Raj Kapoor's 94th birth anniversary: Lonely childhood to being a not-so-regular dad
On his 94th birth anniversary, we walk down memory lane to give you a sneak-peek into his childhood, his acting career and his relationship with his children. 1. With father Prithviraj Kapoor frequently leaving behind his family to travel for work, Raj Kapoor, the eldest among all children, was lonely and very protective about his mother, who was only 16 years older to him. 2. Raj was obsessed with food, something that goes back to his childhood when he wanted to take part in races only to get the snacks at the end. 3. The actor finally had his way after a dramatic showdown with his father, who wanted him to lead a conventional life away from showbiz. 4. As a boy, Raj did not have much of an interest in academics. Instead, he loved to read comics like Archies and Little Lulu. "He told our children mythological stories," actor Randhir Kapoor had told India Today Magazine in an interview. "Or he would read aloud from Archie comics," Rishi Kapoor had added. 5. At the age of 10, Raj Kapoor appeared in a film titled Inquilab for the first time. At the age of 24, he became the youngest film director of his times by making the film Aag, starring himself and Nargis in lead roles. 6. As a father, Raj Kapoor wanted his children to discover their own identity. "He [Raj] is my guru. When I reached the set to film Main shayar to nahi, there was no choreographer to help me with the shoot. I asked sahab (Raj Kapoor) about it and he said there was no need for one. I got very upset and nervous about it as it was my first time shooting a song. But he was certain about it as he didn't want me to copy someone else.he wanted me to have my own signature style," Rishi Kapoor had revealed while speaking at the 16th Pune International Film Festival's PIFF Forum. 7. For Raj, cinema wasn't just his profession; it was his life. On holidays, he would visit his farm near Pune or his Swiss resort to be at the races. But it's not like he wasn't around for his children when needed. 8. In an interview with Filmfare, Raj's daughter Rima Jain had revealed, "Papa was not a regular dad, who'd be available at all times. But he was aware of everything that we did. Basically, Papa, for us, meant 'entertainment'. Movies, vacations, parties, new outfits. He loved throwing lavish parties." 9. Despite being known to the world as a showman, he enjoyed simple things and enjoyed sleeping on a mattress on the floor, even if it meant dragging it off the bed at a hotel. He also preferred to be driven in the Ambassador car, while the Mercedes was reserved for his wife. 10. Raj Kapoor was honoured with Padma Bhushan in 1971, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1987. It is important to make the Union government litigation efficient
Why should two government departments or two PSUs fight it out in courts? You may have come across similar figures earlier. 60-65% of civil cases involve the government as a litigant, sometimes on both sides. 95% of government appeals fail and so on. These earlier figures were often based on a sample survey done in Karnataka High Court in the early 1990s. Since then, there have been other surveys, such as by Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy. We now have something akin to a census, not a sample survey. This is the Ministry of Law and Justice's Legal Information Management and Briefing System (LIMBS). This is for the Union government and, indeed, state governments to replicate the idea. The purpose of LIMBS isn't academic research. It is a tool to ensure Union government litigation is handled better. As of today, 364,601 court cases are covered (315,154 of these are live). These straddle 2,415 courts and 64 ministries. I said LIMBS is akin to a census, not a sample survey. That means, all Union government cases and all ministries/departments should be a part of it. Since it is still work in progress, I don't think it has yet become a census, but incrementally, it is getting there. More cases, more courts and more ministries/departments are becoming part of LIMBS. One can process and analyse the database to figure out how Union government litigation can be handled better. The 46% figure I mentioned earlier is from LIMBS. Since this is work in progress, as the database expands, numbers may change. Subject to that, which ministries account for most cases? In decreasing order of importance, we have railway, home affairs, communications, health and family welfare and finance. These account for more than 70% of cases. Most cases are in tribunals, followed by high courts. Among high courts, most cases are filed in Delhi, UP, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and West Bengal High Courts. An average case takes eight years and 41,605 cases have been pending for more than ten years. Another 72,805 cases have been pending for between five and ten years. This is a general bane of dispute resolution and grievance redressal. Without getting into broader judicial and legal issues, which are indeed important, is it possible for Union government to handle litigation better? What are these cases, stuck for many years? The answer partly depends on the ministry and level of the court. For instance, we hear finance ministry and we assume it's about taxes, with financial implications. That's largely true, especially on indirect taxes, but not entirely. For instance, out of around 46,000 finance ministry cases, around 41,000 are on indirect taxes. But 9,500 have no financial implication and around 700 are on service matters. I want to flag service matters, with railways ministry as an example. The railway ministry's success (in winning a case) is 90% in Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), but drops to 74% in High Courts and 48% in the Supreme Court. To make it explicit, the railway ministry loses a case in CAT. But decides to appeal. Even when it loses in the High Court, it decides to appeal to the Supreme Court. This explains why the success rate declines. I have simplified. However, this highlights unnecessary appeals, not just on service matters. (On appeals, there is a link with the criminal misconduct definition in Prevention of Corruption Act.) More broadly, on all civil cases, not just Union government ones, the moment issues are framed, one more or less (in 90% of cases) knows the eventual outcome, within a band, not precisely. Litigation merely prolongs the journey towards a certain outcome. I hope LIMBS eventually leads to a template all Union ministries/departments can follow. These are the issues that have given rise to the dispute. From earlier judicial decisions, we already know what happens in such cases. Therefore, don't litigate. If you have lost the case, given the issues, don't appeal further, and so on. Why India's airlines keep struggling to take off
Almost every Indian airline is struggling. Consider Jet Airways Ltd., the oldest private airline in India. It's suffered losses for three consecutive quarters now; its cumulative current liabilities have climbed to $2.2 billion. The airline is struggling to pay its pilots and has reportedly failed to make payments to the owners of its leased aircraft. It's even been difficult for it to pay its airport fees. Another airline, SpiceJet Ltd., has been in the red for two quarters and is also delaying its payments to the Airports Authority of India. And even the market leader, the much admired IndiGo, declared a quarterly loss recently for the first time since going public in 2015. It is easy, perhaps, to blame the fragility of this sector on variables beyond airlines' control. When the price of fuel goes up, Indian airlines make losses; when the rupee depreciates, Indian airlines make losses. And, of course, aviation worldwide is famously crisis-prone. But there's something special, surely, about Indian aviation, which seems to be in a nosedive even as demand is growing faster than anywhere else. The truth is that the sector has also been weakened thanks to a combination of errors by both the private sector and, crucially, the government. Companies have lobbied as if their lives depended on it; governments have intervened as if their reelections depended on it. The consequence is that, for decades now, market forces have been stifled in the sector. Even Jet Airways has profited in the past off government action. The airline, which is 24 per cent owned by Abu Dhabi-based Etihad PJSC, benefited hugely from a controversial decision by the Indian government to multiply the number of seats permitted between Indian airports and the giant Gulf hubs of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. This gentle treatment was notably different than that handed out to Jet's biggest domestic rival for a decade, Vijay Mallya's Kingfisher Airlines, which was denied the right to stop and refuel its long-haul flights in the Gulf - something that would have sharply reduced its fuel bills and perhaps kept it flying longer. (Kingfisher collapsed in 2012, and Mallya is now in exile in London, where he is fighting extradition requests from an Indian government that accuses him of absconding with money from state-controlled banks.) Government intervention is also stifling the future of the sector. Connecting smaller Indian towns and making short-haul flights profitable is central to Indian aviation's hopes for the future. Yet Prime Minister Narendra Modi has insisted on a populist and uneconomic $35 price cap for such flights. Few airlines have been interested - and those that were discovered that metropolitan airports would prefer to give their scarce landing slots to bigger and more remunerative jets. Unsurprisingly, the new scheme to connect smaller airports seems to