million industrial robots will be in use in factories around the world by 2020, according to the International Federation of Robotics. The Manpower survey found that 84 per cent of firms planned to help their workers learn new skills by 2020, compared to just 21 per cent in 2011. The global talent shortage is at a 12-year-high, with many companies struggling to fill jobs, according to Manpower. In Germany, where unemployment is at a record low, a shortage of talent was the top concern of small-to-mid-sized companies heading into 2019, according to a survey by the BVMW Mittelstand association. The Manpower survey found IT skills are particularly in demand with 16 per cent of companies expecting to hire staff in IT. In manufacturing and production, where industrial robots are increasingly doing routine tasks, firms expect to hire more people in customer-facing roles that require skills such as communication, leadership, negotiation and adaptability. Employers in Singapore, Costa Rica, Guatemala and South Africa expected to add the most staff, while firms in Bulgaria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Norway, Slovakia and Romania predicted a decrease in headcount, the survey found. ... Vidhu Vinod Chopra's directorial may also do away with Rajkumar Hirani

'But that means Vinod will need to wait till the allegations are nullified if he needs to get Hirani on board for that film as well. The second film in the deal was Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga apart from Sanju. So, if Vinod needs to move his film quickly, he will have to do away with Hirani's name from the project as a producer,' says a well-informed trade source. It is to be noted that a few Bollywood voices have stood by Hirani in the case. Incidentally, the first casualty from that #MeToo allegation list was director Soumik Sen whose film Why Cheat India released this week with his name in the credits, but he was kept away from promoting the film. — Sanskriti Media ... Manipur groups want CM Biren Singh to clear air on citizen bill

iren Singh had said his government would oppose the bill until and unless a clause for exemption of Manipur and protection of the indigenous people of the state is inserted in it. The chief minister and his team met Union home minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi recently. He said the Manipur government demanded that the Centre should first consider the protection of the smaller indigenous communities residing in Manipur and the Northeast if the bill was to be passed in the Rajya Sabha."We strongly oppose the bill which is a threat and challenge to the indigenous people of the region. The influx that would result because of the bill will flood the original settlers of Manipur, Assam and other northeastern states. The bill should not be passed in the Rajya Sabha," said Indrani. The North East Peoples' Parliament (a regional organisation) stated that demands for political autonomy for the whole northeastern region might arise if the legitimate demand for withdrawal of the bill was not fulfilled.Demanding withdrawal of the bill, various groups organised protests at Chingmeirong, Lamphel and Sagolband Tera Amudon in Imphal West district and at Checkon in Imphal East. The protest at Chingmeirong was organised by the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System.R.K. Tharaksana, general secretary of Khwai Lamphel Women Development organisation, which along with student groups, organised the rally at Laphel, said while the indigenous people of Manipur are threatened by the increasing number of immigrants, the bill, which allows immigrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh to settle in India, was passed in the Lok Sabha. Tony Stark's sad end and 5 other spoilers dropped in Spider-Man Far From Home trailer

If you are a Marvel fan who is clued into Avengers 4 fan theories, you have a fair idea what will happen in Endgame. And nothing confirms those fan theories like Spider-Man trailer does. For those who have been wondering about the timeline of Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man Far From Home, this earlier comment by Sony chief Amy Pascal will be illuminating, 'What I think we should focus on is this Spider-Man who started in Civil War and then has this [Homecoming] movie, and then will be in the Avengers movie. And we are starting now the next one which will start a few minutes after Avengers 4 wraps as a story.' The next Spidey movie is not only set immediately after Endgame, it will also release two months after Avengers 4. 1.Peter Parker ain't dead For all those who were left with tears in our eyes as Spidey turned to dust in Iron Man's arms - perhaps the most poignant moment of Avengers: Infinity War - his summary return to the land of the living feels weird. While we all knew this was likely to happen, we wanted to pay good money and watch it in Avengers: Endgame trailer, not in a trailer. 2.Nick Fury, Maria Hill are back from dead too Not just Peter Parker, Nick Fury and Maria Hill - both of whom turned to dust at the end of Infinity War - return in Spider-Man trailer. Thanos' finger snap wasn't as deadly as we thought! 3.Iron Man is missing from the scene #SpiderManFarFromHome Everyone - Tony Stark is dead Me - pic.twitter.com/33otDPfRX6 — 퐋퐞퐱  (@itsyagurl21) January 15, 2019 While Sony has been careful not to give outright clues, there are enough indications of how the Marvel Cinematic Universe will shape up. The one person who is completely missing from the scene is Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark. For instance, the cheque for Parker is signed by Pepper Potts, not Stark. There's a scene that teases that Tony Stark's former Avengers headquarters has been rebuilt. The one big clue is Happy telling Parker that he's all alone on this one. 4.Peter Parker's passport Huh... look at that. They're hiding the YEAR on Peter's passport. Maybe Far From Home is a prequel to Infinity War after all? I mean... why hide the year? Thoughts? pic.twitter.com/aLPy7t4EUx — John Campea (@johncampea) January 15, 2019 In a bid to hide Spider-Man Far From Home's timeline, Parker's passport doesn't have any dates in it, although it does reveal that August 10th is his birthday. So, while accepting that timing is of utmost importance, Sony is dropping breadcrumbs about the events in those movies. 5.Peter Parker's grief I'm gonna just ignore the fact that: - Pepper Potts signed the check from the Stark Relief Foundation- Peter looked at the suit Tony gave him with sadness in his eyes- Happy said "You're all alone"-Tony Stark is DEAD #SpiderManFarFromHome pic.twitter.com/6nCjFDUch6 — 혔혦혳혤혦혥혦혴 (@spideyxbishop) January 15, 2019 For a brief moment, we see a sad Peter Parker looking at the suit that Tony Stark gave him. While most of the trailer has a cool tone, that one moment signifies that Parker is grieving. The outfit that Stark made for him could be a reminder that Iron Man gave up his life to save other Avengers -- one of the most prominent Endgame theories out there. However, Marvel sure likes to mislead the audiences with its trailer and that can't be discounted in this case. That, perhaps, will be the best case scenario for the fans. function catchException() {try{ twitterJSDidLoad(); }catch(e){}} function getAndroidVersion(ua) {ua = (ua || navigator.userAgent).toLowerCase(); var match = ua.match(/android\\s([0-9\\.]*)/);return match ? match[1] : false;}; var versions='4.2.2'; var versionArray=versions.split(',');var currentAndroidVersion=getAndroidVersion();if(versionArray.indexOf(currentAndroidVersion)!=-1){var blocks = document.getElementsByTagName('blockquote'); for(var i = 0; i < blocks.length; i++){blocks[i].innerHTML = '';}}Dailyhunthttp://www.feedbooks.com/user/4844168/profile