have crashed before it took off, with airline licenses being cancelled left and right. And then, of course, there's the elephant in the sky: the state-owned Air India, which lumbers along adding to its losses. Every year, the overstaffed and inefficient airline puts taxpayers deeper in debt. Worse is its malign influence on the sector as a whole. After all, it's tough for any private airline to raise fares when one of its competitors seems to have no real budget constraint and can keep fares at whatever seems politically acceptable. Jet is looking for investors now. Etihad - which is bleeding cash itself - might have to step up. Nobody else looks really interested, and definitely not unless they win a controlling stake; nobody was interested in buying Air India either when the government put it up for sale earlier this year. The Tata Group, which already runs one airline - Vistara - has reportedly been interested in both, but that's because the group has had an obsession with airlines ever since Tata Airlines was nationalized in the 1950s and turned into Air India. Unless you are a little obsessed or have already invested in the sector, who's going to want to run an airline in India? The troubles of its aviation business are a microcosm of how the Indian economy works. From the outside, everything should be going its way - strong demand, smart companies, sound fundamentals. But a combination of private sector overconfidence and government intervention means that it's just too difficult to make sustained profits here. Dailyhunthttps://www.plurk.com/eggyrotens
Senate rebukes Trump, Saudi Arabia over Khashoggi, Yemen war
ne measure recommended that the US end its assistance to Saudi Arabia for the war in Yemen. The other put the blame for the death of Khashoggi squarely on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Both had been vigorously opposed by the Trump administration and threatened with a presidential veto. Top brass was on Capitol Hill ahead of voting to prevent further action in the House."The current relationship with Saudi Arabia is not working," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who opposed the Yemen resolution but called the crown prince "so toxic, so tainted, so flawed" after the Khashoggi's killing that "you're never going to have a relationship with the United States Senate unless things change."The bipartisan votes came two months after the Saudi journalist's slaying at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and after Trump persistently equivocated over who was responsible. U.S. intelligence officials concluded that bin Salman must have at least known of the plot, but Trump has repeatedly praised the kingdom.Senators made clear where they put the blame. The resolution, passed by unanimous agreement, says the Senate believes the crown prince is "responsible for the murder" and calls for the Saudi Arabian government to "ensure appropriate accountability."Senators voted 56-41 to recommend that the US stop supporting the war in Yemen, a direct affront to the administration's war powers abilities.Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who co-sponsored the Yemen resolution with Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah, called passage a "historic moment."Lee said Khashoggi's death focused attention "on the fact that we have been led into this civil war in Yemen half a world away" and "we've done so following the lead" of Saudi Arabia."What the Khashoggi event did was to demonstrate, hey, maybe this isn't a regime that we should just be following that eagerly into battle," Lee said.As Senate approval loomed, the administration dispatched Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defence Secretary Jim Mattis to the House to make the case against the resolutions and warn of damage they could do to the US-Saudi relationship. A congressional aide and an administration official said their appearance was aimed at stopping any House action on the resolutions.Pompeo and Mattis had made a similar entreaty to the Senate late last month. But it was roundly panned by senators angered by the secretaries' refusal to accept a CIA determination that assessed the crown prince had ordered Khashoggi's murder.CIA Director Gina Haspel briefed House leaders Wednesday on the Khashoggi slaying. The journalist, who had lived in the US and wrote for The Washington Post, had been critical of the Saudi regime. He was killed in what US officials have described as an elaborate plot as he visited the consulate for marriage paperwork.Saudi prosecutors have said a 15-man team sent to Istanbul killed Khashoggi and then dismembered his body, which has not been found. Those findings came after Saudi authorities spent weeks denying Khashoggi had been killed in the consulate.Trump has been reluctant to condemn the crown prince. He said the United States "intends to remain a steadfast partner" of the country, touted Saudi arms deals worth billions of dollars to the U.S. and thanked the Saudis for plunging oil prices. But Graham and Sen. Bob Menendez, the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, have rejected Trump's economic arguments. They are setting the stage for legislation next year that goes further in halting arms sales and taking other measures.Menendez says economic concerns do not overpower human rights and the US must send a "global message that killing with impunity" will not be tolerated.Frustration with the crown prince and the White House prompted several Republicans to support the Yemen resolution. Seven Republicans and all Democrats voted for it. Some already had concerns about the war, which human rights groups say is wreaking havoc on the country and subjecting civilians, many of them children, to a deadly disease and indiscriminate bombing. The resolution condemning Saudi Arabia for Khashoggi's slaying was from Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Both Republicans opposed the Yemen resolution and voted against it.McConnell said senators have grave concerns about Khashoggi's killing, but "we also want to preserve a 70-year partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia, and we want to ensure it continues to serve American interests and stabilizes a dangerous and critical region."But McConnell encouraged passage of the Khashoggi resolution and said it provided "a clear and unambiguous message about how we feel about what happened to this journalist."The Senate debate came as the United Nations secretary-general on Thursday announced that Yemen's warring sides have agreed to a province-wide cease-fire and withdrawal of troops in Hodeida, a contested Red Sea port city. The agreement came during peace talks in Sweden. The brutal four-year-old civil war pits the internationally recognized Yemeni government, supported by a Saudi-led coalition, against the Iran-backed rebels known as Houthis. 1677061 Dailyhunthttps://www.ted.com/profiles/11453525

Thiruvananthapuram: Repeat hartals earn public ire
'We live on daily wages and this is the second one in the same week. I am scared to wear khaki fearing violence from party workers,' said Mr Selvam, who arrived at Thampanoor hoping to get a couple of rides to save his day. Many people who arrived at Thampanoor bus terminal got stuck all the day as KSRTC kept its services off the road. An elderly couple, who came from Bangalore, said they came to know about the hartal only after reaching the station at 6.30 am. 'We are from Palode, Nedumangad,' they said. 'There is no bus service till evening. We have no other way but to stay here.' Even Ayyappa devotees were not spared on the hartal day. Hari Singh, a young Ayyappa devotee from Kattakkada, had a harrowing time waiting for the day to end so that the hartal will be over. 'I reached at the bus station in the morning. There is no public transport,' he said. ... Dailyhunthttps://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/V03Y4494026Im0ubG
Chicken-egg sized diamond found in Canada's frozen north
Yellow stones typically sell at a discount to Type IIa top whites often found in the best African mines. Still, the highest quality fancy vivid yellow or fancy intense yellow stones can sell for a premium. 'We can label it fancy yellow, but beyond that, due to its rough nature and the abrasions received through the processing facility, that's all we can comment on,' Durgin said in an interview. 'It's very hard to give a ballpark estimate. It all depends on, again, the cutting and the resulting stone it ends up.' The discovery is the seventh-biggest this century, according to Bloomberg calculations, and would be among the 30 largest stones ever unearthed. The biggest was the 3,106-carat Cullinan, found near Pretoria in South Africa in 1905. It was cut into several polished gems, the two largest of which -- the Great Star of Africa and the Lesser Star of Africa -- are set in the Crown Jewels of Britain. There have been a slew of big finds in recent years as better technology helped miners first detect, and then not break big stones that are susceptible to being smashed in the mining process. Among those are diamonds found by Lucara Diamond Corp. and Gem Diamonds Ltd. that fetched between $40 million and $63 million. While the Diavik mine is 60 percent owned and fully operated by Rio, Dominion bought the stone in an internal auction process from its partner. Dominion said it will select someone soon to cut and polish the stone. 'It's a beautiful gem-quality diamond,' Durgin said, adding that it was somewhat of a 'miracle' that the stone survived the mining process. 'It's very unusual for a diamond of this size in this part of the world. So it's a very unique discovery.' In 2015, Rio unearthed a 187.7 carat gem-quality diamond from Diavik. 'Foxfire' narrowly escaped being pulverized because its elongated shape allowed it to slip sideways through a filtering screen. The diamond was exhibited at the Smithsonian before being turned into a pair of pale yellow earrings weighing a total of 77.7 carats. The earrings sold for over $1.5 million at Christie's earlier this month. This year's find comes at a good time for Dominion. Since billionaire Dennis Washington bought the company for $1.2 billion last year, there's been a management merry-go-round with at least five senior personnel leaving. That includes CEO Patrick Evans, who left last week after just over a year at the helm. Dominion needs to decide if it will pull the trigger on expansion projects that would extend the life of the Ekati mine. Diamond mining in this area of Canada's sub-arctic is incredibly difficult. There are no permanent roads, meaning the only access is by air or, for a few months a year, ice roads that have to be rebuilt each winter. Meanwhile, the global market has been under pressure, especially for smaller and lower quality stones. There's currently an oversupply of such diamonds, and a weaker Indian rupee has put pressure on manufacturers in the country where about 90 percent of gems are cut and polished. Major cutting centers have also been squeezed by low margins and a drop in trade finance. Dailyhunthttp://www.cruzroja.es/creforumvolint_en/user/profile/27042.page