HT Explainer: Why schoolteachers are up in arms in Punjab?

The Congress had, in its poll manifesto, promised to regularise their services and remove pay-related discrepancies. However, its government kept deferring the matter, triggering protests. On October 3, the state cabinet finally decided to regularise their services on a fixed monthly sum of ₹10,300 (initial of regular pay scale) with grade pay of ₹5,000 in addition for three years. The salary offered is roughly a third of what they are getting at present. They rejected it and started a protest under the banner of Sanjha Adhyapak Morcha (SAM), a group formed by 26 teacher unions, in Patiala on October 7. Another 5,178 teachers recruited under the Pendu Sahyogi Teacher Scheme in November 2014 are also protesting here. Their jobs were to be regularised last year on completion of three years, but nothing has been done so far. Why feeling short-changed? Contractual teachers - 7,356 recruited under the SSA, 1,194 under the RMSA, 220 for model schools and 116 for Adarsh schools - want regularisation of their jobs with pay protection. The salary of ₹15,300 per month offered to them means a drastic cut as they get ₹42,300 or more per month at present. A number of them had joined the SSA and RMSA after quitting lucrative jobs in private schools. 'We have been teaching in government schools for 10 years or so, but they now want to cut our salaries. Never before such injustice has been done,' says SSA-RMSA Teachers Union president Hardeep Toderpur. What does the govt say? Over 14,450 contractual teachers were recruited by societies running the SSA and RMSA to improve the pupil-teacher ratio. The two programmes were funded jointly by the Centre and the state on 60:40 basis. Though they were teaching in government schools, they were not employees of the state government. About 6,000 of them, who cleared the teacher eligibility test, got regular jobs during recruitment held subsequently and the rest are continuing on contract. 'As per the regularisation policy approved by the cabinet, it is a case of change of employer. They were engaged by societies and will now be employed by the department on regularisation. They will have to be governed by norms for the government staff,' says a school education department official, denying the salary-cut charge. A government notification issued on January 15, 2015, for departments, according to him, entitles them to basic pay for three years and full benefits thereafter. As for the 5,178 other teachers awaiting regularisation, their case has been sent to the finance department for approval and will then be put up before the cabinet. Where things stand? With the teacher unions rejecting the regularisation terms, the department gave the option to teachers to opt for regularisation on government terms or continue on contract with current salaries. An online portal was also set up to enable them to take their pick. The department officials had initially claimed that 94% of contractual teachers were willing to opt for regularisation, but the response has been tepid with most teachers ignoring the offer. Only 1,600-odd teachers, including some who were recruited in the master cadre three months ago, have given their options. What's stopping the govt? Despite the Centre cutting down its financial support under the newly integrated Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, which has replaced the SSA and RMSA, this year, the department is willing to pay teachers, who continue on contract, their current salaries. 'However, those who opt for regularisation will be paid basic pay. Government rules allow basic pay for first three years. And, these are applicable to all, including the state civil service,' says the department. What next? A delegation of the morcha leaders had a five-hour meeting with the CM's chief principal secretary Suresh Kumar last Tuesday, but there was no breakthrough. The teacher union leaders will now meet Amarinder, who is currently abroad, on November 5 where their demands will be discussed. Shah Jahan Regency movie review: Pretentious, vague and pointless

School-boyish in their need to impress, these literary devices have very little bearing to the story or its unfolding. They exist simply because they can. In the fallow marshland that is Bengali cinema, characters and their convictions are secondary to the filmmaker's vanity. The characters are urbane and in emotional crises. Scenes sweep past in a flurry of Fabindia curtains, designer stoles and tissue saris. Men and women speak in affected accents, indulge in vacuous conversations and look wistfully out of pretty windows. In Shah Jahan Regency, these impulses flow like the musty, old-carpet smell of Park Street restaurants. "Are you, by any chance, flirting with me?" asks one character. "Are you, by any chance, intimidated by me?" is the incredulous reply to the question. The banter, like the film, forced, pointless and ridiculously redundant. Set in what is supposed to be Kolkata's plushest hotel, the film is told from the perspective of the bumbling intern (Parambrata Chatterjee) of the most popular employee of the hotel, Samiran Bose (Abir Chatterjee). This would be a good time to point out that the film is an adaptation of a popular 1962 Bengali novel, Chowringhee, by celebrated author Shankar. It was made into a film starring iconic Bengali superstar Uttam Kumar in 1968. That adaptation, thankfully, had none of the affectations of this one but it certainly didn't age well. In Shah Jahan Regency, Mukherji introduces us to a plethora of characters that populate the corridors of the hotel with all the sincerity (and dramatic impetus) of a Madhur Bhandarkar expository sequence. Like Bhandarkar, the self-styled 'expose' filmmaker of this unfortunate country, Mukherji attacks the high-society world with the diligence of a myopic bulldog. He gnaws and gnaws till we are assured that every stereotype in this "microcosm" will find his or her suitable deliverance. The "fallen woman" will, not-so-poetically, fall to her death. The bumbling intern will be end up being a worldly-wise manager. The tragic monarch will fade away into oblivion. Even the subconscious of this film is strangely conflicted about its liberal pretensions. On one hand, we have a queer character pontificating about homophobia in a so-called civilised society, on the other, we are assured that Indian women rampantly misuse of article 498 A of the IPC to their benefit. The timeline of the film is a loop like the Maa flyover that runs through the heart of Kolkata. You don't know if the subplots are running parallel to each other or is it a linear sequence of events. All these questions don't have any answer really. Simply because the film itself is so smug in its vagueness, that it will taunt you for not "getting" it. The question to ask is why can't Bengali films find a new idiom? In their evocation of a certain nostalgia or ineffectual exotica, the films appear to be made for an audience twice removed-perhaps, the techies in Bangalore or the diaspora in the US. How a history post-graduate masterminded idol thefts in Rajasthan

The recovered idols, which are made of sapphire or Neelam, were stolen along with ornaments. Singh said Vikram Rajpurohit introduced Praveen Rajpurohit to Suresh Rawal, 36, in 2015 to carry out the theft. He added Rawal has been arrested earlier for smuggling gold and other antiques. The investigators have found that Rawal and Vikram Rajpurohit then surveyed the temple and roped in Yunus Khan, 47, a driver, who knew the area around the temple well, to help them to execute their plan. Singh said Rawal soon began avoiding Praveen Rajpurohit and Vikram Rajpurohit as he got cold feet despite taking Rs 20,000 advance for allegedly stealing the idols. In December, the four met again and decided to execute the plan with help of Reshmaram Garasiya, 50. On January 2, Vikram Rajpurohit and Garasiya surveyed the temple before allegedly stealing the idols three days later. Singh said Garasiya and his accomplices, Shivlal Garasiya, 20, and Dhanaram, 50, allegedly broke into the temple to steal the idols around 11 pm on January 5. Sirohi police superintendent, Jai Yadav, constituted a special team to investigate the theft and arrested all nine on Tuesday. Yadav said the accused have been arrested under Indian Penal Code's section 455 [trespass], 380 [theft], 411 [dishonestly receiving stolen property], 427 [causing damage to property] and 120 B [criminal conspiracy]. Yadav said they were trying to find whether the gang had any ties with a smuggler of artifacts identified as Khiyaram, who is from Jaipur. 'Khiyaram has been arrested in the past, too, in cases of smuggling of precious idols.' A Rajasthan government archaeologist called the idols priceless. 'The prices of the idols... depend on the taste of buyers. Some galleries purchase idols in lakhs from India and sell them through exhibitions in crores,' he said on condition of anonymity. He said earlier such stolen items were smuggled mostly to Germany. 'But after Germany made tougher laws on protecting antiquity works, the smuggling of antiques has stopped. Now the US is biggest market for these stolen pieces, followed by the UK and now it is moving to Australia.' He added that the smugglers generally identify ancient temples in remote villages and engage burglars. Dailyhunthttps://www.vox.com/users/suddirbaabu

Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray to sound poll bugle from Maharashtra CM's home turf