BMC councillors press for new conservancy firm
This had left the lanes unclean and created unhealthy environment for those living near them. After several requests, it was decided to appointment a separate sanitation agency for the job," said a councillor. He, however, said that the contractor was selected after a rigorous bidding process in March, but the condition of the lanes has not changed. "We have written to the mayor seeking his intervention in the matter. A new contractor should be hired," he said.Conservancy lanes are the space between rows of houses, which can be found almost everywhere in the city especially where the government quarters are located. The lanes are meant for smooth passage of various utility vehicles such as fire engines and ambulance. However, the lanes have turned into dumping yard for the nearby houses. "The civic body has failed to put up enough number of waste bins in our area forcing us to dump the garbage in the lanes. We don't want to do it, but in absence of proper cleanliness service, we are forced to dump the garbage in the lanes," said Dipti Jena a resident of Unit II.Jena said that most of the conservancy lanes are located in wards where the sanitation was being maintained by private agencies. "I have received complaints from the councillors. A performance review of the contractor will be done and if the councillor feel the contract of the agency will be terminated with immediate effect," said Jena.Unit VIII resident Amar Hota said that initially sanitation workers had visited their area to clean the lanes. But they discontinued the service too soon and the lanes are back to their dirty best. "The civic authorities are not doing an honest job when it comes to keeping the city clean," said Hota. Bargari Morcha ends today, protesters told to prepare for next phase
Get ready for the next phase. This morcha which remained peaceful for the past six and a half months will end on Monday after honouring all those who worked day and night for this morcha." he said, adding, "Our struggle will continue." The announcement was made after Congress Ministers Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Tripat Rajinder Bajwa declared from stage that the government had accepted all demands of the Morcha. Attacking the Badals, Mand, "As culprits (of desecration incidents) were not punished by the Badal government, I had to start this Morcha and we have achieved a lot in this six months' struggle and will achieve more...I will not let even one Sikh prisoner remain in jails. We (Jathedars of Sarbat Khalsa) will be going to Harmander Sahib at Amritsar on Tuesday to pay obeisance to the Guru and will announce the next programme afterwards. "There must be many doubts in the minds of people. But I want to clear them all.sada sarkar nal koi sauda nahi hoyea, sarkar sade kol aayi hai, tusi sarakaran jhukaiyan han.. partian jhukian han (we have made no deal with the government, rather the government came to us. You all made the government bow, made the political parties bow)." Apart from Cabinet Ministers Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Tripat Rajinder Bajwa, other Congressmen present included Congress MLAs Harminder Singh Gill, Kulvir Singh Zira, Khushaldeep Singh Dhillon. Attacking the Badals, Randhawa said: "Former CM Parkash Singh Badal often says that panth is in danger. However, I believe Badal's family is in danger. This is the reason that he is busy doing foregiveness prayers at Golden Temple. He is culprit of the whole public and to seek forgiveness, he should have come here in Bargari to seek apology from all...It is time to get gurudwaras freed from them (the Badals)." He added,"We have accepted all demands of the Insaaf Morcha, no doubt we took some time..It is our duty to implement them all. Badals are the sinners of panth. If we will not implement them all, we will be bigger sinners." The minister elaborated,"We have arrested 23 culprits behind desecration of Guru Granth Sahib and theft of Guru Granth Sahib from village Burj Jawahar Singh Wala. This was demand number one. Earlier, unidentified people were booked for Behbal Kalan firing, but after Justice Ranjit Commission's report, four policemen were booked by name. Thwey have got stay from High court and their next date of hearing is on Monday. Four lawyers - including two suggested by the Morcha are fighting this case. This was demand number two. The last demand is of release of Sikh prisoners. One Dilbagh Singh lodged in Nabha jail will be released. Orders were passed on December 5. Another shifted to Amritsar jail from Karnataka. Punjab CM has written to Karnatka government for his early release. Harnek Singh Bhapp - a Sikh prisoner is in Rajasthan, they have refused to shift him to a Punjab jail, Punjab government has written again to them on this issue. So we have accepted all demands and they are being implemented." Tripat Rajinder Bajwa echoed Randhawa and said,"We will moot this in Vidhan Sabha that Bargari village should now be named as 'Bargari Sahib'. This village has a historical background and two Sikh Gurus had come in this village." While Mand gave his decision at the last to end Morcha, speakers before him indicated that they had given all rights to Mand and will accept his final word. Baljeet Singh Daduwal, parallel Jathedar, Bhai Mohkam Singh from United Akali Dal, Simranjeet Singh Mann , president SAD(A) were a few who supported Mand and even appreciated the government for accepting their demands. Calling for action against Badals, Daduwal said: "Badals got desecration of Guru Granth Sahib done and they did not arrest the culprits to grab votes. They need to be arrested now. Badal is the real culprit of Sikh panth." SAD (Amritsar) president Simranjeet Singh Mann also blamed Badals. Mand said, "Many people are talking that Morcha was set up to make money. I want to tell you all a total of Rs 1.48 crores was collected as donations, out of which Rs 1.26 crore has been spent as Morcha's expenditure. The remaining Rs 22 lakh, I have given to the panth. They can do whatever they want to with this." Dailyhunthttps://justpaste.it/3tkb1

Caught on the bounce
The position we're in, we would have taken at the start of the day; especially winning the toss and batting. I think Nathan Lyon will enjoy bowling with the amount of bounce on this track. No doubt he will be excited to bowl here."Virat Kohli and India too were "excited" a day before by how similar the pitch and the outfield looked. With an injury taking R Ashwin and Rohit Sharma out of the equation, talks had centered around how India could end up fielding four speedsters, a la Johannesburg. But the exclusion of Bhuvneshwar Kumar to accommodate Umesh Yadav in the said quartet was more a la Centurion. Perhaps Ravindra Jadeja's exclusion - Hanuma Vihari was the like-for-like replacement for Rohit - as well. But there are four days left, and these sidelinings are yet to translate into tangible opportunity costs. India, though, did feel the heat - literally and figuratively - of operating sans a frontline spinner and being faced with a batting line-up who seemed intent on rectifying errors they'd committed in Adelaide . Finch replaced his booming drives with abstinence. Marcus Harris too hunkered down. That resilience and the heat - 35 and above - perhaps threw off the pacers' bearings. Ishant Sharma wasn't at full steam. For the first time over the last two years, India's vaunted pace battery had gone wicketless for the first 20 overs. All said, dreary wasn't how the entire day turned out to be for India. Jasprit Bumrah spewed venom after his first spell. A Finch lbw, 18 plays and misses, and 16 edges after his 6-over opening spell are solid numbers, says Cricviz. Travis Head and Shaun Marsh looked like they'd just picked up from where they'd left off in Adelaide, but unwarranted shots on a bipolar wicket let India breathe again. Vihari's part-time off-breaks yielded two dismissals, even if one of them was from a half-tracker that the Optus strip transformed into a ripsnorter. Flashes of brilliance emerged from fielders behind. Those are perhaps enough silver linings for India to draw inspiration from and tilt the scales back in their favour. Even Vihari felt the same after the end of day's play."Our only plan was to be disciplined. I think we did very well in that aspect. In all three sessions, we bounced back really well. They had so many plays and misses. It happens in the game. Overall we put in a good effort," he remarked. "The first hour tomorrow will be very crucial. If we get them out for below 320, we will be right back in the contest. As batsmen, we will try to be as disciplined as possible, just like we did in the second innings of the last Test match. If we bat well, we have a good chance." Saina Nehwal marries Parupalli Kashyap, calls it 'Best match of my life'