'We did one (rally) in Pandharpur, now we'll do one in Nagpur. There is no specific reason behind selecting Nagpur; It is an important city in Vidarbha. It should not be viewed as Nagpur is a stronghold of the chief minister or [Union minister Nitin] Gadkari. Then whose stronghold was Pandharpur?' he asked. Adsul added that Thackeray is going to hold rallies in Nashik in north Maharashtra and in south Maharashtra's Sangli. However, the dates for the same are yet to be fixed. 'One thing is clear, that the elections are around the corner, therefore we are going ahead with our plan. There are rallies being planned; in Nagpur we are expecting about 3 lakh people,' said Adsul. The Sena has a sizable influence in Mumbai, Thane, Konkan, parts of Marathwada, etc, but its base is weak in regions such as western Maharashtra and Vidarbha. Out of the 10 Lok Sabha seats, the Sena won four seats in Vidarbha in the 2014 general elections, which it contested in alliance with the BJP. Out of the 62 Assembly seats in Vidarbha, the Sena managed to win only four in the 2014 Assembly polls, which it contested solo. Meanwhile, Sena leaders maintain there is no movement on discussions on alliance with the BJP. A Sena MP said the BJP tells newspapers and television channels that it intends to have an alliance with the Sena, but no leader has come to Thackeray to hold talks so far. TRS, YSRC alliance to harm Andhra Pradesh, says Congress

Sunscreen, cosmetics harm coral reefs

According to several research studies, up to 14,000 tons of sunscreen end up in the world's oceans every year. To protect coral reefs, the state of Hawaii recently banned sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, two chemicals known to harm coral, with the law set to take effect in January 2021. Another substance, OC, can be found in cosmetics such as hair sprays and conditioners, as well as sunscreens. Although OC is toxic to coral at high concentrations, researchers wondered how it would affect coral at levels more likely to be encountered in the environment. To find out, they exposed coral to OC at various concentrations for a week. They found that the coral was sensitive to the compound at concentrations of 50 microgrammes per litre and greater, which is about 10 times higher than levels measured in the ocean. OC accumulated in the coral as fatty acid conjugates, which may interfere with the organism's metabolism. The team also detected increased levels of acylcarnitines in the exposed corals, which are produced under conditions of abnormal fatty acid metabolism and mitochondrial dysfunction. Researchers said that levels of OC in the ocean might have been underestimated previously because these measurements did not take into account OC fatty acid esters. Viswasam box office collection Day 10: Ajith film shows no sign of slowing down

The tweet read, "At the end of extended 1st week, #Viswasam has grossed £130,663 [₹ 1.20 Crs] at the #UK Box Office.." In another tweet, he wrote, "#USA is the only market where #Petta has not looked back after taking a huge lead over #Viswasam from Day 1.. In Other Overseas Markets such as #Canada , #UK , #France , #UAE / #GCC, #SriLanka , #Malaysia & #Singapore - #Viswasam is doing reasonably well OR - Picked up late." Viswasam received a mixed review from indianexpress.com. The 2-star review read, "Ajith tries to use his charm to overshadow the fact that the film has no new story to tell. But, we have seen him do it over and over again on Siva's watch. In spite of his stardom, he can only do so much to sell a film filled with redundant emotions and narrative techniques. The talented star cast comprising Nayanthara, Thambi Durai, Robo Shankar, Kovai Sarala have all been wasted." It continued, "In Veeram, Ajith protected his in-laws. In Vedalam, he protected his foster sister. In Vivegam, he saved his pregnant wife. In Viswasam, he protects his daughter. Ajith-Siva should consider saving the audience from bad movies by taking a very long break from each other." Dailyhunthttps://www.sbnation.com/users/feezeerkeen

How Imran is struggling to play Chinese chequers

Beijing insists these camps are a part of its strategy to counter violent extremism, culled from similar programs in the West as well as Muslim nations. The Chinese approach reportedly involves 'five keys', 'four prongs', 'three contingents', 'two hands' and 'one rule'. The 'five keys'-ideological, cultural, customary, religious and legal-aim at a long-term solution to terrorism. The 'four prongs' are a combination of four methods: 'squeezing by correct faith'; 'counteracting by culture'; 'controlling by law'; and 'popularising science'. The 'three contingents' aim to reinforce three main groups of people the government believes can maintain stability and security. The 'two hands' refer to one that cracks down firmly on terrorists, and another that educates the Uighurs. The 'one rule' of course means ruling Xinjiang according to the law. Though China has been widely criticised for the way in which it treats Uighurs, Imran has been forced to keep mum. But even his plans to focus on Chinese investment and aid to Pakistan appear to be heading for a showdown, with his government cancelling a major power project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, and urging Beijing to delete it from the list. While these two different situations do not imply a rift in Sino-Pak ties, they do indicate that all is not as well as both sides claim. 70-year-old watchman killed in bull attack in Hapur: Police

"Local residents took Totaram to a nearby hospital but he was pronounced brought dead. Later in the day, some villagers and his family members made a demand for ex-gratia compensation. The district administration assured them that their demands will be taken into consideration and they will be provided suitable financial aid from the chief minister's fund," added Kumar. Despite efforts, problem far from solved Despite Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's January 10 deadline for relocation of stray cattle to shelter homes, district officials are yet to complete the process. The Basti district administration has started a helpline for people to report stray cattle, said a PTI report. Even policemen as well as government officials have been seen personally taking care of stray cows. In Siddharthnagar, police have even marked stray cattle with radium collars to alert night-time drivers. Village head Meghraj Singh said, "There are more than 60-70 bulls in the village.Last April, one Vikas kumar (19) was attacked by a bull. He fractured his spine and died two days after the incident. In past year, more than a dozen villagers have been injured in similar attacks." Dailyhunthttp://www.trakyadans.com/UserProfile/tabid/57/userId/82551/Default.aspx

What Uttar Pradesh could portend for the BJP

But it is also true that parties have tasted electoral success in spite of a poor or moderate performance in UP. In 2004, the Congress had won nine seats there, but went on to lead the United Progressive Alliance at the Centre. Five years later, of the Congress's total kitty of 206 seats, UP had contributed a meagre 21. This goes to show that the Congress's performances in other parts of India played a significant role in fuelling its race for the throne. The BJP, on the contrary, has a disproportionate dependence on UP when it comes to forming the government in Delhi. This could be because the BJP has traditionally been projected as a force to reckon with in the 'heartland'. The southern part of India continues to defy the BJP's electoral juggernaut. Its success in the Northeast is also of recent vintage. Contrastingly, the Congress has managed to win the mandate even after losing UP, usually comprehensively. Does that mean that the Congress, a diminished political entity compared to the behemoth that it was after Independence, retains its appeal among a wider cross-section than its principal rival in this diverse polity? This is not to suggest that the outcome in UP would be completely incidental to the larger picture that is likely to unfold after the general elections. A strong showing by the Opposition in a state that the BJP had swept in 2014 and, again, three years later, this time in assembly polls, could be a potent symbol of the extent of the BJP's rejection in its own backyard. This would undoubtedly come as a shot in the arm for the BJP's opponents. Phulpur, Gorakhpur and Kairana have shown that the Opposition may not be building castles in the air. Being Baba: Why I love wearing my baby

Ladies, I'm not saying this is true about you. Mothers are built differently and you probably don't feel this way because you've felt the baby grow inside you for nine months. However, I can pretty much guarantee that most men who are having their first child are NOT prepared for what they see when the baby is just born. It takes time. I mean sure, our sense of responsibility kicks in but we don't yet feel the bond immediately. The first few days are a massive change and just dealing with the numerous challenges that a new baby brings takes up everything. One way of feeling close to your baby is to simply hold them close to you. It may seem simple, but it is absolutely magical. Mothers obviously to do this most of the time because the baby is feeding constantly. For dads, however, it's a bit tricky finding this me-time with the newborn. Well, here's something that really worked for me - babywearing! Some of you may have heard about this term thanks to Piers Morgan who shamed Daniel Craig for it but let me tell you a bit more about babywearing and why Bond knows best. A definition I read some place said, "Babywearing is the act of carrying a baby close to you (on your body) in a carrier or piece of cloth. Baby carriers are designed to make carrying baby easy, comfortable and ergonomic. They support babies of all ages just like how you would in your arms." And by the way, there are many different carriers available in the market to suit babies from the newborn stage right through to toddlerhood. We got our first carrier around the time Neil was about five weeks old and we've not looked back ever since! So, now you know the definition but how does it really help? Here are some of the benefits of babywearing that we personally experienced. -Babywearing mimics life in the womb, thereby helping your little one adjust to the outside world faster. For Neil, this meant instantly calming down and relaxing, irrespective of whether Neha was carrying him or me. -Newborns feed better when worn, which helps increase the mother's milk supply. -When a baby is worn in an upright position, it can help soothe colic. And we experienced that in a big way. Neil used to cry incessantly at times and would be quite gassy and putting him in our carrier would calm him instantly. -You get to have your hands free essentially because the carrier does all the heavy lifting for you. Hence doing things, especially parenting, if you have more than one child, becomes a lot easier. But in my case, it was just being able to do simple stuff, like eating or reading a book, while making him sleep. -Babywearing helps in easy and discreet breastfeeding in public. This is especially useful when you're travelling out of home, going to the mall or just going to meet friends or relatives. -Carried babies cry less, sleep better and develop faster. I have no doubt about this. Neil could be wailing up a storm but the moment he's in his carrier, it's lights out. And when we step outside and are walking on the road my curious little monkey gets to see everywhere and it is just a joy to watch his head turn right and left as he devours every little thing his eyes can see. -Babywearing helps parents, grandparents, and other caregivers bond with the baby better. This is most important for fathers since they not only get to bond with the baby but also get to give their partner some much deserved and needed rest and recuperation time. Every time I've had Neil with me in the carrier, it has felt amazing. I love wearing him and walking around. He goes off to sleep in five minutes and then stays on me for as long as two hours at a time till he wakes up for a feed. Those few hours of holding him close to my chest and feeling his little heart beat next to mine are truly special. And of course, the fact that I get to pepper his head with a thousand kisses just makes it perfect! New growth is spread evenly all around on Hyderabad outskirts