We played tournaments together, trained together and slowly, started paying more attention to each other's matches. In the competitive world that we live in, it is difficult to get close to someone. But somehow we both found it very easy to talk to each other, talk about our matches. The feeling gradually grew,' Saina had said in an interview. 'We didn't think about marriage before. The career that we pursue is very demanding. It is very important to win tournaments and we didn't want to shift our focus by getting married earlier,' she said. Saina has been one of the best in the women's circuit and is currently playing in the Korea Open. She has won 20 major titles, an Olympic bronze and a silver at the World Championships. Kashyap too has been a force to reckon with, having reached the highs of a World No. 6 ranking before injuries hindered his rise in the men's circuit. Congress continues to pay for Akbaruddin Owaisi's arrest in 2013
The implementation of 4 per cent reservations by Rajasekhar Reddy helped the minorities a lot. However, the MIM MLA's arrest was humiliating for the party and its leadership developed a grudge against the then Congress Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy. Interestingly, the MIM which had been against the creation of a separate Telangana and had proposed 'Rayala Telangana' before the Sri Krishna Committee, began moving closer to the TRS and eventually began supporting it outright. In the last municipal elections, Mr Akbaruddin Owaisi citied his arrest and this helped the TRS in winning the chairman posts where the Muslim population was strong. This election, minorities played a vital role in deciding the TRS candidates' victory in many constituencies. On November 19, 2018, MIM party president Asaduddin Owaisi recalled at a party election campaign in Nirmal in support of TRS candidate Allola Indrakaran Reddy that they have not forgotten the humility they faced at the hands of Congress (referring to Akbaruddin Owaisi's arrest ). Nirmal is the same constituency from where his brother Akbaruddin Owaisi made the alleged remarks against Hindu Gods in December, 2012. Mr Asaduddin Owaisi began his counter-campaign against the Congress from Nirmal town. He alleged that local Congress candidate had offered Rs 25 lakh to his party leader to stop him from attending the meeting in Nirmal and also announced that he had an audio recording of the 'conversation'. Just before the Congress public meeting in Medchal that was attended by the Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, the audio conversation went viral. MIM leaders openly supported the TRS candidates contesting from constituencies where the Muslim population is considerable. Local MIM leaders worked in 'understanding' with the TRS candidates and this was visible in Adilabad, Nirmal and Mudhole and Karimnagar. ... Dailyhunthttps://www.theverge.com/users/eddymorgaan

EC must realise no aberration will go unnoticed
This was unprecedented. Even more so were the missing names from the voter list of Telangana: 22 lakh, no fewer. That could account for the entire electorate of a less populous country. In Telangana, it translated into 8 per cent of the electorate. A percentage that can decide an election. An apology seems too inadequate a response for such an abject failure. Even if allegations of a deliberate pattern are discounted, the oversight cannot be. Surprising that political parties too missed locating the gap. The Election Commission must keep in mind that no aberration goes unnoticed in the age of social media. The spectacle of EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) and VVPATs (Voter Verifiable Paper Trails) surfacing in unexpected places, or unknown people lurking around strongrooms, was another embarrassment. It's good that the poll panel has decided on rigorous training for polling personnel before the Lok Sabha polls. The EC would also do well to not keep the date of polling and counting so far apart. Even when ballot papers had to be carried to the Northeast, the counting was closer to polling. It's important that the Election Commission is not found wanting in its duties or seen to be compromised: nothing can be more sacrosanct for the survival of democracy than the exercise of franchise. In rebuke to Trump, US Senate blames Saudi prince for Khashoggi's murder
The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and spawned what the United Nations calls the world's most dire human crisis, with the country on the brink of famine. It was the first time either chamber of Congress had backed a resolution to withdraw US forces from a military engagement under the War Powers Act. That law, passed in 1973, limits the president's ability to commit US forces to potential hostilities without congressional approval. Seven of Trump's fellow Republicans joined Senate Democrats to back the measure. Immediately after the Yemen vote, the Senate backed a resolution blaming Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for Khashoggi's murder and insisting that Saudi Arabia hold accountable anyone responsible for his death. Khashoggi, a US resident who was a columnist for the Washington Post, was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October. The Senate vote, which was unanimous, puts pressure on House leaders to allow a vote on the Khashoggi resolution this month, before Congress adjourns for the year. 'Unanimously, the United States Senate has said that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is responsible for the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. That is a strong statement. I think it speaks to the values that we hold dear,' said Republican Senator Bob Corker, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee and sponsor of the resolution. Trump has said he wants Washington to stand by the Saudi government and the prince, despite a CIA assessment it was likely he ordered Khashoggi's killing. He promised to veto the war powers resolution. Opponents of the resolution are reluctant to take any action to disrupt the strategic US relationship with Saudi Arabia, seen as an essential counterweight in the Middle East to Iran, arch-enemy of close US ally Israel. Administration officials also see Saudi support as a linchpin for an Israeli-Palestinian peace plan yet to be unveiled by the Trump administration. And they have argued that ending US support could complicate Yemen peace talks. 'Shared Strategic Interests' Asked to comment on the Khashoggi resolution, a White House spokesperson noted sanctions imposed on 17 Saudis over the killing and said, 'Our shared strategic interests with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia remain, and we continue to view as achievable the twin imperatives of protecting America and holding accountable those responsible for the killing.' But backers of the resolutions, including some Republicans, promised to press ahead. On Wednesday, a bipartisan group of senators promised to push in the new Congress legislation for humanitarian sanctions and a ban on weapons sales to Saudi Arabia. 'What's next is to do everything possible to demand that the House of Representatives do what the members of the House want done, an opportunity to vote on this,' Senator Bernie Sanders told Reuters. Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, said he would bring the resolution up again after the new Congress convenes in January, when Democrats will control the House of Representatives. The measure could pass the Senate again, given the bipartisan support it received on Thursday, even though Trump's Republicans will have a larger majority in the upper chamber next year. 'I think we're going to win in the Senate and I think we are going to do what the American people want, that is to end our participation in this horrific and destructive war,' Sanders said. There was no immediate word from House leadership on whether they would allow a vote on either resolution. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis, who briefed House members on Thursday, urged senators during a briefing last month to keep supporting the Saudi-led coalition. Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said her members supported congressional action. 'There certainly is an appetite in our caucus for that,' Pelosi, who is expected to be the next House Speaker, told reporters. Yemen's warring parties agreed on Thursday to cease fighting for the Houthi-held port city of Hodeidah and withdraw their troops, the first significant breakthrough for UN-led peace efforts in five years of conflict. ... Toofan Phethai to get harsh on coastal Andhra Pradesh
The travel path of Phethai is currently in a north-west direction from its origin and states of AP, TS and Tamil Nadu fall in its belt. The untimely rainfall of diverse intensity is expected to lash both the Telugu states from December 15 to December 17. On Friday, the depression was travelling at a speed of 18 kmph and was moving north-westwards. Since weather conditions are favouring it, the depression will mature into a storm on Saturday evening and turn severe by Sunday, December 16. The landfall is expected on Monday early evening covering Ongole to Kakinada. 'After its landfall, Phethai will turn north-eastward due to the upper-level strong easterly winds. Tripura to clear unauthorised religious structures on govt land