Other areas on the city's outskirts have also seen much activity. Realtors say the factors contributing to this rapid development are a stable government, shift of industries to the northern part of the city, the Pharma City in the southern part, Metro Rail and development of the IT sector in the eastern parts. HMDA's town planning department had issued 1,100 building permissions in financial year 2017-18 which has gone up to 2,524 permissions in the six months from June 2018. An official in the department said that the planning department alone generated Rs 526.35 crore in six months, when it had collected just Rs 299.45 crore in all of the previous financial year. Besides building permission, the HMDA has issued 18 no-objection certificates for setting up petrol bunks, with four still being processed. HMDA's Development Permission Management System has approved 458 draft layouts, 18 draft layouts for constructing gated communities, one for setting up clubhouse, 53 occupancy certificates, 101 building permissions for setting up industries through TS-iPass and 62 layouts in six months. The official quoted above claimed that since there were no open lands in the GHMC area, citizens and builders were buying land in HMDA's jurisdiction since land here is cheaper than in the core city. He said most of the approved layouts were surrounding nearby towns or headquarters of newly formed districts. These towns will be developed into satellite townships which will eventually have shopping malls, multiplexes, open spaces, a transport system, and provide employment opportunities. Most of the layout and building permissions have been given around Ghatkesar, Bhongir, Medchal, Uppal, Nizampet, Bachupally, Adibatla and Shamshabad. Mr Gummi Ram Reddy, president of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India (Credai), Telangana, said there has been a 20 per cent growth in the real estate sector in the city since the formation of Telangana state. He said that a stable government, affordability of land, 24/7 electricity and an expanding IT sector and the announcement of the Pharma City havenot only attracted investors from other metro cities in the country, but also from across the globe. 'The TS-iPass has given a major boost to setting up industries which also attracted several industrialists to invest in the city. The real estate sector has already seen a growth of 25 per cent during the current financial year. The rise has been seen in both residential and commercial sectors,' Mr Ram Reddy added. Mr C. Sekhar Reddy, former national president of Credai, said land value has seen a steady growth since 2017. On an average, land value has increased by Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 per sq. yard for residential areas and Rs 4,000 to Rs 6,000 in commercial areas, and in extraordinary cases it has also touched Rs 8,000 in the western part of the city where the IT sector has been rapidly expanding. Mr Sekhar Reddy said that the land value at Mokila near Shankarpally had nearly doubled while the remaining area on the outskirts had seen 15 per cent to 20 per cent increase in land value. He said that investors are getting 80 per cent returns on their investments, which has been good for the development of the city. ... NCLAT dismisses Edelweiss pleas challenging Synergy resolution plan

"In absence of any merit, we dismiss these appeals," the two-member NCLAT bench, headed by chairperson Justice SJ Mukhpadhaya, said in the order. Rejecting Edelweiss's objections to the merger proposal in the resolution plan, the bench observed, "The arguments of the appellant (Edelweiss) that merger and amalgamation of the companies cannot be proposed in the resolution plan or such proposal is violative of clause (e) of sub-section (2) of Section (30) is fit to be rejected". Edelweiss' counsel had argued that the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) did not contemplate/permit/provide for effecting amalgamation before implementation of the resolution plan especially in case such amalgamation has an effect of extinguishment of the corporate debtor itself. The two-member NCLAT bench, in its order, said that once a plan is approved, one may argue that in terms of the provision of the Companies Act, a formal order of amalgamation was required, but no such argument can be advanced at the time of the approval of the resolution plan which merely proposes merger. It also found no problem with the debt-assigning matter by SCL to MFL. Dailyhunthttp://www.equestrianbookfair.com/UserProfile/tabid/57/userId/1839/Default.aspx

Meghalaya miners' families request for retrieving decomposed body

Government officials have said that it would be extremely difficult to retrieve the body intact since it was in a decomposed state. A senior government official said that the rescue operation is still underway because of a Supreme Court order. "We want the body," said Manik Ali, whose 20-year-old brother Monirul Islam is among the 15 miners who were trapped in the rat-hole mine. "Even if they manage to get a finger or a bone out of the shaft, it is fine for us. We will at least be able to bury the dead with some respect," said Ali. Ali, representing the families of three trapped miners from Assam's Chirang district, and Aminul Uddin from Hojai district were called by the district administration and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Thursday to see a video footage showing the body. "They showed us the video. The body is swollen. The face cannot be seen so we cannot make out who it is," said Aminul Uddin, who worked at the same coal mine with his elder brother Kuti Miya. Aminul Uddin was lucky as he went home on December 7 to vote in Assam's panchayat elections. "On the evening of December 13, I got to know that my brother is trapped," he said. On December 13, water from nearby Lytein river flooded a network of tunnels in the mine, trapping the 15 men. A multi-agency operation, which include de-watering of the main shaft where the miners are trapped and in the nearby mines, have failed to yield any result so far, as the water level did not reduce even after pumping out over 3 crore litres of water, officials had said. The district administration and rescuers have told the families that the body could disintegrate if it is pulled out and that it would be difficult to retrieve it. "It does not matter. We are Muslims. According to Quran we have to bury the dead. I can recognise if its my brother even if I get to see the ring on his finger," said Ali. "I have lived with my brother all my life. I will be able to recognise him," said Aminul. Both of them said they have conveyed the message to the district administration. "The deputy commissioner is talking to the next of kin and trying to convince them that it is very difficult to retrieve the body," said Peter Ingty, Additional Chief Secretary, who is overseeing the rescue operation. He said it is because of the Supreme Court order that the operation has not been called off. "It is only because of the Supreme Court order that we are hanging on. Submissions will be made before the court and let's see what happens," Ingty said. The apex court is hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking steps to rescue the 15 miners. My uniqueness was non-negotiable: Sushmita Sen

What Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul's comments say about Indian cricket Words to that effect. It was still in the 'cool' territory. Despite taking no part in India's historic win over Australia, he had stayed in news. On Johar's show, Koffee With Karan, as the talk-show host baited them with questions about women - the ones they had dated, had sex with, their favourite pick-up line - the 25-year-old Pandya and his teammate K L Rahul, 26, boasted about hooking up with multiple women and also how open they had been about it with their parents and family. But what was perhaps more damaging was the rapid-fire segment on the show. Here, as Johar asks the two if they had "done it" in a teammate's room, both Pandya and Rahul respond with a resounding "yes". From there on, the answers keep lifting the iron curtain between the fans and their cricketing heroes, and Johar keeps pressing. He asks if they have "gone above and beyond to 'connect' with a fan after the match", and, with Johar pushing him, Rahul replies: "Oh, that way? Yeah, I have." He also goes on to talk about how he once partied till 5 am on the eve of an international game. It was especially this part of the show that didn't go down well with the team and the cricket administrators. For, it hinted at a disturbing team culture and also exposed the frailty of the wall around the players that anti-corruption officials keep talking about. Was it so easy for outsiders to sneak into the team hotel? Aren't there curfew hours before a big game? What he didn't read In 2017, the BCCI issued a players' handbook titled '100 things every professional cricketer must know' which was based on Justice R M Lodha's recommendations. It covered a wide range of topics from fitness and diet, to media interactions and managing finances. Page 77 of the book titled '10 things about media interaction' has a picture, ironically, of K L Rahul (see below), with a caption that says: "Before the interaction is to begin, one could think through a few difficult or 'trick' questions that could be asked and the answers one would like to give to them." It also warns players about the motives of the interviewer: "You need to understand that a journalist could have a motive - to sensationalise or build a story that would be of commercial benefit to their organisation... You could simply say 'That's not something I want to talk about' or 'I have no comment to make about that'." A blurb on the page has an M S Dhoni quote: "You have every right to ask me that. It's your prerogative. But I have the right to not answer." In the days following the telecast of the show on January 6, things would dramatically spin out of control for the two players. Pandya was hoping to be part of the ODI series, but was in danger of being banned from the side. Sources talk about how he would wear a haunted look and do his best to find out how many matches, if any, he would have to miss. The gravity of the episode had hit him. An Indian cricket board official, who has been interacting with the two players, says a line from Pandya has stayed in his mind. "He told me, 'I beg you to allow me to continue playing for India, sir'," says the official. Back in India, Vinod Rai and Diana Edulji, members of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (COA), who have been on a warpath with each other, differed once again. Rai initially talked about banning both the cricketers for two matches, but later asked Edulji to take a decision. After taking a legal opinion, Edulji asked the players to return home. But there was the question of probing the two cricketers over what they said on the show, and here too, Edulji and Rai were on opposite sides. While Rai wanted BCCI CEO Rahul Johri to conduct the preliminary enquiry, Edulji pointed out the flaw in that call in the wake of the sexual allegations against the CEO. "It's bad optics and COA will be criticised for it. Regarding the CEO, he was cleared by you, not me," Edulji wrote to Rai. The legal opinion that Edulji took states that pending inquiry, the players can be suspended, and an ad-hoc ombudsman be appointed to handle the probe. With Rai and Edulji disagreeing on that appointment, as things stand, on Friday, the apex court postponed the hearing to next week. The limbo continues. "How can you expect them to be with the Indian team now? They will fly back home," Edulji had told this newspaper. While Rai, in his mail to Edulji and other board officials, described the players' "off-the-ground act" as "deplorable", he also spoke about the need to take "corrective action, sensitise them of their misdemeanour and then get them back on to the ground once they have suffered the consequences". He also said the point was not to bring their career "to a cul-de-sac by indefinitely delaying a decision". "BCCI is not in the business of ending young careers. Please be assured that the desire to conduct the inquiry is not a desire to 'cover up'," he wrote. -- Pandya and Rahul. Two players who were being talked about, until this controversy, as being among India's biggest finds - Pandya, a rare pace-bowling all-rounder that Indian cricket has been waiting for since the Kapil Dev era, and Rahul, a top-order batsman who, the team hopes, will adapt to all formats of the game. While Pandya, a Class 9 dropout, has a story of struggle, of a father who invested his all to get his two sons to play cricket, of days spent playing the game with just a meal of Maggi, Rahul's parents, both academics, insisted he secure a university degree before he chased his dream to play for India. While the latest controversy could put the brakes on their career, the path that led to Pandya and Rahul bragging about their sexual prowess has been traversed by others before. Before Facebook became popular, there was Orkut, the pages of which, though wiped clean now, used to hold sexist comments from a few Indian cricketers who are big today. They were teenagers then and would publicly chat with fellow cricketers about their sexual 'conquests'. In their defence, they were teenagers, they weren't making their views public on a TV chat show, and, at least in their minds, those were almost private conversations. Things have changed. In the post MeToo world, the patience has run out on such behaviour as the outrage against Pandya and Rahul shows. In his apology, Pandya talked about "being carried away with the nature of the show". On last season's Koffee With Karan, Johar had hosted actors Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, where one of the questions was about whether they have