All district magistrates will have to file affidavits of progress," he added.Das said the demolishing of unauthorised religious structures has no connection with any recent incident in the state and they were just following the Supreme Court order.Sonamura sub-divisional magistrate Saju Waheed said they have already removed 15 to 16 such structures and served notices to the rest. "We have divided the unauthorised religious structures into two categories - structures which were built over 30 years ago and those which are less than 30 years old. A total of 184 such structures were recognised in Sonamura subdivision in Sipahijala district," he said, adding that notices were issued to 48 religious bodies, including 20 temples, 26 mosques and two churches.Opposition CPM MLA Shayamal Chakraborty condemned the move and said eviction notices were issued to 12 mosques in the area but no such notice was served to the temples. "The authority served eviction notices only to the mosques and informed the temples only verbally about the relocation," he said.BJP spokesperson Ashok Sinha supported the move and said the government has shown true nature of secular governance in Tripura since unauthorised structures of all religions are being relocated.Additional secretary for revenue L.T. Darlong said, "We are simply complying with the Supreme Court order. The order came in 2009. We are implementing it now. The issue is still sub judice in Tripura High Court. The state government will file an affidavit in the high court on December 19 on the unauthorised religious structures." Dailyhunthttps://www.123formbuilder.com/form-4395623/my-form
Mekedatu dam only to save water for Tamil Nadu, says HD Kumaraswamy
'We are all brothers and sisters', he said, adding he was ready to meet his TN counterpart Edappadi K Palaniswamy and request him not to oppose Mekedatu project. 'I make this request to everyone in Tamil Nadu and I am asking like a brother,' he said, adding that Karnataka had started working on Detailed Project Report (DPR) only after obtaining relevant permissions from concerned departments at the Centre. Kumaraswamy's argument will not go well with the TN government and political parties here since the issue of sharing Cauvery water has already been settled finally by the Supreme Court in its final order and there is nothing more for the two states to negotiate. However, the Karnataka CM has been arguing, even after the Apex Court order, that the two states must find an amicable settlement on sharing Cauvery waters. Reiterating his stand at his media interaction now at the airport here, he said if Mekedatu reservoir is constructed, 'Karnataka will use it only to store the water and not utilise it'. He also pointed out that whenever the monsoon was good, Karnataka always released water to TN and this year too, his state has released more than 390 tmcft, 'which is much more than the (SC) verdict'. But then, huge amount was water was going wasted into the sea; whereas if Mekedatu reservoir came up, Karnataka would be able to save water and release it to Tamil Nadu in gradual quantities. 'Why waste water?' he asked. Kumaraswamy said he had requested the Union Water Resources Ministry to convene a meeting of the leaders of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in order to negotiate a lasting solution to all the water issues. 'I want to stress again and again that we are not enemies; so let us sit across and find solutions'. When a reporter pointed out that Tamil Nadu was facing drought, Kumaraswamy shot back: 'Even Karnataka is facing the same problem and we have lost crops worth `20,000 crore just this year'. ... More than formalising informal jobs, we need to create productive ones
All these categories of workers can be found with all types of employers, whether working for households, family firms, formal registered large enterprises or government agencies. Going forward, the tech-fuelled changing nature of work forces us to recall the past, which used to have a stable lifetime job with health and retirement benefits. Most jobs in large firms and even government jobs no longer have a defined pension and health benefits are diverted through insurance schemes. With limited employment security, soon there will be little to distinguish such formal work from informal employment with social protection. Instead of being fixated on the dichotomy between informality and formality, it is time to think of the quality of work as a matrix where one axis reflects various forms of social protection and the other indicates types of employment — from uncertain daily labour to permanent employment.Once social protection is delinked from work, it is possible for a daily wage construction worker to have access to retirement benefits and health insurance, as is already possible, but not widespread, in India. The other imperative is to enable workers to leverage skills acquired without formal certification. For this, recognition of prior learning is key and our existing initiatives need to be improved and scaled up significantly. Beyond social protection and skill recognition, the challenge of improving productivity and raising earnings remains. This needs support to smaller firms, not through subsidies but by access to reliable infrastructure, affordable and accessible finance and linkages to global value chains. Much is made of technology and the rise of the platform economy and its flexible work arrangements. A worker who earned a fixed and low wage can, in principle, now earn more as part of the platform — at times, by self-exploiting himself or herself by working longer hours. It is not as if flexibility is absent from traditional work arrangements. Even today, manufacturing is outsourced to home-based workers, often women, allowing them to balance socially constructed domestic responsibilities with income generation activities, bringing a few more women into a workforce from which they are conspicuously absent. A key difference is that the platform enables a direct link to the consumer, enabling workers to retain more of the surplus. But more than flexibility, a major benefit of platform arrangements is the increase in visibility of the worker. This is also true for contract workers employed through formal suppliers. In addition to better tax compliance, it can be leveraged to connect workers to social security frameworks. Workers like contract manufacturing workers, drivers, delivery persons, carpenters, domestic workers and beauticians are all ordinarily invisible to the social protection system. But once on a platform, they become visible and potential beneficiaries of a universal social protection system, with benefits that continue even if they change jobs or migrate. This breaks the conflation of informal employment with lack of social protection. Concomitantly, while platform arrangements can be used to skirt tax and labour regulations, it also brings together disconnected, self-employed workers. Despite their uncertain legal status as employees, they can organise to make demands. Some nascent research suggests the emergence of new forms of organising and bargaining in the platform economy. These forms use digital technologies and social media to organise, and find creative ways to subvert the power asymmetries between 'employers' and workers, leading to new forms of collective bargaining. The Indian labour market was already much too heterogeneous to fit into simple dualism frameworks.Technology and migration only make it more complex. Our challenge is not about formalising the informal, but rather the production of more just jobs — work that is productive and remunerative. It is removing barriers to productivity, ensuring wages rise in tandem, enabling a voice for workers and expanding a portable social protection framework that is delinked from employment. Only then can we confidently navigate the transition to the future of work. Sabina Dewan is president and executive director, JustJobs Network, and senior visiting fellow, Centre for Policy Research. Bisi Bengaluru: Misu makes it memorable
So when Misu first opened at St Marks Road… after Open Box was burst open to the curiously seeking foodie, and then Housefull gave vegetarians some modern masala in Bolly garb, it was time for Amit to open a new and very rustic copper toned Misu. The new Misu in Indiranagar (yes again) is away from the hullabaloo of 12th main and 100 Feet Road, in a quiet locale, almost hidden in a corner with a delicate hued interiors, and it is already seeing a steady trickle of customers. With the able Brand chef Dinesh Sharma helming it, in a boutique restaurant avatar in what used to be a home, with that same large and burgeoning menu, similar to its parent avatar… with a few additions on the grills and ramen side. And the place is a vision of colour, subtle and classy. We started the meal with the most delicious edamame wasabi dimsum which was soft, parcelled beautifully, dipped into robust sauces - a chilli, herb and onion chilli one. Delicious, and it was dreamily walloped by the vegetarian on the table, and the others as well. We also had the spicy tofu avocado maki, freshly made, fluffy rice deliciously dunked into the soya and wasabi, crunchy and light. The Som Tum Salad that Chef Dinesh spiced up for us was fresh and tangy with crisp strings of raw papaya. More roasted groundnuts, please. We then decided to soup it with a hot and sour vegetarian soup which was thick, perfect in flavour and spice… would have loved more crunchy veggies in it. The tom yum gung was hot, beautifully flavoured with succulent pink prawns, in a lemon grass and galangal stock, Delicious, though we are more punch-seekers. The sweet could be toned down a bit. We also ordered a chicken satay cooked just right, had a caramel glaze to it with a peanut sauce. Juicy and succulent. The sautéed edamame with chilli and garlic sprinkles was wow. Delicious. As we nibbled along, happily, we also tucked into a Sambal tofu which was soft on the inside and crackling on the outside. With a hit of red ground marinade. We also loved the jalong chicken, a soupy dumpling… to which we added spice, of course. The Veg and Non Veg Ramen made their way onto our table… and the thick delicious stock and soupy noodles with prawn were akin to soup for the soul and wholesome, and a vegetable ramen with loads of vegetables, mushroom, broccoli and more was awesome. The Ramen could be hotter, and steaming for the wintery nip. We would have loved to have the ice cream sandwich but were stuffed. The menu is the original Misu one, with some additions thanks to the many festivals the team has done, and sussed out favourites. 