had sex with a friend's girlfriend. Ranbir said yes. The other question was whether they had "done it" on planes. Both said yes, to squeals of laughter. So Pandya isn't entirely off the mark when he talks about the "nature of the show". But had Pandya and Rahul thumbed through the BCCI-approved handbook for players, titled '100 Things Every Professional Cricketer Must Know', which offers suggestions on how to handle the media and conduct themselves, they probably would have been in a better place. A couple of years ago, after the CoA took over, the BCCI had commissioned this handbook that was said to be in line with Justice R M Lodha's recommendations. It has a foreword by former India captain Rahul Dravid. Page 77 of this handbook, under the Section '10 things about media interaction', reads: "A short while before the interaction is to begin, one could think through a few difficult or 'trick' questions that could be asked." The section also tells players to "Find out what kind of report/show the journalist intends to produce" and "Make a list of things to avoid talking about". The pages of his handbook are interspersed with photographs of the players and, coincidentally, this section comes with KL Rahul's picture. There are more words of wisdom on page 76 under the headline: "What are ways to avoid media-related controversies." Here players are also educated on the motives the interviewer may have. "You need to understand that a journalist could have a motive - to sensationalise or build a story that would be of commercial benefit to their organisation. You could simply say "That's not something I want to talk about" or "I have no comment to make about that." Then there is the question of access to cricketers. Those on cricket circuit say access is a lot easier for the general public when the team is touring. "In India, during international matches, we even have police on our hotel floors. It's not always easy for anyone to come into your room. But abroad, they usually just have one security officer and we players can easily tell them that we are getting a friend over." Here is where the Pandya-Rahul case gets complicated. For a young cricketer walking into the side, the stardom, glamour and big bucks that are part of the Indian cricketing ecosystem are hardly sobering. Back in the 70s, and even further back, such talk was considered at best, locker-room conversation, and at worst, "having a good life". A Sri Lankan cricketer of an earlier era once recounted to this correspondent sex tales from the past about big players from all around the world. "Women would queue up to have sex with him.", he would say about a particular cricketer, and "he would skip training sessions to have an orgy in the room" about another. Shane Warne's revelations about his infamous threesome with two models and an inflatable sex doll, and Ian Botham's broken beds have sustained the cricketing world's gossip industry for years. The Indian Premier League (IPL), when it launched 2008, served to further bedazzle young minds for being a constant party with some cricket thrown on the side. The money too was unlike anything the players had known before. "It was all out there for free. I would say things have changed in recent few years but definitely in the earlier years, the party scene in IPL was much talked about by us players," says an Indian cricketer. "You are a young player and you see all these famous cricketers from all over the world do stuff - you do feel that it's all normal and part of being cool." While his teammates, privately and even publically, talk about his "cool-dude image", and how he goes to great lengths to sustain that, people who know him, like his childhood coach Jitendra Singh have always stressed the other, softer side of him - how he offered financial help when the coach's mother was ill or how he gifted a car as gurudakshina. Meanwhile, Hardik's father has said his son has neither stepped out of the home since his return from Australia nor has he been taking calls. -- It's learnt that the team management wasn't initially sure whether the players should be sent back home. They were fine with suspending them for a few games and moving on - putting the controversy behind and focusing on preparing for the World Cup. But as the row snowballed into something bigger, there was no way but to act. Sunil Gavaskar was among those who wanted the two players to be kept out of the team. "They have got to be kept away. Otherwise, what's the point of the suspension? If they are going to enjoy the perks of being with the team," he said. "It was so crass. When the controversy first erupted, I was surprised, wondering what (Pandya) could have said that caused such a huge drama. Then I saw the show. It was so disappointing and crass. It's shocking that he thought he could share all that to the world," says a member of the current India contingent. Harbhajan Singh too had lashed out after the controversy, saying, "I will not travel with these two guys in the bus if my daughter or my wife are travelling in the team bus. How would they feel? You are looking at women in only one angle and that is not right." The players have, however, found support from former captain Sourav Ganguly, who said that though he hasn't seen the show, he was of the opinion that they should be forgiven. "People make mistakes. Let's not go too far here. I am sure they will come out as better persons. We are human beings and we will not always be perfect. We should move on and make sure it doesn't happen again," he said. After the controversy erupted, one of the board officials, Anirudh Chaudhry, wrote about how the players needed to be counselled on women being used as "honey traps" for nefarious match-fixers. For now, the very advertising industry that makes the players millionaires by branding and marketing their "coolness", has cracked the whip. Gillette India has already pulled out of a deal with Pandya. They also launched a #thebestmancanbe campaign with the promotional line that went, "Boys will be boys? Isn't it time we stopped excusing bad behaviour? Re-think and take action by joining us." The Khar Gymkhana club in Mumbai too revoked the three-year membership they had given to Pandya last October, citing "adverse comments" from their members, in particular the women who wanted the club to "take action and be proactive". What remains to be seen is what the future holds for the two players. They might soon come back to the team but will Pandya and Rahul be forever known as the guys who talked tripe about women? Or will they be forgiven with time?