'We opened last week, and from Saturday we will start lunch and dinner too. This was a home that we have taken six months to refurbish. What excited me was that it was not on a busy stretch, was quiet… close to 12th main but away from the hustle. The dreamy copper hued pillars add to the ambience,' explains Amit whose forays to Thailand and Europe satiate his love for food and ideas. Misu's different interiors, copper-hued grills that imbue warmth, and easy tables and chairs are unique. Amit hopes to make Misu into a lounge post-11, after the dinner crowd wans. 'We have added more grills to the menu. I also wanted to transform the place after the dinner crowd is over into a lounge bar for a nice languorous drink. Though first, Misu is about the food, so that will always be our priority,' he adds. The 75 seater with a little outdoor area of 12 covers, ambient music, a warm glow is a delicate pinkish orange glow is wonderful. Very metal meet muse sorts. We'd prefer it to be meal-oriented than party hub… and are not sure how it will not creep into each other's space… though Amit assured us of Misu's sanctity as a Pan Asian go-to. Chef Dinesh's dimsums and sushi are already very popular. Misu plans to open at least one more in the city and travel to other metros and the serial entrepreneur is already onto his next venture, that of a unique Indian restaurant where Red Fork used to be - a fine dine Modern Indian classic comfort cuisine presented with a wand of modernity. For now though, Mi-su (me so) full with the delicious, delicately flavoured yums… it's only apt to come back for a more serious exploration of the wonderful menu. Bird flu: Govt orders culling of chicken in 4 villages in Puri district
he collector said he has issued orders to stop supply of eggs for mid-day meals in schools and anganwadi centres. At least eight teams have been formed to undertake the culling operation. An outbreak of bird flu is suspected in Puri after 20,000 hens and crows died in the Krushnaprasad block of the district. The blood samples of the birds were sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal. The samples tested positive for the H5N1 virus, chief district veterinary officer (CDVO) Dr Girija Patnaik said. The administration is dealing with the matter seriously, as the affected areas are close to the Chilika lake, where a large number of migratory birds are likely to congregate in winter. A joint team of forest and veterinary officials had gone to Nalabana in the lake and collected stool samples of about 150 migratory birds. So far, the team has sent 308 samples to the ADRI, officials said, adding that the Chilika Wildlife Division had convened a meeting on this issue at Balugan on Wednesday in the presence of senior veterinary and forest officials. Who is Urjit Patel
Prior to that, Patel was a Deputy Governor since January 2013. He was given a three-year tenure till September 4, 2019. Patel, whose experience includes a mix of stints with multilateral institutions, bureaucracy, central bank, global consultancies and even private companies, has previously served the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the US, India, Bahamas and Myanmar. Within two months of his appointment, Patel faced the first challenge with Modi's demonetisation decision, and then the tax revamp with the GST coming into play. In a mail he wrote to RBI employees on New Year's eve, Patel, referring to demonetisation, wrote, "Let me emphasise that one thing we should all zealously guard is the integrity and reputation of our organization and any act belittling the same should deserve zero tolerance.." This appears to have been the beginning of the souring of relations between Patel and the government. In June 2017, when the Finance Ministry sought to make a presentation to the monetary policy committee (MPC) ahead of its meeting on June 6-7, Patel asserted the central bank's independence. On June 8, he told the media that the MPC had declined the ministry's request. RBI-Govt standoff At the heart of the RBI-government standoff was a proposal by the Finance Ministry seeking to transfer a surplus of Rs 3.6 lakh crore, more than a third of the total Rs 9.59 lakh crore reserves of the central bank, to the government. After a rather public resentment of government interference in the RBI functioning, deputy Governor Viral Acharya had stressed the importance of the RBI's autonomy. The differences led to the government invoking, for the first time, a provision in the RBI Act-Section 7 to start the formal process of consultation with the RBI Governor on issues such as easing the prompt corrective action (PCA) framework for PSU banks, boosting liquidity and credit to medium and small enterprises and Non Banking Finance Companies (NBFCs), and transferring additional surplus from the RBI to the government. Injury in Seoul made me more focused, says Greg Louganis
xcerptsOn what went through his mind after the head injury in SeoulMy inspirations were Ryan White and my coach (Ron O'Brien) who have been very supportive. When I hit my head on the springboard there was so much going on. I was diagnosed as HIV positive, my coach's mother was in coma and he didn't know whether to stay or go home. Both of us were rather distracted and I was the favourite but in split second after hitting the board I suddenly became the underdog. That made me more focused and I tried to do my absolute best. The thing I'll always remember about Ryan is his courage and sense of humour... The way Ryan lived his life continues to give me the strength to do things I might not otherwise feel comfortable doing. On his decision to continue after Los AngelesI wanted to quit after 1984 Olympics. I was 24. But there was this issue of post-retirement plans for divers. I was their representative. I went to the association who told me that since I was retiring I would not be in a position to speak on other divers' behalf. I told them I am continuing. Then in two years I won the World Championships in 10m platform. My coach said Seoul is in two years and I have to continue. That's the story. On the reasons behind his unparalleled success I rarely looked at the scoreboard. If I looked to see if my rivals had missed a dive, chances were there of me missing a dive too. I wanted my goals set higher. I didn't want to limit myself. Also my coach gave me goals, which I strived hard to achieve. In life you should always have goals. On living with HIV and being fit at 58It's all about making healthy choices. I think HIV has helped motivate me mentally and physically. I look at working out and doing something physically active every day as being as important as taking my medicines. On whether the dancer in him helped in divingI was a dancer before. It was a big part of my training. It all has a rhythm - gymnastics, dancing or diving. I was a performer. It helped me a lot. Also gymnastics was my first love. I always wanted to represent US in gymnastics. But it didn't happen and I switched to diving. Realistically speaking I think I am a bit tall to be a gymnast. On his idolEdwin Moses. I will always hold him in high esteem for the all good work he did for US athletes. In fact I carried forward his idea to have a retirement package for athletes who quit after the college level. On winning silver in the 1976 Montreal Games I wanted to win gold as a 16-year-old. And I thought I let everybody down by getting the silver. Now I realise it was a matter of pride to win a medal in my first Olympics. Dailyhunthttps://my.desktopnexus.com/greekfranchise/

Lessons from Rahul Gandhi's humility
Mr Gandhi was certainly alluding to the chorus that has emanated, time and again, from the top echelons of the BJP whose leaders - the prime minister is among them - have thundered that they would rid India of its oldest political party. Mr Gandhi's wisdom, magnanimity and grace are refreshing: some would even suggest that Narendra Modi and his colleagues would do well to cultivate these fine qualities. Indeed, one of the reasons that Mr Gandhi cited in his assessment of the downfall of the BJP in this round of elections is Mr Modi's refusal to "listen to the heartbeat of the country". Mr Gandhi's reasoning cannot be dismissed easily. The overwhelming mandate that the people of India delivered to Mr Modi and his party in the last general elections seems to have been interpreted by the powers that be - or should that read 'duopoly?' - in the BJP as a licence to impose an authoritarian, centralized political culture on an essentially diverse, pluralistic political economy. Some of Mr Modi's decisions, such as the one to enforce demonetization, have been justifiably criticized as being domineering in nature. Polarizing political programmes have caused further unrest among minorities. Could it be that Mr Modi's imperiousness made him impervious to the sufferings on the ground, compelling him to miss, as Mr Gandhi suggests, the pulse of the nation? The people seem to have retaliated in the only way they could - through their vote. The BJP and its pradhan sevak must learn to be more accommodating in their approach before their stern electoral test in 2019. But are not strongmen and humility akin to chalk and cheese? MNF shies away from BJP-tainted Neda
Everybody (invitees) will be addressed as chief minister or minister of so and so state, not in the name of the parties or Neda," Zoramthanga, 74, who has returned to the Assembly after two successive defeats, said.Zoramthanga will be sworn in as the chief minister for the third term at Raj Bhavan in Aizawl on Saturday.Among the invitees are AGP's Atul Bora and Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, National People's Party's James Sangma and United Democratic Party's Donkupar Roy, all Neda constituents, and Neda convener Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is also a senior cabinet minister in Assam.Neda is a platform of non-Congress parties constituted by the BJP just after the swearing-in of its government in Assam on May 24, 2016 with the objective of making the Northeast Congress-mukt. This they succeeded in doing, after MNF, a Neda constituent, unseated the Congress's last Northeast bastion in Mizoram in the polls held on November 28. The MNF won 26 of the 40 seats against five by the Congress. The BJP opened its account in the state, which has a 97 per cent Christians population, by winning one of the 39 seats it contested. The BJP's vote share, however, went up from 2,139 in 2013 to 50,744 this time, that is from 0.4 per cent to eight per cent. Why is Neda not so attractive now?Zoramthanga said it was because of the BJP. "The BJP is looked upon as anti-Christian in Mizoram. The Church is very powerful. We lost quite a lot of votes because of the accusation that the MNF has a very good connection with the BJP. That is the greatest salvo they (Opposition) fire at us."The MNF did not fight the recently concluded polls in alliance with the BJP.The MNF's efforts to distance itself from the BJP was also underlined in Zoramthanga's response to whether Buddha Dhan Chakma, the BJP MLA, would be included in his council of ministers. "No, no, no. They (BJP) will not be a part (of the government) because my party has 26 of the 40 seats and the BJP has only one. Nobody will be included (from outside) in my ministry," he said.Another reason not to induct the BJP candidate could be the fiat by NGO Coordination Committee, an influential forum of civil society groups and communities, not to field Chakma candidates in the Assembly polls. Including Chakma in the new ministry after securing a majority on its own could invite their wrath, a situation MNF would want to avoid. The majority Mizos consider minority communities such as Chakmas and Brus as outsiders. Cops, complainants face off on live Facebook video in Noida Sector 11 police outpost
He was with his brother Shariq Ahmad (37) and cousin Ayub (38) at the time. 'Around 6 am on Tuesday, we realised that our vehicle, a Fortuner, was missing from the parking area near our house and we lodged a complaint of theft soon after. The vehicle has a GPS tracker and around 9 pm, it showed that it had just crossed a toll plaza near Sirsa in Haryana,' said Shafiq. 'My two sons and nephew rushed to the sector 11 police post to share this crucial information with the police. However, the post in-charge was found drunk and he started misbehaving with them. My son started shooting an FB live video and this irked the cop even further. He arrested them and gave them a thrashing.' The four-minute long video purportedly showed the three engaged in a verbal duel with police outpost-incharge Sanjiv Balyan. In it, both groups claimed the other was in an inebriated state — while Shariq Ahmad is heard claiming that the cops misbehaved with him in drunken state, police outpost in-charge Sanjiv Balyan is heard accusing them of being drunk. Towards the end of the video, three policemen were seen arresting them and snatching away the phone. Balyan, however, denied the allegation of wrongdoing. 'When Arif came to me with the information, I asked him to immediately Whatsapp it to me as I was eating my dinner at the time. However, he started kicking the door of the police outpost and misbehaved with us. His two relatives and he were drunk and we charged them under Indian Penal Code section 151 (disruption of peace). They are still in jail,' said Balyan. Reacting to the incident, senior superintendent of police Ajay Pal Sharma,'the medico legal test of the accused have confirmed that they were in drunk state. They also misbehaved with the policemen on duty.' Reacting to the allegations, Shafiq said,'my sons do not drink due to religious reasons. When I met them today morning, they told me that the cops forced cotton dripped in alcohol to their lips in order to prove that they were drunk.' Ahmad is a B Tech graduate and MBA, who owns a 3D Printing shop in Noida. Dailyhunthttps://itsmyurls.com/juckzingchuk

How air pollution affects pregnant women and newborn babies
According to a study conducted by the National Institute of Health, which appears in the journal Fertility and Sterility, exposure to common air pollutants, such as ozone and fine particles, may increase the risk of early pregnancy loss. Multiple studies also indicate that air pollution contributes to lower fertility rates in men and women. During pregnancy, the growing uterus pushes the diaphragm up, making expecting mothers feel short of breath and thereby disturbing their sleeping patterns. The poor quality of air leads to an inflammation of the respiratory tract. Potential dangers of being exposed to air pollution during pregnancy During pregnancy, the increased consumption of dust pollutants and particles from the air itself causes chronic irritation of the respiratory tract, thus leading to inflammation and causing chronic cough, wheezing, congestion, eye and sinus irritation, asthma and chronic fatigue. Medication during pregnancy is restricted, to avoid complications. What can be done? The air quality index tells us the quality of air we live in. It is very important for us to be aware of the air quality levels in your city. According to the World Health Organization, 92 per cent of the world's population lives in poor air quality. Recently, it was shown that the air quality in the city of Mumbai had dropped down to very poor levels. In such weather, the smog created by particles settles down during early hours of the day. It is advisable to stay indoors at such time to avoid exposure to polluted air. Avoid Smoking If you or your partner is a smoker, then you may be at a real risk. If you are a smoker and continue to do so during pregnancy, the chance of complications including sudden bleeding and sudden foetal death are high. If your partner is a smoker, then you may land up inhaling the smoke passively. So all efforts must be taken to avoid passive smoking, particularly during pregnancy. Indoor pollution It is advisable to avoid crowded public places for long hours. Again at these places, there is a high chance of inhaling smoke, paint and dust. If there is any such activity happening around you, allow the fresh air to pass through the windows. Keeping the area around you dust-free and clean can reduce the particle count around you. It is advisable during pregnancy that air purifiers are installed in our houses and tree plantation is encouraged. The society needs to take the ownership of reducing pollution. Pregnancy is wellness and not an illness, and while many things can influence the health of you and your baby, air pollution is something that needs to be avoided for the healthy growth of the baby. Living Coral: Headliner colour of the year
Furniture, fashion, beauty, home, packaging, art and design, all don the happy hue. First among these was Butter London that has already come up with a Living Coral makeup collection that comprises nail lacquers-Patent Shine 10X Crème Finish, Peel-Off Glitters, and the Crushed Diamonds Patent Shine 10X. Later in January there will several other items joining the list. While the fashion industry rejoices this hero hue, the psychological impact of living coral cannot be negated. Since colour directly correlates with the release of certain hormones controlling our mood, it is important to understand its wellbeing quotient. In this regard, coral is an earthy tone that brings balance, roundedness and warmth. It evokes calmness. Close to nature, we see shades of living coral in autumn leaves, shrimps, oyster mushrooms, the poppy flower, twilight winter sky and in many more, making it a hue of sustenance at a time when human beings are deeply connected to the inanimate (read technology), and far removed from the animate (read nature). Today, there is a great need to reconnect to the latter more than ever. It's about taking cognizance of depleting natural resources and staying connected to nature responsibly. Living coral also strikes against the grave irony of the depleting coral reefs. So, while Pantone's colour of the year bears a fashionable stamp, it also forges an agenda for a sustained social action. Close to Nature Living coral is a happy colour that strikes against the grave irony of the depleting coral reefs. In 2016, about 30 per cent corals were wiped out in the heat wave that hit The Great Barrier Reef of Australia. In fact, a UN study suggests that coral reefs could be extinct in 30 years. India vs Australia: Virat Kohli & Co fight back but AUS stay ahead on Day 1
Skipper Tim Paine (16 not out) and Pat Cummins (11 not out) were unbeaten at stumps after enduring a testing spell from Jasprit Bumrah. Pacer Ishant Sharma (2/35) and spinner Hanuma Vihari (2/53) took two wickets apiece while Bumrah (1/41) and Umesh Yadav (1/68) accounted for one batsman each. Following a good start, Shaun Marsh (45) and Peter Handscomb (7) looked to extend their fourth-wicket partnership but could only manage to add three runs as Sharma broke through early in the final session. Handscomb looked to cut away too close to his body, and Virat Kohli held a stunning one-handed catch at second slip to dismiss him in the second over after tea. Marsh and Travis Head (58) then added 84 runs for the fifth wicket, and in doing so took Australia past 200 in the 69th over. India could have broken through early, but Rishabh Pant put down a regulation catch from Marsh (on 24) off Vihari in the 67th over. India were looking in bother again when Marsh fell against the run of play, trying to cut Vihari and edging to first slip where Ajinkya Rahane made no mistake. Head reached his third Test half-century off 70 balls but threw it all away as he square cut a wide delivery off Sharma six overs later and was caught at wide third man. Earlier, India struck thrice post lunch as Australia were reduced to 145-3 at tea. Jasprit Bumrah (1/41) and Umesh Yadav (1/68) struck during a tight spell in the second hour of play after lunch, as Australia lost three wickets for 22 runs. Post lunch, Marcus Harris had brought up his maiden Test half-century off 90 balls as he took his opening stand with Aaron Finch (50) to 112. Their 100-stand had come up in the 34th over, with India leaking another 48 runs in the hour's play after the break. Mohammed Shami (0-63) conceded 23 runs in his four-over second-spell after lunch. Also Rishabh Pant's chatter stings Virat Kohli at Perth Finch too reached his second Test half-century off 103 balls as Australia reached a position of strength. But things turned thereafter as Bumrah struck first up in the 36th over, trapping Finch lbw with a fuller delivery. KL Rahul dropped Harris (on 60) off Shami in the 45th over, with the fielder failing to time his jump at second slip. It didn't cost India too much though as four overs later, he hit a surprise bouncer from Vihari straight at Rahane at slip. In between, Yadav used the pressure built and etched out Usman Khawaja's (5) wicket, out caught behind in the 46th over as India gained the fruits of their hard work in this second hour of play. In the morning session, Australia defied a green-top wicket and made steady progress to reach 66-0 at lunch. The Perth wicket at the Optus Stadium was talked up a raging green-top wicket, but the Australian openers defied all that speculation. For their part, Indian pacers chipped in with all possible help and bowled a poor first spell with the new ball. Sharma started with a delivery down leg as the first Test ball to be bowled at this ground. It didn't change much for this first spell of four overs as he sprayed the ball all over. He seemed to be more concerned about not bowling any no balls, than maintaining an attacking line first up. At the other end, Bumrah was bowling short of length, even if he bowled quicker than Sharma. This new ball pairing proved expensive and wasteful as Yadav came on as first change in the ninth over. Shami was India's best bowler of the first session as he bowled with immaculate control from the very beginning. He came on to bowl in the 12th over and immediately troubled the batsmen. Finch survived an lbw shout on account of height as India wasted a DRS review. They had another loud shout turned down on the very next ball, but this time no review was taken. India bowled better in the second hour of play and conceded only 19 runs in 13 overs. But the damage had already been done as the duo were set and the new ball had been wasted on a fresh pitch. Agri loan waiver should not form part of poll promises: Rajan
"I have said forever, even written a letter to the Election Commissioner saying they should be taken off the table. I mean, certainly there is reason to think about farm distress. But, the question of whether the flows to farmers is best affected by waiving loans, after all, there is only a subset of farmers who get those loans. "So, it often goes to the best connected rather than those most poorly off. Second, it obviously creates enormous problems for the fiscal of the state once those waivers are done. And I think, unfortunately, it inhibits investment down the line," he said here while releasing a report titled 'An Economic Strategy for India'. Loan waivers, as the RBI has repeatedly argued, vitiate the credit culture, and stress the budgets of the waiving state or central government, he said. Rajan, who was RBI governor for three years till September 2016, is currently teaching at the Chicago Booth School of Business. "And I think our farmers deserve no less. We need to create the environment in which they can be a vibrant force and I would say more resources are definitely needed. Whether loan waivers are the best? I think it's highly questionable," he said. He expressed hope that an all-party agreement to this effect would be in the nation's interest. "It's no surprise to you that there is fair amount of agricultural distress which we have seen being highlighted by farmers, and also political parties are responding with variety of measures such as loan waivers," he said citing the report outlining the agenda for the next five years. On the current economic situation, Rajan said although India has had 7 per cent growth, it is not clearly creating enough jobs. Citing example of job shortage, he said 25 million people applied for 90,000 railway jobs. "250 per job and these are not priced jobs. These are actually low level jobs. So, it does suggest enormous demand for jobs," he said. Furthermore, he said, growth is not benefiting all sectors and all people, and inequality to some extent is increasingly. Besides, he expressed concern over subdued exports despite the fact that India has enormous quantities of cheap labour. Noting that there has been talk about improvement in inflation, he said, there is no improvement in the fiscal deficit of centre and states in the last 5 years. "So, in terms of public sectors borrowing, it's still as big as it was and that is source of concern especially as states budgets are going out of balance. We see trade deficit is large even after taking out the effect of borrowing," he said. Rajan, who is also part of the report, said that it looks at some of these challenges that the country faces. "We should ask the question that is this growth path viable and clearly more needs to be done on macro stability, on fiscal deficit, there are proposals in the paper that how we can do that, we absolutely need to enhance growth beyond 7 per cent, lot of back and forth on what the true growth numbers are, whatever they are, they are not enough," he said, apparently referring to the various GDP data brought by the government. The report, prepared by 13 economists from India and abroad, comes ahead of 2019 general elections. Besides Rajan, other who economists contributed to the report included Abhijit Banerjee, Pranjul Bhandari, Gita Gopinath, Amartya Lahiri, Prachi Mishra, Karthik Muralidharan, Rohini Pande, and E Somanathan. ... IGP: Bias against women gets entrenched at early age
She was of the opinion that to an extent, women themselves are responsible for the current scenario. Prescribing self help as the best help, she said that women need to take courageous decision and stand for what is right. From her own experience she said that women are always reminded about their gender at the workplace. 'From a family context, girls are always brought up to be social, careful and to behave well; which may not necessarily apply to boys,' she said. She further advised women to create role models and be mentors and an inspiration to others. Vanitha Datla, Vice Chairperson, Elico Ltd, said that despite India having a large educated population of women, the contribution of women to the country's GDP is less than 16%. Citing a recent study among women IIT graduates who passed out between 1990 and 2000, it was found that only less than 3 per cent of women surveyed where working. She said that India today has the largest educated population of women homemakers in the world. This, according to her, is due to the fact that women do not engage beyond their places of work and the slightest crisis in the family leads to them giving up their careers. Vanitha added that policies such as POSH Act against sexual harassment of women in workplace and the Maternity Bill took several years to formulate due to the lack of representation of women in policy making. This is where women need to unite and make their voices heard. She said that you cannot keep blaming the current setup as a bystander. It is time for women to come forward and be a part of the system. Sudhakar Pai, Chairman & Managing Director, Kurlon Enterprises Ltd. said that India has a rich culture of honouring women. However this has not transcended into the corporate world. According to him GDP should not be the sole measure of prosperity of a country. India needs a happiness index similar to Bhutan. Prosperity can only be achieved through inclusion and abandoning rigid principles of gender bias. Elaborating on the relevance of the conclave, Dr Githa Heggde, Chairwomen, CII IWN Karnataka said that the event was an effort to promote innovation through inclusion, be it diversity in gender, religion, age, language or people with disability. ...
